Hello, everyone! I am not quite a farmgirl yet but I surely am inside! I am planning on moving to a farm in a few years (waiting for my boyfriend to graduate, get married, and have the money to buy one). I am 22 I cannot wait! From what I've read, you all are a wonderful group of ladies and I will learn so much here! I am so glad to be here!

Howdy Nicole!
Great name. My oldest daughter's name is Nicole. My best friend growing up in south Louisiana was Nicole. That is Cajun area and her name was pronounced with a Cajun French accent....
"Nee-cole" Sometimes I call my daughter by the normal short i sound Nicole and sometimes, when my Cajun comes out it's the French way.
You are starting out with a great farm vision at a good age. You will have a lifetime of memories. Be sure to share all your happenings with us.....we'll love it!

Hi katie-ell and Luzy. Yes I am in Dupage county. I live in Elmhurst.
A little about me. I am currently a gymnasics coach at a few different park districts in my area. I live with my parents, and younger brother and sister. I enjoy growing vegetables and I am teaching myself quilting. I also like to read and actually just got finished RE-reading the Little House series (which makes me yearn so much for my own farm!!) I love to cook and bake. My boyfriend's parents call us Ma and Pa Kettle because we are always cooking or working on a quilt for our (someday) bed. In the next few years I will get married to my boyfriend (after he graduates and we have some money). We would like to find a nice farm in the southern half of Wisconsin where we can have a huuuuge garden, a few chickens, maybe some wheat.
Around here, if I said that to most people my age they would think we're a little odd. I am so glad to have found this site and be able to talk and plan with people who have my interests! I can't wait to meet you all! |

Your plans for your future sound so fulfilling and peaceful. When you're feeling down about anything just come here 'cause the gals will lift you up with tons of kind words, encouragment and prayers.

Welcome Nicole! I was born and raised in Glen Ellyn (many years ago on St. Charles Rd) and my stepson & family live in Elmhurst - small world! I too am hooked on quilting - I like the sound of that too - a quilt for your someday bed. No, your dream of a farm, or farmette is not odd or strange.....dreams are wonderful, how do you have a dream come true if you don't have a dream? We love it out on our 6.5 acres.....it sooooo quiet! Hang on and work hard and the dream will come true. I find the harder I work, the more luck I have. Glad to have met you on the farmgirl connection.

Hi, Nicole,
I'm trying this for the third time. Last night I tried posting a welcome and each time my computer shut down. I was getting plenty frustrated, but I gave it a rest and hopefully it will be better tonight. I'm sending this one from work.
All that being said, I want to welcome you to the Farmgirl forum. It is refreshing to have someone as young as you join us. It is not often you find someone your age with as strong of desire and passion to live off the land in the country. Kudos to you!! I know that you will find lots of like-hearted women such as yourself (and myself included) whose heart pines for the country while we live in "town." But it won't take long for you to see that these women here are very supportive of the attitude of your heart, offer encouragement to make your dream a reality, have a wealth of wisdom that will prepare you for the day you do find your farm and will surround you with enough prayers to get you through any situation you might have. It's a wonderful experience and you will find friends you never knew you had. So welcome to the farm, I'm glad you are here and I'm looking forward to getting to know you.

Yay, I'm excited! Another Illinois farmgirl! Oh, your future farm sounds just wonderful! I can't think of a better dream to have! I also dream of owning my own farm someday with fields of veggies, chickens pecking in the front yard, sitting on a large front porch knitting...the thought just makes me giddy! I'm also turning into a Little House fanatic! I just started reading the books, but I've been hooked on the TV show the past few months! Just today I sat by the fire wathcing Little House on the Prairie while embroidering a doll apron. Being 20 years old, I get laughed at quite a bit because of my interest in country life, mostly by my little sister. You are so lucky to have a boyfriend who shares your dream. It sounds like he's a very special person in your life. And the quilt for your someday bed sounds like a great project! I wonder if my boyfriend would make a quilt with me... Love is such a wonderful thing! I'm not too far from you, maybe we could get together sometime, you could teach me some quiltin'! It's great to meet you!

Hey Laura! It's so exciting to find someone my age and in my area who is like me! Your farm with veggies and sitting on the large porch sounds exactly like mine. I also get giddy thinking about it. I know how it is having a little sister who doesn't understand. She laughs at me sometimes.
Making the quilt with my boyfriend is fun when we actually DO work on it...he helps occasionally for a short period of time. (He's not much of a help with it at all)
I am so glad you are close. I would love to meet sometime and get all giddy over our future farmgirl plans and such! It's very nice to meet you too!

Don't worry about people thinking you are "wierd", you have just joined a large group who get many of the same comments. I have been like this since childhood, no one else in the family is "country oriented" as we call it, and they still think I am wierd and I'm 47!
I think they are the odd ones!
Hope you enjoy our little sisterhood. It is comforting. |

| Welcome to all you Chicago area farm girls. I have been looking for more...I've posted earlier but not much response. I am from Riverside, but we have a hobby farm in Amboy...80 acres. I have three kids, 16, 6,and 5. The youngest two are girls, and I am hoping to get some horses this year and introduce them to riding. I love gardening, cooking from scratch, finding ways to save money so hopefully my husband and I can retire early and move to our farm permanently! I also teach yoga. Maybe we can start a chapter! |

I'm not positive, but I think there already is a Chicago chapter. But there's nothing saying you can't make another. I'm from Illinois too, way out in the corn in LaSalle County.
Judi, there's a nice saddle club in Amboy. They do a lot of trail rides, chili suppers, and a couple of little shows. If you need some hook-up information, let me know; they're very nice people.

I assume your speaking of the Green River Saddle Club? Do you go to these events? I am hoping to get a couple of horses soon....maybe I'll see you?

Judi, yes, it's the Green River Saddle Club. They already had their tack swap and social, and yes I was there. I love their trail rides; they're relatively civilized, and the people are very nice. And there's often a choice of shorter Saturday rides or all day Sunday rides. I love the Saturday rides for young horses who simply can't go all day, or for me when I'm recovering from injuries. (I train horses, and am usually in some stage of recovery. *sigh*) I think you'd really enjoy them! Don't forget transport, though; you'll need a truck and trailer, too. I'm really stoked and eager for the nice weather!
