I have a small Bissell carpet cleaner and I have a house whose carpet is FILTHY....I'm not sure when it was last done and then it was empty for 5 years with realtors going in and out and no throw rugs on white carpet! Can you imagine? Not pretty! Anyway, I would love hardwood floors..I detest carpeting in my own home but this is what I have right now and need to make the best of it soooooo....it looks REALLY good right now and I have shampooed a 5 x 5 area about 5 times (emptying and refilling bucket with clean water and shampoo) but the water is STILL coming out really dirty. Do I keep shampooing until the water runs clear? I have a whole house to do yet and I started yesterday and I am still on the same area. I don't mind but just wonder what you all do....I have never used a carpet shampooer before as I've never had carpet before.
Also...I am using the shampoo that came with it but I will be running out shortly and would rather use something natural so does anyone have a recipe for a "green" carpet shampoo that I could use in a machine? Any and all advice would be appreciated!
Oh....also, when I press the lever on the handle that is when the shampoo comes out right? Do I press that when I am going forward and it picks it up when I pull it back? I can't fin the instruction book so I'm not sure if my method is correct although it looks really great and white but the water is still getting dirty.

| I don't have any suggestions about your carpet as I have all hardwood floors but I did have the same problem at my last home. We ripped out that carpet and had concrete underneath (not exaclty pretty) but for the price of three gallons of paint, a couple of sponges and painters tape, and very little artistic skill we faux painted the floor to look like tile. It turned out absolutely beautifull. E-mail me if interested and I'll send you some pictures. |

| For now, yes, you should keeop going till the carpet olooks claen- the water will likely never run celan though...when you can, you shoudl rip out the crpet thoguh, carpet is really gross, full of molds and mites and chemicals and germs- really yucky stuff- I am building a new house and will have NO carpet- yuck....good uck with your carpet cleaning!! |

Sandra- Once you get it visibly clean, try running just vinegar water through it. It's cheaper and will pull the soap residue out that can attract more dirt. Not to mention that it can help sanitize the carpet a bit more. Also make sure to have windows open and try to have fans going to. You want that carpet to dry as quickly as possible. Another thing you can do is put a squirt of dishwashing soap (like about a teaspoon or less) and a half cup of baking soda into the tank, then follow with a vinegar rinse.
