Hi I just found these forums and looks like I have found a home! I live in the piedmont of NC and we have a small substainable farm where we grow 15 varieties of garlic , herb vegetables Mushrooms and blackberries. My husband works a fulltime job off the farm and I try to do as much of the farming as I can. We have a son 4 years and a daughter 19 months and a 16 year old nephew who lives next door who helps with farm work and babysitting. I haven't been a farm girl all my life . Until I got married I was a teacher/ coach living the single life in the city. I often told my friends that my heart was in the country and IF I ever got married I would Move to the country. Well I didn't meet Mister right until I was 36 and 4 mos later I was married and living in the country. My husband didn't farm but lived on his family's old farm land so we thought we would try our handat farming. We started a garden and during my summers off from teaching I could raise vegetables and sell them at the farmers market. Having limited space and equipment we decided to try growing some Elephant garlic ( not much garlic is grown around here) and well... 11 years later we have a nice farm and I am no longer teaching but farming and raising our 2 children. We adopted our children and at 48 I must say I am the oldest Mom of preschool children in our rural community.
I plan to start homeschooling my son next year so I hope to talk to some of you who homeschool too.
I love the farm life and am trying to simplfy my life even more. I like to do crafts but don't have much time for that .I do LOVE to cook and create new recipes especially ones with garlic. I Make my own garlic powder and dried herb blends out of our garlic, peppers and herbs. I make jellies & salsas. I make and sell garlic herb dog biscuits also. I make lots of garlic braids each summer.
Farming here in NC only gives you 2-3 months of down time . so I am enjoyomg my down time this month!

Wow - sounds like you lead a busy life. Wonderful to have you aboard. I am 42 and no children, tried for quite some time, no luck. Thinking of adopting, but worried about being the oldest mom in the "homeroom" - after reading your story, you give me hope
Hope to learn more about your garlic farm and family.
Again, welcome.

Welcome, welcome, Garlic Lady. Your farm sounds fabulous. I, too, am one the oldest moms around here...42 with a 4 year old. My husband will be 50 this year. (I'm pretty tired, how about you?) We love NC and hope to live in the western NC mountains at some point in our lives. We'd love to farm, but know very little about it. You'll enjoy this group. Just a bunch of good hearted farmgirls. Share more with us when you have time. Rebekah

Welcome Garlic Lady. Garlic is my most favorite and used the most in whatever I cook! I make a Garlic Salad dressing that has 30..that's right 30 cloves of garlic in it...and it is awesome! let's see...In a blender place 2 c. olive oil, 30 cloves garlic, 1/2 c lemon juice, 1 t. to 1T. salt (start with lesser amount)and water if necessary to thin it out a little! It keeps the vampires away! Anyway, hope to see ya around the forum! Blessings, Mumsie

Thanks for all the welcomes. Anne adoption has been wonderful for us. We used a private agency and adopted children from our own state. The children are sibblings! we are so blessed to have them both. Both were infants when they came to be part of our family. I was about your age when we started the process. If you have any qustions you can email me. Stacy I live north of Greensboro and High Point is not too far. It is a great area to live Julia I may have homeschool questions as I get closer to staring school. Rebekah I see you are a southern girl also. Do you live near Atlanta I have some family near there? And yes Being a "forty something" mom of 2 preschoolers is tiring but it will KEEP us young! Franie My name is Natalie but even around here my customers/ friends at the farmers market call me Garlic Lady. Some of the garlics do have different flavors some are hot some mild some have 20 cloves some have 4 some are white, some are purple, Some are small some very large, some keep 3 months some keep 12 months. Some are braidable some are not. And certain kinds grow better in cold climates and some grow better in warm. Garlic is an antifungal and an antibiotic blood thinner and has been medically proven to help lower cholestoral Yes Garlic is wonderful. Mumsie That dressing sounds great I will try that one. I have one for honey garlic dressing. Check out my recipes at recipe circus the link is in my signature, I jus stared putting my recipes in there recently so I have a lot more to add. The garlic lady

Hey Garlic Lady! Totally love the name! What a great story you have. I sure do love garlic! I'm not sure if it'd be much help, but I was homeschooled in high school and believe in it very much! Can't wait to hear more about you and your wonderful farm life!
Much love, Laura |

garlic lady, i have been to Greensboro many times, you are right High Point and Greensboro are not far away. I loved the area when i lived there. I lived outside of the city on skeet club road. I hope to go back and visit someday. I am sure much has changed i would love to see the road that i lived on. I moved back to be closer to my family, and the relationship that I had while I was living there wasn't working out. I used to drive around some of the back roads down there. There is some beautiful country down there....I am fasinated by the mutitple kinds of garlic. I guess I never knew there were so many kinds. I hope to plant some this year ..only one variety for now though..lol. Which varities grow better in the cold? Peace, Stacy

| Welcome Garlic Lady! I live at Smith Mountain Lake, not that far from you I think. My in-laws live in Flat Rock. Maybe sometime you will give me a tour of your farm? I too was a single city girl and got married then moved to the country not long after. We bought a farm and I want to try my hand at farming too, so your story gives me inspiration. |

Stacy, there are lots of garlic growers up your way and several Garlic Festivals in NY each summer. Going to one of these would be a great chance to get some garlic to plant that are right for your area. If you stick with hardneck types of garlic you will be fine.
Laura I am not to far away . I am about 30 miles from Danville . We do farm tours so come on down sometime. We are vendors each year at the garlic festival in amherst VA . Have you ever been?

| No, I have not been to the garlic festival, but when I drive by the area I always see a sign that says "home of the garlic festival," or something like that. When is the garlic festival? |

Welcome garlic lady! Your farm sounds great. What is the best garlic for braiding? I've got some planted last fall that is up 3 inches already from the mild winter, I hope it will be ok? Sounds like you'll fit in just fine. Keep posting, I'll want to hear more about garlic! LOL

Me too, me too! I'm gonna try garlic on my One Cow Farm. I've so much to read my mind is spinning, but I seem to recall that if I plant it this spring then I'll have it next summer. Is that right? Also, do you sell on a roadside stand? To restaurants? This is so much fun!

Hi! Okay, I am way behind, but I wanted to say Hi. I am in Buchanan, VA, originally from the piedmont of NC. I'd love to see your farm sometime! I am homeschooling a seven-year old (almost eight) and worked in a Waldorf school until last year, so I am doing a Waldorf curriculum. One of the best places to check out is Christopherus (on the web) if that sort of thing interests you, or Rahima Baldwin's site (just google her). Anyway, I am interested in adopting, also (have tried for six years to have more babies, no luck), but am very financially limited - any suggestions? Lastly, garlic for the VA mountains - any hints? Wish you all were closer! Kirsten |
