I want to try and pick and cook fern fiddleheads that grow around our house in upstate New York, but I don't know if there are any ferns you should not try and eat. Does anyone know? I'm told that cooked fern fiddleheads taste like asparagus.

Thanks for the help!

OH I LOVE FIDDLE HEADS! I grew up in vermont and we just picked the ones that grew around the pond in our backyard. I never heard about any being toxic but I wouldnt take my word for it! YUM sauted with a bit of butter and some salt! They are also REALLY good pickled. Man I wish fiddleheads grew down here!

We have tons growing around the house. The only thing I've heard is that the "hairy" ones are not a sweet as the "non-hairy" ones. Does that make sense??? I just want to try. I love the idea of foraging a little.
