Hi Betty. A little is better than none at all! I hope you get enough to can. I always have good luck with my beans. If nothing else does good, they do. I pick beans all summer into the fall. I'd be glad to share with you.
Nikki, about 9:00 or so last night it got so windy and there was lightning coming from your way. I thought there was a tornado coming. The goats all headed for the barn. But it only lasted a few minutes. Just a little rain. I really haven't even looked at the gardens yet. Been inside sewing curtains and doing my buttons for a swap. So. I will look in a little while. It's too darn hot out there. Even this morning while I was feeding and milking I had sweat dripping down my back. So I decided today would be a good day to be inside sewing.

Alee, I just thought of a cool thing that you could have done with the extra milk at the farm! You could have bathed in it like Cleopatra! I have always thought that "my goodness" that must have been the ultimate luxury. Along with eating gold, of course.
Betty, I bet you will be covered it beans! Your modest start will probably end in a canning frenzy!
No, Kris, I do not like to sweat either. Glad that you got some sewing done. Man, you are so diverse! But that's what women are "Jane's of all trades". I hope things are going smoothly and well with your family.
Oakley and I each got to eat ripe cherry tomatoes off of our own plant yesterday! I have a ton of basil and hope to get a chance to make homemade pesto this week! Oh, my mouth is watering!

Helllooooo, girls! I am back to posting after having recuperated from our week at the beach! Wow! What a trip! But first, welcome to you Betty and Kelly! What a treat to come back to two more gardening friends!
Soooo....as all trips, this one had it's moments and I'll try to not get too involved and emotional for ya'll, I'll spare you what I can because getting too into it makes me extremely sad. Pretty much, I lost a friendship for a while over this trip. We shared a condo with friends of ours. Brian and J have known one another since Brian was in 1st grade and C, his wife, and I have known one another for about 18 years. There were little petty things that got to me and Brian, as to be expected when you combine two households for a week, but the real conflict came after Brian had to leave. He and La and her friend came home Friday night (through those horrible storms, Nikki) because La had to go take her ACT Saturday morning. I stayed behind because we'd paid for this condo through Sunday and did so because THEY were staying until then and Brian, ever the money-man, wanted to get at least most of his money's worth. WELL, that was a mistake on his part because it seems that once he was away, THEY took the opportunity to absolutely ATTACK me about my parenting and who I allow La to be around. They jumped all over me about this other mama of one of La's friends who they have never met, never even talked to, and have completely judged her based on what they've heard.
Now that really chaps my butt!
I get extremely annoyed by people who rely on rumors and gossip as the gospel truth! They've heard bits and pieces of the truth and now believe it to be the WHOLE truth. I tried to point out that a person could hear bits and pieces of the truth about our week down there and conclude that WE are horrible parents, but it seems I was speaking to closed doors. Aaaarrgh!
But they attacked me and said some very nasty things about La. The conversation, if you can call it that, was so very bad and I came THAT close to calling my BIL to come get me and having Brian to come pick me up from their house just so I wouldn't have to drive back with them. I can't have friends like that. I don't go running to them to pass along what I've heard about their son, who is a year younger than La, because I don't know these things for truth not having seen it with my own eyes. And the whole thing has really bummed me out. I'm so very angry and yet so very sad. But guess the best part...Brian pointed out to me that I may have lost a friend, but I've gained several new ones through my "farmgirl place"! Oh, I smiled so big through my tears when he said that! I just wanted to eat him up! Isn't he a smart boy? And so right, too!
BUT, OMG, Nikki, we found the most fabulous spot off of Shell Island where we were able to find starfish and sand dollars!! It was amazing! You could feel around with your toes in the sand and come up with a palm-sized sand dollar! And once you found one, you'd find a dozen more that were smaller! We were getting all excited about finding the quarter-sized ones right off the shore in knee-deep water, then we went out a bit further and found even bigger ones! And there were sea urchins, tons of different fish, and hermit crabs every few feet! It was a critter paradise! We also saw dolphins every single day! We rented a pontoon boat and on our way out to the island, there were 4 that would tease us, swimming along with the boat only to race off and come speeding back by! It doesn't matter how many times I see a dolphin, I still get excited like a little kid just to see one arcing through the water. Brian rented a wave runner to take our 9 yo niece out and one was swimming along beside him. They could see it when they'd crest a wave.
And I ate a chocolate-pecan crusted, frozen banana for the first time ever. THAT drew some looks!
My little garden's trucking along! I came home to two squash that were monsters! I have a ton of green tomatoes, too. I picked about two dozen of the biggest green ones before we left, took some to my SIL and spread a dozen out on the counter in the sun to ripen. I have a few beginning to ripen on the vine. And my beans are coming along. Brian picked a handful when he got home that could have stood staying on the vine for a few more days, but I chomped them all up, Kris, while I was crying on his shoulder. Only a farmgirl can soothe her emotions with fresh, raw greenbeans instead of Ben and Jerry's!
Only one stalk of corn fell victim to the storms we've had the past few days. I'm afraid I left too many to grow, not having weeded them down to one per spot when they were little fellas. But I have such a hard time plucking them up! I figure that if I plant 5 seeds and 3 come up, they beat the odds and deserve a chance! Now I'm worrying about over-crowding and them not producing very big ears. Ugh!
Alee, how did your friends and their horses fare when they arrived home? And how about you? I bet Nora has a whole new vocabulary now!
Nikki, I'm so disappointed you didn't get to see any gators. You're never gonna believe this though! My SIL is a teacher and one of her fellow teachers lives at Tyndall where her husband's in the AF. This girl jogs every morning around the perimeter of the base (did you ever realize just how big that base is?) and one morning was jogging along when a car coming towards her stops in the road. Well, she stopped too, not knowing the intentions of the driver and here comes out of the edge of the woods a BLACK BEAR crossing the road in front of her! It gets to the other side and stops in the edge of the woods there and the CAR DROVE ON leaving her across the road from a bear! Can you imagine?! She said she just stood still until the bear had moseyed off into the woods deeper and then her jog became a run! OMG!!! My SIL said that black bears have been seen swimming across the bay to St. Andrews and Shell Island! We looked for bear tracks when we were on Shell Island and Brian and J both agreed that we'd found them along with deer tracks! Oh, I wanted so bad to see a bear! And all this sparked a conversation about which you'd rather come across if you were swimming out in the bay, a bear or a shark? Brian said he'd only want to come across a shark if there was a bear in the area, too, because he liked his chances with the bear out in the water and could injure it enough that the shark would attack the bear and give him a chance to get away from them both! Now when we go back down, I'm gonna be bear-scouting out at St. Andrews and will be on the look-out for bears in the bay!
Wow, it is so good to be back home and conversating with you girls again!

Hey Cherry. I missed you around here. I am so glad you're back. I'm so sorry about the bad time you had at the end of it, though. I guess it's good to get things like that out in the open so you don't waste any more time on people like that. It's sad that you've known them so long and this happens. But your hubby is right again, sweetie! You do have friends here, even if you can't see us. We are here for you any time you need us.
I went to the farmer's market in Lafayette yesterday. There were 4 of us there selling. One was a big family farm. Lots of help. I sold all my beans and squash and half the zuc and beets. So I guess I did good for the first time out. I'll pick again in the morning and go to the FM in Rock Spring tomorrow.
But I am so tired. I guess the heat just drags me down. Plus the fact when I go see Mrs. T. my almost 92 year old lady friend her house is 80 degrees and I feel like I am going to pass out from heat exhaustion, I am serious. I am sitting there fanning myself with anything I can get my hands on and she asks me if I am really hot! She says fanning is supposed to make ya hotter. Not me. I have sweat dripping down my back into other places and I am literally thinking how's the quickest way to get out of there. She has guys there this week working on her old fireplace and they're all half necked walking around and she won't turn on the air because she says there's no sense when all these people are going in and out. It's cooler outside anyway. So I finally got home and have been inside since, except to milk.
My DD cooked dinner and I ate over there. How nice is that? She used my pork chops and potatoes but that's fine with me!
I had lunch today with Kelly and her little Abby. Ya'll just have got to meet her. She is so sweet. She wants to meet ya'll, too, so we need to plan a get-together here. We'll have lunch with all the things from my garden. Plus ya'll could bring stuff from ya'll's, too. Ya'll think of a good time to come. Monday and Wed. are farmer's market days now, so any other day would be good.
I think it's time for bed, ya'll. Kris

Alee, I hope that you are able to use your keyboard now! Here is something funny. I was over at a friend's grandmother's house the other day and she was complaining about how the grandchildren dinged up her coffee table. She said something like, "You would think that after your children were grown that you would be able to have something nice and not have to worry about things getting messed up." I was like, "Oh, un-uh, once you have kids, that's it. Give it up on the having nice things bit because it ain't gonna happen!" LOL! But really. What is more valuable? A perfect coffee table or children and grandchildren to love?
Kris! Hooray for selling all of your garden bounty and having a daughter to cook for you! I'm with ya on the heat. Sometimes I go into a house and I think, "Why is it so hot in here? I bet they don't even have on the freaking air!" But maybe I am starting to go through THE CHANGE because I do get unspeakably hot from time to time. Cool that Kelly and Abby came over! What a treat! Yes, we will have to plan something!
Cherry, I CANNOT believe that I have to start researching bears and add that to my list of predators to avoid at the beach. You have blown my mind! I guess I really will end up being all nerdy like Dwight from The Office, ever ready to debate the merits of brown verses black bears. This will make Lovin' Man crazy. He pretty much put a ban on all my alligator and shark fact conversations. He is willing to talk about anything but that. Now I have to find complete strangers to unload all of my newest findings on. No one is safe. I just want them to know that. LOL!
I am glad that y'all did have some magical moments with dolphins and critters at the beach. It sounds WONDERFUL! And about the drama. I am sorry that you went through that. It's true, familiarity breeds contempt. They just felt too free to do and say and treat you however they wanted. It is not right. Glad that you are putting your foot down.
I know of a pair of sisters who are no longer talking because one of them told rumors that she had heard about the other one's son's girlfriend. It was messy! Remember that song Rumor's? I just looked it up. They said that Timex Social Club sang it. Anyway, that just brought to me a blast from the past!
Glad that everyone's gardens are still growing and haven't been pounded flat by all the violent storms and rain!
I am going out to take a photo of my cherry tomatoes right now!

Nikki, I have little bitty green tomatoes on my plants!! I was so surprised to see them. I have got to get the rest of them staked. I think I'll wait til the hubby gets home to help me.
I picked a bushel of beans and squash and zuc and will pull more beats before I go to the FM this afternoon. I am trying to get cooled off. It's TOO HOT out there already! It does look like it's getting cloudy now, though. The FM in Rock Spring is under the big huge open air agriculture thing. So we're sheltered if it rains.
I have to see Tony Shaloub from Monk is on Bonnie Hunt in a few minutes. That is my favorite show. Has anyone seen it? It comes on USA on Friday nights. I love it. Sometimes I feel really OCD but not as bad as that. Like I have to hang up all my shirts in the same colors together and towels, too. And hang them all facing the same way.

Hey, Kris, we love that show, too! We have a couple of seasons on DVD and if we give Oakley a chance to pick something to watch she always goes for Monk. I love watching it 'cause I get a kick out of pointing out what he will have a problem with and why. I relate to so many of his phobias, except the one about milk. What's up with that? LOL! But thankfully, I have to get over myself and do lots of things that gross me out and give me pause. I just keep wipes in the car and that seems to help a lot! We watched them backwards and realized that Natalie had not always been his assistant. We like her so much. The other girl was just plain mean.
Have a great day at the Farmer's Market!

Hi Ladies!
Nope- the computer is good and dead. It has to be sent off for repairs. I should have it back in about a month. My garden is doing great- the weeds are doing even better! LOL I have to hurry and get something done before I have to leave for the BBB!
OH MY GOSH. I have sooo much to do before leaving. Gotta log off and go get stuff done!!

Goodness, you girls, sure do make me smile! Nikki, knowledge is power! So you research away! Who knows when you may have to put all that worthwhile knowledge to good use and save Lovin' Man from a bear or shark or gator! Hee! Hee!
I had forgotten about that song! I just may have to post that on my FB as a little unspoken reminder of how to act. Or not act! Wow, that is a blast from the past, huh?
This heat is unreal! I was kinda worried we'd be crushed by it after that cool, wet Spring we had! Think I jinxed us? It's cloudy here right now, but the humidity is like 92%. My hair is frizzed up all over my head! I guess I need to get the shortening out if I want it smooth or I could just walk around looking like a curly-haired sheep that's in need of a good shearing!
Kris, I love it that you're already harvesting enough for the FM! Everytime you've mentioned your zuc, I've had spontaneous mouth-watering, thinking about zuchinni bread! YUM! I like watching Monk, too. He makes me feel more normal, if that's even possible. My OCD is limited to my closet, too. My clothes are arranged by color in groups, like shirts in one group, skirts in another, etc. And yes, they all have to face the same way! Now, I have a friend who is extremely OCD. She will stay up as late as needed to make sure that her house is completely, totally clean and in order! You open any drawer or cabinet in her house and it looks like a magazine picture! She even folds her dirty clothes before putting them in the hamper! The girl even bred cats and kept them in her basement and you would never guess she was harboring around 30 cats down there! I was always a nervous wreck anytime I visited her when La was little! Wears me out and stresses me out just thinking about her! But, my house always got cleaned real good after I did visit her. Somewhat.
Stay cool today, sisters!

This was a rerun from Jan. and he had a beard. Too cute. But I am in need of a Monk marathon now after seeing him. I miss him. I think new shows start in July.
I just got back from the FM and sold all but a basket of squash and a few zuc and 3 baskets of beans. I'm having fried zuc and green beans for dinner tonight. I made $43 so I figured my time of 2 hours picking, 1/2 hour drive there, 3 1/2 hours there and half hour home is 6 1/2 hours divided by 43 is $6.60 an hour. Does that sound right? No minimum wage here but good decent honest work. I'm going back Sat morning so I have to pick Fri. night. There will be plenty of squash then because it's about a few inches long now.
I have to go milk then I'm taking a shower and reading my book awhile. See ya'll!

Goodness, ya'll, does it amaze ya'll the way it does me the bond we've formed over this little forum? I felt so disconnected while I was away and it's felt like coming home, reading all of your posts.
Kris, when I think about your $6.60 an hour, the first thing that comes to mind is what you're providing for these people buying your produce. The benefits of that are priceless! And honestly, I think God will bless you in ways immeasurable for giving back from His beautiful creation! I am so proud of your garden and I've had nothing to do with it! Which only means that I'm so very proud of you and the wonderful job you've done! Never forget that you are fighting the good fight!
Alee, I hope you have a wonderful time at the BBB! Please think of us unable to attend while you're there! We'll be there with you in spirit, for sure!
Nikki, you have been such an inspiration to me, both here and on other posts! Your humor and insight is invaluable to me!
I sure do love you girls!

Kris! Aren't tomatoes like magic! I am so glad that you saw the first ones on your plants the other day. They are green gold, baby! Oakley was pointing out all of ours to me. I really hadn't noticed them all; they seemed to spring forth over night! Cherry and Alee are right about the value of what you are doing. The benefits that your customers are gaining from your fresh, organic produce are immeasurable, the exercise and "purification" by sweating in your garden are more healthful than any planned exercise, and you get the ultimate satisfaction of being self-employed! It's a win-win-win!
Alee, I thought that computer would die. I am sure that you will love teasing Nora about her computer murdering escapades when she is older and you have trouble tearing her away from it. She will NOT believe that she would ever commit such a sacrilege. --- Oh! I am so excited that you are going to the BBB!!! You will have to tell us all about it! That sounds like the most awesome gathering that I can imagine....all those farmgirls together! The very air will vibrate with the energy of THAT crowd!
Cherry, LOL about being an inspiration. Y'all encourage me! Y'all make me laugh, have gone through a lot of similar trails, and give great advice. It makes me so happy knowing that all of y'all are out there in your various parts of the country farmgirling around and living. It gives me a homey feeling.

I would not want to be doing anything else at all but what I do now. Even though I do sweat like crazy and end up filthy and stinky, it's great. Thanks for the encouragement. It's not about the money at all. But when people complain about some of the prices it hurts. They don't realize what all is involved in growing that little seed and getting it to that FM then to their plates. Anyway, it is very fullfilling to me to know that what I have done brings pleasure to others.
One of the men that bought green beans Monday from me was there yesterday. He came up to me and said those beans weren't any good at all. I was like WHAT and he just laughed. Scared me to death. I was ready to pack up and leave. But he said they were so good and he loved them. So that makes it all worth it to me.
I can't wait to see ya'll! We'll have our own little farmgirl party here. What fun! And I will not make ya'll pick beans unless ya'll want some to take with you.
I feel the same way, Cherry.

Wow, today I harvested two heads of cabbage, a finally ripe tomato (if all the others ripen at the same time, I'll be in trouble!), a handful of green beans, a few leaves of curly leaf lettuce, and two more squash. Gardening is good!!
Kris, I'd have been packin' it in, too! I'm so glad he was pulling your leg! Maybe he'll spread the word for ya!
Alee, my pinto beans are about that size. I can't wait until they're big enough to eat!!!

Alee, that's so sweet that you shared that strawberry with Nora. I bet it was so much better that way. Mine quite bearing right after all the cedars were cut down and hubby weed whacked all around them. I have seen flowers so I hope they have more soon. I think it was maybe the shock of so much sun after being in shade most of the day plus this awful heat. And yes, you need more plants!
I am so jealous of Cherry getting ripe tomatoes. We never get them til after July 4th. I bet it was the best tomato ever, I had a salad the other day at Panera when I ate lunch with Kelly and I just could not eat those tough ole things that were supposed to be tomatoes. Just no flavor at all. I hate to waste but still.
I have never grown pinto beans. I am growing field peas this year for the first time. I will have to try pintoes next year. Do you have to wait til they're dry to pick?

| Speaking of bounty, my fridge is full of zuccinni, squash, cucumbers! And there is more to pick! I put some in the freezer, I sliced and blancehed them, I hope they will be ok, I never put yellow squash in the freezer before. I guess we'll see what happens, I had one big zuc, hiding underneath, so zuccinni bread on the way. So nice to be included in this thread, sounds like we may have a get together sooner than we think, we really aren't that far apart, and with sweet Kris in the middle, the perfect meeting place. Abby has been talking about your goats,Kris, she really wants to try milking. Maybe we can come down next week, if that works for you. Alee, That strawberry had to be good especially sharing it with sweet Nora, I didn't think to plant some, well, maybe next year! |

Kelly, I'm not too sure about freezing squash, either. I've only done it for short periods of time, like a few days, because I'm the only one in my house to eat it. So I'd slice up what I didn't use for that meal, lay it out on a jelly roll pan and freeze, then bag in little single serve bags. After a few days, it'd start getting freezer burn, but that's how someone told me to do it, so I did.
But I've been wondering if I can batter it and then freeze it that way for fried squash and it last longer?
The only thing I've ever blanched then frozen has been green beans.
Kris, I'm not sure about the pinto beans. I need to ask Grandmother about it. But I'm afraid that if I wait until they're dry to pick, the plants won't produce as much. And those tomatoes! I still have 10 that are green that I picked before we went to FL because they were beginning to look like they were ripening and I quit counting at 30 on the vine yesterday, so I'm truly hoping they DON'T all ripen at once. I want to make tomato sauce and can it because we eat alot of it, but my picky eaters don't want seeds in it! But, yes, Kris, I have a difficult time eating restaurant tomatoes. They just taste "off" to me! And I don't want to seem like I'm rubbing it in your face, but my little ripe tomato was delish! La and I shared it at supper last night!
I planted just one strawberry plant, in a pot, and have had only two from it. :( Next year I will be planting more! But Alee, those were the best two strawberries I've ever ate!

Hello out there fellow farmgirls!!! Remember me....LisaLu? My computer has been down for months now, and work has kept me away from home, and then there is the garden.....OMG.....it's going crazy! I have so many strawberries, I'm sick of picking...my freezers are full...hopefully I can make jam sometime soon (maybe in September when I catch up!). The boysenberries are giving me about 2 cups a day, the blackberries are full of flowers, the sunflowers are blooming in all different shapes and colors, swiss chard is about 8" tall and the stems are orange, red white and yellow, pole beans reach up to the sky winding around a beautiful rod iron sculpture, my fennel is going to seed, has anyone ever eaten the flowers? They taste just like licorice! I have cinderella pumpkins, one plant keeps producing more and more, I think I counted 14 pumpkins on the one plant! The artichokes that I left on the plants are blooming bright purple and the fall crop just sprouted up. My tomatoes are loaded with huge green toms, I have every color I could find, white, orange, yellow, purple, black and red. My carrots are so sweet, I planted red ones this year, they look so pretty in salads, and the grapevines have more grapes than leaves. My husband and I took a stroll through the orchard last week (sunset is my favorite time, and I love to sip wine as we go)and much to our surprise, the apricots were so ripe they were falling off the tree onto the ground! I picked them all up, dusted off the ants, and hope to make jam ( maybe next year!), our fig tree is so loaded I don't know what to do with all those figs.... Our orchard is only 2 years old and already the trees are producing, It's so exciting! Anyways, just thought I'd share my little piece of heaven with y'all... I only wish there were farmgirls out here....it too bad I can't share all this....
