Kris, I sure am glad the solution to your spoilt milk is an easy-fix. It's a good thing you caught it before our days on end of 90 degree weather!
I've never had buffalo, but, of course, Grandmother has. She ate it on one of her trips to Yellowstone and said she liked the steak better than the ground. She's also had kangaroo when she went to Australia. She tries to eat something "exotic" on all of her trips. Last I heard, one of my Jasper cousins was raising buffalo to get into the meat business. I don't know if anything's ever come of it. Talk about a true-blue, redneck, country girl!! She always, always wears her Wranglers and cowboy boots no matter where she goes and she dips, braggin' that she can out-spit her brother! Yuck!
Nikki, I'm gonna try to send our pics to Aldridge Garden to see if they can identify the "drug" plant! SOMEbody has got to know what it is! I told Grandmother that the one you had a picture of is tree-sized and she got excited that her's will grow more and be around longer. It's only knee-height.
And thank you, girls, we had a blast! My belly muscles are so sore this morning from playing with those girls! We had to ride the horse for over an hour! My sister, Sharon, finally told the girls that this old horse needed to be put out to pasture. While I welcomed the break from it, I really didn't appreciate her choice of words! I love those little chickies so much and have so much fun with them! My sister told us yesterday that they'll be moving to Prattville (almost 2 hours south of Birmingham) soon and my poor mama is so upset. She's used to seeing the chicks several times during the week.
What cracks me up about Grandmother, Kris, is that that table cloth is actually plastic and is even taped with Scotch tape on the top, but those were her good linen napkins and her crystal glasses!
I've had nasturtium tea, but haven't had them in salad before. I knew you could eat them just never had the opportunity. That's a good addition to a kitchen garden, huh? And if you don't get around to eating them, you have pretty flowers to look at! I hope you have tons of blooms!
Grandmother was thoroughly impressed with the veggies I took her from my garden! She told me they were really pretty. And I'd picked some of the biggest green tomatoes for her to fry up for herself and she was thrilled with that. Said that she'd have fried green tomatoes and squash and onions for supper tonight! I could literally feel my head swelling! (Hee! Hee!)
Nikki, have you had to rent a U-haul for your trip this week-end? I can't wait to hear how much fun you had and about your adventures! You MUST take lots and lots of pics!

I think I am drowing in milk!
I still have a gallon and a half of milk left from yesterday's milking- I am drinking a HUGE 20 ounce glass right now (It's my breakfast so I figure that the calories are okay! LOL) Nora has drank some, and I have fed the baby puppies and the baby goats. And I still have that gallon and a half left! I even put milk on the dog's food last night!
I know once the family gets back they will be using it faster. Bry's baby drink it, and most everyone else drinks it too. But wow! With just Nora and I here it sure is stacking up! We could probably get by with just one or two goats for ourselves if we ever decide to have dairy goats, but I don't know if I want to...my hands still hurt!

Alee, how are your hands? I hope you don't have carpel tunnel syndrome. You know, I never considered that people back in the old days could have been subject to that sort of thing. I thought that it was more of a modern malady, but gosh, I can imagine how that much milking would really put a strain on you!
Cherry, did you find out what that drug plant was? Are you over your soreness from being the human carnival with the nieces? LOL! That looked like a lot of fun. Callie Grace seems to have uncanny balancing ability! She needs to go into gymnastics!
Kris, that Eagle's Rest Ranch looks really neat and not just because of the buffaloes! I am going to email them and find out if they allow tent camping at their RV sites. That would be a great place to stay the next time I feel like going to Lookout Mountain! How is your garden growing?
I got home and found my cherry tomatoes turning from green to orange! We will be eating those things soon! If we were going to be surviving just on my garden then our diet would consist of basil and tomatoes sprinkled with nasturtium petals, pretty but not filling. HA!
Oh, y'all! I have spring fever and I am not referring to the season. I am already planning on trips to more springs. I just found out that if I had only gone another 50 miles down the road we could have seen one of the world's largest and deepest springs! As it was we camped at Falling Waters State Park, a beautiful little place with exceptional clean camping facilities. We went to Morrison Springs, Ponce de Leon Springs State Park and Vortex Springs and rounded out the trip by going to Panama City Beach since we were so close. I am going to write a somewhat full story about it with pictures and post it in the Outpost section. I haven't had a chance to work with my photos since I live with computer hogs!
Oh, but I looked all over Florida in every swamp and lake we passed, while kayaking in the springs, while wading in the lake at Falling Waters, and we even went down to the lake at night and I never saw a single alligator. Not one. I am sure that they were there. Heck, we even saw the signs warning of their presence. But dang it, I didn't see one!

Nikki, you're back! I missed you. I am so glad you had a good time. How did your mom do? It sounds like you all had a great little mini vacation. Can't wiat to see pics. I'll go look later.
And there is another place here on highway 136 called Hidden Hollow. They have it all there. Primitive camping for people like ya'll and cabins for me! A lake and all sorts of game areas for the kids. Lots of hiking trails, too. So lots to do there and you could see me, too! It's just about maybe 10 miles from me. You could look it up on line, I guess. I'll try to and see what I get.
My beans are all full of flowers. In about 3 weeks or so I'll be covered up in beans after spending all day picking them. I'll finally get to go to the market!
Alee, are you home yet?
Hey Cherry.
Ya'll have a great day! Kris

Hi Ladies- Nope! I am still at the ranch. I was planning on leaving today but am not staying a few extra days. The trip for my friends has turned into a nightmare... Flat Tires, brand new truck breaking down, bad helper-drivers, helper drivers (boyfriend/girlfriend) getting into fight and refusing to speak to each other, helper driver running borrowed horse trailer into gas pump and denting it, horse getting pnemonia and having to stay 2 days before show at vet hospital, helper deciding she didn't want to help show or prep for show, and now the hauler that was supposed to haul that stallion home had a truck break down and can't pick him up until Thursday. I just hope the show pays off in other ways and I think it has- Infinite's reputation should be world wide now.

Sounds like you enjoy gardening. I would love to be your neighbor, I'd be out there helping. I'd love to see pictures of your garden. Happy gardening to you! Marly

Hey Marly. Come on over, there will be plenty to do in a few weeks here and I'll need all the help I can get! I'm trying to talk Nikki and Cherry to come one day and bring their kids and I'll put them to work. I do dread all those long rows of beans the worst. They take forever to pick. I hate looking behind me when I'm picking because it seems like I haven't gotten anywhere. So yeah, come on, I have extra room and a camper, too! I'd love it.
Alee, I do hope your hands get better soon. I have one doe that I just started milking that I have to take several breaks before I'm done. She gave almost 5 pounds this morning. I know she felt lighter but my hands sure were tired.

Kristin- in quarts- how much is 5 lbs? There is one goat here that I think she gives half a gallon just by herself! It's crazy!
My hands are feeling better today... less random numbness but I am also trying to make sure to take some tylenol whenever I get a numbness spell coming on. If I can keep the inflamation down the tendon sheaths will heal- I have been checked for carpal tunnel several times and they don't think I have that yet but it does run in my family...

I missed y'all, too! There were so many things that happened that I thought to myself, "I can't wait to tell the girls THIS!"
Marly, we're going to have a farmgirl-bean-harvesting-good-time over at Kris's. Kris is going to wear her umbrella hat, Cherry is going to borrow her grandmother's with the enormous white feather and I'm going to borrow my mom's huge, pink straw one. We'll look like the circus came to town! LOL! So grab a crazy hat and join the gang!
Yeah, Kris, I haven't asked how your umbrella hat is working out. Have you been using it?
Alee, it sounds like your frineds have been through a nightmare of a trip! I am sure that they will be so relieved to get home. I'm glad that they were able to achieve more fame and glory for Infinite. Now people will be clamoring to breed their mares with him and there will be infinite numbers of them.
You know, mom did really well camping. It was the first time ever in her nearly 61 years that she had tent camped! I was so surprised by that. Thank God that the weather was absolutely perfect with no rain and low humidity and pleasant temperatures. She seemed to enjoy cooking over the fire, too.
There was one problem though. When she called me from Academy Sports and told me that she had just bought two air mattresses, I was surprised and pleased that she was investing some money in camping supplies. Maybe, if she has special equipment I would be able to get her to do it again, I reasoned in my mind. Well, when the time came to blow up the "mattresses" that first night, she got two pool rafts out of a bag. Floaties! And not the clear and silver kind that are relatively thick. No. These were the thin cheap, colored kind that have a pillow at one end and look like tubs stuck together. I was both highly amused and slightly annoyed. How were they going to sleep on those things? They did somehow manage, although there were a few times during the night that I thought I heard them POP!
Where's Cherry?

| Kris, Let me know when the beans are ready for pickin' Abby and I will come help too! My beans are just now blooming, did you say you planted bush beans or pole beans? I put string up for mine last night, how do you tell if they are climbers? I am wondering if they will "grab" on to the string? |

Kelly, mine are the Blue Lake bush beans. I just love the beans because they have no strings but absolutely hate to pick them! They are so low to the ground. I take my little step stool and just sit and pick. I also have planted climbing beans to go up my corn, too. I hope this works. They have all come up now I just hope they can all find the corn to start climbing up! Usually the package tells if they are bush or climbing. What are they and I might could tell you what they are.
I was just kidding about picking beans, ya'll. It is alot of work. But if ya really want to...
Yes, where is Cherry? I hope she's ok. Maybe she's started a new job or the housing market has taken off and she's selling houses like crazy.
Alee, that does sound like the trip from hell, for sure. Poor horses. I am glad that the stallion did so well. He'll be a busy boy for sure now! Do people bring the mares to him to breed?

Kris- No the stallions don't get to do what is called "Live Cover" Other wise they get "spoiled" and only want to do live cover and they won't breed to the Artificial... We need them to breed to the AV so we can ship to mares all over North America.
Well they are on their way home- they should be home in a day or two so that will be nice. Then I will be headed home probably Saturday or Sunday. The latest would be possibly Tuesday- just waiting for my debit card now. :(

Oh, Alee! I know that you are going to miss your farm life, but I bet you sure will be glad to get home! We are watching "Frontier House" again and they were milking goats and making cheese and I thought about you and Kris! I asked Lovin' Man if he thought that we would have done well on that show and he was positive that we would have, but wow, I don't know.
Some of my cherry tomatoes have turned red! I think that I will get to "harvest" some today!
Kris, wouldn't it be so cool for a band of farmgirls to descend on your farm and strip your beans off the plants like a pack of locusts? They would bring chicken salad and potato salad and their mother-in-law's recipe of chocolate pudding, yummy crunch and a pitcher of watermelon lemonade and get the work done in a seventh of the time if Kelly, Abby, Cherry, La, Nikki, and Oakley all lent a hand?

Now that makes me want to just go and plant another 5 rows, Nukki! Wow, that would be so much fun. We could all have our own row that way. The only thing about beans is the more ya pick the more they gorw. Last year I picked 3 rows all summer long. Probably got 20 bushels off them. I called them the never ending bean plants. I also have okra forests, too. They got so big I could hide in them and no one would ever see me. And the Hickory King corn is also huge and very tall. I was always thinking of the movie "Children of the Corn" when I was in there picking it. I had to pull the stalks over to get to the corn.
I need to go see if the squash is big enough to pick yet. They are out there but taking their sweet time in getting big enough to pick. We need some more rain, I hate to say. It did rain up the road about a mile away for about a mile then nothing anywhere else. That's the strangest thing. Sometimes you can see the rain right up the road but it won't come here. Or it will be here and not there.
I am so jealous of you with your ripe tomatoes already. Mine are about 1 1/2 feet tall now. I did see some little peppers on some of the plants earlier this morn. I know ya;ll will enjoy those.

Oh you lucky girl. I was going to go to Colorado Springs the first part of July but can't go now. It's just the wrong time of year for me to take off. I hope you have a great time. Where will ya'll be going?
I just went and picked a huge basket full of squash and zuc. And a few green beans, too! Me and Kansas ate them, though. I love fresh raw green beans. I guess I'll saute some for dinner tonight with onions. Yummo! And parmesan cheese on top. Oh that sounds good. It would sound really good if I weren't still stuffed from breakfast.
I hear thunder rumbling in the west. We just got done mowing and the SIL weed whacked. He did the old flower-weed garden and saw me looking over that way and said he was careful and went around the flowers that were left. Men and weed whackers scare me.
I am trying to cool off some. It's hot out there, ya'll. I gotta get some ice water.

Yes, Kelly, we will have to wait until you can get back from vacation and also so Kris can plant some more beans. LOL!
Kris, your food sounds so good! I am about to have some of my Aunt Donna's squash and zuc melt for breakfast - cold. It tastes good any way that you have it! Oh, all the flavors have melded so nicely in the fridge; it is almost like a chilled soup at this stage.
Cherry is on vacation, so everything's good.
Today, I'm off and Oakley, my brother, and I are going to visit a cousin in the country. We will be driving through the place where we spent the happiest years of our childhood and it always seems to be smaller every time I see it. Ha! David has such vivid memories of the place, even though we moved away when he was only 7. I love getting to share these sorts of things with Oakley, and I just feel sorry for her that I can't completely give her the entire experience of what it was like to grow up in that time and era. It was magical.
Y'all have a great gardening day!

| Kris, the beans sound yummy! I am waiting patiently for mine. We are going up North to see the New England States. Flying to Long Island, NY to visit my dad and brother, then taking the ferry over to Conn. from there who knows, we are just going to drive up the coast and try to see as much as possibe. Your flowers sound like mine, I let the kids spread seed at the end of the garden, and the weeds are all in the flowers! The flowers are a bit taller so we can still see them!!! |

I think I have enuf beans for now. It's just way too hot out there to even step out the door. I am drenched in sweat just milking the goats this morning. I do not like the heat at all. It is a bit cloudy and might rain but that's fine with me. I might go stand out in it.
I have been cleaning goat and chicken yards and taking the straw-poop mix and mulching around my cabbage and peppers and will do the tomatoes tonight when it gets cooler. But I noticed that a few hens have already been out there rearranging all my hard work. So now I have to redo all that on top of the new. It's always something. There are 3 hens that have a new nest under the big cedar tree near the garden. It's alot more convenient for me but too close to the garden for them. But I have been getting 3 eggs a day from them plus the 2 in the actual nester in the hen house. Not too bad, 5 eggs a day. I have over 3 dozen now. I might need to try to sell them.
I am glad to know Cherry is ok. And Nikki, I hope ya'll have a great time. Or had, by now. Alee, I bet you will be glad to get back home and get some rest. You have had a busy but fun 2 week vacation.
Kelly, I want to go up to New England too some fall when my hubby goes up there. I have been saying this for years and will someday. That's my dream to go see all the beautiful little villages and all the colorful treea in the fall. I hope you have a great time.

Kris, I am wondering if you got pounded by that storm last night like we did. Two of my potted tomato plants were blown over and it is still raining, so I haven't gotten out there to inspect the damage. Funny that you have enough beans now! You must have had another OMG moment. Ha! - Oh, I hope you get to go to New England in the fall! Don't put it off! Go for it!
Kelly, what a neat vacation that y'all have planned! I love leaving some things to chance and having adventures along the way on trips by keeping the plans loose and fluid. In fact, my most enjoyable moments on trips have come from the unexpected, side-road explorations!
Alee, wow! These two weeks you've had a baptism by fire, haven't you? I would love to find out what you have decided that you DO and DON'T want to do with animals and such on your farm!
Yesterday was a perfect day to go out and we had a great time. I love being with my cousins. Just something about family, you can be yourself and you share so many memories, we take right up where we left off. We ended up going to Mardis Mill Falls (here's a link to a gorgeous photo of it that I DID NOT TAKE, but oh, they did an excellent job http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirgon/443487926/ ) and to a few covered bridges in the area and we discovered a pretty lake with monster fish in it! Too bad that we didn't have poles! The water was so clear and the fish were so close, I thought about trying my hand at catching one like MaryJane did by tickling its belly, but I wouldn't have know what to do with it when I got it! They were about two feet long and so close to the bank; it was such a temptation. They didn't realize what danger lurked above. LOL!

It has taken me three plantings and I'm finally getting some bean plants. They either didn't germinate or the bugs got them, don't know which. I'm hoping to get enough to can a few 1/2 pint (seem like a waste of time?) jars. You can pack more into the jars than you can get in the cans that contain a lot of water.
