Most of us think of charity during the holidays. I know for me its about the only time I remember to give to those who are less fortunate. However, those less fortunate aren't just down on their luck during Christmas. They go without in the spring and summer too. I keep thinking of all these kids that might have to go without lunch this summer when they get it fed to them at school. I also have on my mind, some near and dear single moms struggling because they just lost their jobs. So, I thought it'd be neat to do a...

FARMGIRL FOOD DRIVE

You have from now, until September 30 to donate food to your local food bank, shelter etc. It doesn't matter if its canned or fresh - although I bet some fresh veggies would be welcome (hint hint mavens!).

The challenge is to donate a 10,000 pounds nationwide.

For those of you overseas, we will keep track of those records as well. I want you to weigh the bags, boxes, whatever and send me the poundage amount via email or post them right here. I will keep track of the numbers and post them on the forum this fall. Who knows, there might even be a prize to who donates the most food....

So lets farmgirl up and feed some peeps! er, I mean, people!

We have a food drive at church. It's really cute someone made a (Christmas tree like) shelves and every Sunday some people will put different items on the shelves. When the tree is full all the kids take the food and bag it for the local food bank. I guess I will now weigh things first.
I know I have used it a few times when I was on my own with 2 growing sons. I remember getting a bag of potato's with $5.00 in it. That was such a great surprise.
Its nice that you are reminding us to share all year. Thanks for the post

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

They give commodities away every month here, I'm sure some extra produce would be appreciated to go with it. Oh, I believe that this also fits into the requirments for a badge.

I run and own a Trucking company I know buy local eat local but not everybody is there yet. So this past week we had 583 pounds of Greek pasta salad that the boxes were dented and the grocery store would not accept them but the food was still good. So when this happens I find the food bank in the area to come and get the food for distribution. Over the 10 years of owning this Company there have been many many pounds of food. But I love this challenge and will do my best to help out the cause..

Go Dawn! This is a great idea and challenge (what farmgirl doesn't like a little healthy competition).
When we finish selling at the Farmer's market whatever we have left over we take to the Senior Center and give it away to elder's responsible for making the meals there. They always love the fresh veggies compare to the non perishables that are usually donated.
Does that count as "food bank"?
Best,
h

Garsh.... (shuffling my feet and blushing)

Thanks!

Heide, yes, I donate fresh food all the time. Any little bit helps!

Diane: I remember one Christmas, mom was really sick, and I was taking care of her and raising my dd, and I got 3 boxes of stuff from "Santa". Ham, potatoes, canned goods, gifts, the works. And a gift certificate to a local grocery store... wonderful isn't it?

Since we no longer have a car payment, we donate $100 a month to the local food bank. We had gotten used to paying out the car payment, and this is less than the payment was so our wallet feels a little fatter but mostly we feel *richer* because we are able to help others!

I will jump in with both feet and start putting things by for our food drive. Once my plums are ripe, I'll bag up a bunch and take them to my local food banks too...some will accept home grown produce as well as store bought goods and I'll donate both. Dawn this is a super cool idea! You are a great Maven leader *hug*
Thank you for reminding us to share...we can get so caught up in our own lives that we don't remember to help those around us in need.

With my mom, we give monthly to the Nuns who live nearby, they are very poor and live with what people bring them. The spend their days praying for the ones in need. The village is so small there is no bank food.

Great idea! I am on the band wagon!! I just move so will need to find the local foodbank, and them I am off!
Last summer I did take fresh veggies from my garden to the food bank in my old town. They loved having it.

For tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, but keep me, guide me, love me, Lord just for today.

I have a plum tree and we never know what to do with all the plums. There is a local women's home that I know would LOVE them, so thank you for inspiring me to donate what I can of our plums to those ladies!! I'll try to weigh them before I donate them and I'll let you know the number :)

A local church in the next town (my town doesn't even have a zip code we have to share one) has a "dinner bell" every Monday, where 150 people have a free meal. When ever my hens have fill my fridge to the point that I can't fit anything else in there because their eggs are taking up all the room, I call them and donate the eggs. They say they make a cornbread pudding that takes 18 eggs. So they checked if the USDA and were told that they can take the 18 eggs, beat them up and freeze them in ziploc bags. I've heard from a couple that goes to the dinner every week that the pudding has been especially good lately! That couple are regular customers.
