Okay Dawn, I have had some great days at the Farmer's market. SO I have been feeling bad that I haven't donated anything yet this year. Finally I just took some of the money I made and went and bought 25 pounds of onions and 25 pounds of garlic from one of my favorite vendors (at an unbeatable price) and took that to our local food bank. Which was so excited and grateful to have farm fresh food.
I did have several bouquets of sunflowers left (like 50 stems of blooms) and in honor of my mother I donated them to the Hospice house where she died. It wasn't easy going back there but I am so glad I did.
Thank you Dawn for inspiring and motivating me to share my (limited but exsistant) wealth.
Blessings, h

How beautiful and idea! I don't have a scale, but I will donate soon and somehow figure out the weight and let you know. Thank you!

Our group the Rogue River Chicks do lots of fund raisers to help the needy. Last Christmas we took in 2 huge boxes of food and $400 for the food bank. Now the summer is here, I have a huge garden and I take a lot to the Gospel Rescue Mission in Grants Pass to help feed the homeless. I also grow extra and give my vegetables away to many of the locals in my area. Good luck with your Food Drive. Joann |

Dawn, does taking fresh produce to elderly people at home count? If so I bagged up 7 bags of fresh veggies from my garden and took them to 7 elderly friends. They were at least 12 pounds each. I picked all I had in my gardens yesterday and didn't have enuf for the market so decided to do this instead.
I am very impressed with all you girls are doing in your neck of the woods. It's fun to see all the things ya'll are doing. Great job. And thanks, Dawn, for getting us all motivated to help others. I for one feel so very fortunate to be able to have gardens to share with others who can't garden anymore. I love to see their faces light up at the sight of all those fresh good wholesome veggies! That's all the thanks I need.

Kristin,
Yes, it counts in my book. To the one that posted about the 4H group, YES. It counts. What matters is that we are putting others first in the midst of times when we tend to first think of ourselves and our own. I am so proud of you girls. So Kristin, that's 84 more punds right?
1003 + 84 = 1087..... I'm super blown away.....

I called our local food bank to find out if they had a way to handle a large box of eco laundry soap rather than food. She said that wasn't a problem. Next I thought to ask what they NEEDED. She knew the answer immediately: Spaghetti Sauce. She said they just can't get enough spaghetti sauce. So, I went shopping for my favorite sauce and favorite brand: Eden Foods. Put us (MaryJanesFarm) down for 75 pounds of organic spaghetti sauce to be delivered tomorrow. (Several cases.)

Well, I was about to add in what Miss MaryJane donated plus Kristin, then I took about 6 heads of cabbage, and peas to town....so lemme get this new-fangled number adder-upper going here....
1087 + 75 + 6 + 27.5 (cabbge and peas...mmmmmmm!) ______________
1195.5
Btw: I was told that non food items are being collected during the month of August for Back To School. If you have a gently used back pack, why not fill 'er up with pencils, crayons, paper, scissors and a box of tissue and make a young kid super happy? Heck, make two kids happy... deals on school items are everywhere now. I bought 4 boxes of crayons for 33 cents apiece!

50 lbs of potatoes and a 20 lb case of pasta are going to St John's Church soup kitchen tomorrow. They serve free lunch on Thursdays to anyone who shows up. Lots of kids attend.

I've given several bags of fresh lettuce, onions and chard to a bunch of the workers at the Ford dealer in town where my husband works. Most are just starting families and are'nt earning a lot of money so they really appreciate what I bring them. I'd say I've delivered at least twenty five pounds of produce so far this season. I'm just glad that someone appreciates and can use all this good produce so it does'nt get wasted. I froze up 7 bags of bush beans last week. More to come this week. I love sharing what I've grown in the garden to others to enjoy.

Okay, we are up to 1384.5 lbs! Okay, even if we were to just make it to 2500 lbs I'd be tickled beet red! YAY US! <clap! clap!>

Dawn, put me down for 45 pounds today. I worked my tail off today harvesting and weeding at the co op garden and decided to give it all away instead of having to work just as hard to get it all put up in the freezer. I'm thankful to be able to help others with what I've been able to grow this year.

Does anyone have any idea how much a pick-up truck load of sweet corn would weigh? Over the weekend, my dd and I took a load of fresh corn over to the projects (public housing) in the city and gave it all away. You never saw anything like it! Kids were coming up to us and pulling off their shirts to use to carry the corn home. We ran out of bags, I really thought we had enough. Some were using trash bags, filling them up and coming back wanting more. I overheard one little guy say he was going to sit outside the farmer's market on Sunday morning and sell it for half of what the farmers were selling theirs for. Others were eating it raw. Lots of people asked when we were coming back. I had one lady tell me she could use melons, cucumbers and tomatoes if we had any extras. If I had to guess, I would say it was in the vicinity of 800 - 1000 lbs, but I'm not good with weighing large amounts of anything. Last year we had more than that go to waste because we couldn't pick it and freeze it fast enough. This feels so much better!

Sue that was fantastic! I would have loved to have seen the kids faces. I love it when things like that come unexpected. Makes you appreciate people so much more. You did good girl.
Dawn, you can call me "sista" any day. I'm glad you started this as it really is a good feeling to help others.
