St. Elmo is having a great big neighborhood yard sale this Sat!!! I am so gonna be there. My parents are coming up but I don't care, I'm going to St. Elmo. I love yard sales. But I hate to have them. All the time it takes to sort and price and then people don't want to pay more that a dollar for anything. Out church is having a sale for the teens and I always have them come clean me out here. And I feel good about helping them out. That's kind of my tithe for the year!

Cherry, you are right about things tasting amazing when you grow them yourself. Because it's so fresh, not trucked in from Mexaco last week. That's the thing about corn, too. I can just eat it raw off the stalk. And green beans, too. Raw off the vine is so good. People at the farmer's market can't believe you can eat a bean raw. My Kansas will go around giving people samples of raw beans and they are like can we eat it raw? Like, yes. It's actually so much better for you raw. I love raw squash, too. Yumm. You'll have tomatoes soon enough, too.

I love them, too! I don't get to go too often, but I try to hit them when I can. Alot of my problem with having them is knowing how much I paid for a thing and it's barely used and someone wants to give me absolutely nothing for it and I know, know, know they're just gonna turn around and put it on ebay and make so much more for it! La's putting her dirtbike gear in this one and I know I'm gonna have to argue over it and am NOT looking forward to it! Well, that problem's solved! I'm on the phone with Brian and he said I'm to absolutely NOT put that dirtbike gear in the yard sale! Case closed!

We would eat raw soybeans all the time when TT farmed them! Before it was ever popular to do so. When my brother and cousins were babies, Mama and my aunts would spread out a quilt for them under the mulberry tree where we'd sit to shuck and cut corn, snap beans and such and we'd give the babies the corn cobs to chew on.

I know people can't resist Kansas! And I think it's absolutely wonderful that she's growing up with you teaching her about gardening and fresh food. That baby girl already knows more than most grown-ups! That's one of the things I feel I've cheated La out of. When she was younger, I did take her in the woods a lot on our "scavenger" hunts, looking for critters and different kinds of flowers. She really had fun with that when she was Oakley's age. And Brian and I did have a garden for a few years running when we were first married and when she was a baby. But then LIFE just interferred and besides all my flower beds and potted tomato plants, this is only the 2nd garden we've had since we moved here. (The first one was too far from the house and was absolutely devoured by the deer!!) Now that she's 17, she's just not interested in it. I'm hoping she'll come around when she gets older.

Just got off the phone with Grandmother. She gave me a recipe for aphids, black spot, root rot, and a whole host of other ailments our little gardens might suffer. One tablespoon baking soda, one teaspoon dishwashing liquid (preferrably Dawn or Joy), to one gallon of water. I asked her about adding the onion and garlic to it, Tina, and she said it couldn't hurt. She said I probably used too much dishwashing liquid in mine and that's why my leaves are turning black. She said to pluck them off and not use so much next time. Well, of course!

Oh, Alee, it is so wonderful that you were there! I can imagine you, holding onto that umbilical cord and calling for a hemostat, stat! So very ER and professional! Can't wait to see him! - Maybe you could name him "Infinity" or "10 to the Infinite Power" or just "Infinite Power" or just "Power" would be good. Whew! That would be a name to live up to!

Kris, I will take photos at Pepper Place this Saturday. I hope that you won't be disappointed by them though. I never like the photos because somehow they just can't capture the happiness of it all. You can't hear the live music being played and the laughter and conversations of the farmers and customers. Or smell the fresh brewed coffee and lovely, lovely baked goods. You can't feel the soft, furry coats of the many friendly dogs that people are walking and you can't taste all of the fresh produce. It really is a sensory experience above all!

Cherry, I am sorry that you can't go this Saturday! Maybe in a couple of weeks! Glad that La is being so responsible and trying to rustle up some money to go toward the car and expenses! Although, pricing the items is the worst job and yuck, that you got stuck with it. Ha!

I hope that homemade bug spray will work! And I am sure that in another 10 years La will be all into gardening and you will be able to tell her just the right amount of Joy to put in her bug spray!

Yes, Kris, you are teaching them what "fresh" tastes like! They will always hanker for that super fresh taste and realize that if they want it they will have to grow it for themselves and all that time that you put into teaching them will come round full circle when they begin recalling your lessons and teaching others, too. What a beautiful circle of love and life lessons will be drawn from that! Never ending.

Baby squash in the field!!!! I am so exited! I saw 2 plants with little ones. I need to plant a new crop now. All the corn and beans and peas are up. And I saw all the okra, too! Also the running beans are coming up. So we're on the way to a great harvest. So fun.

Nikki, I think I will be able to get the feel of the place just by how you described it. You have a great way of making ne feel like I am there. Thanks. You are so sweet to say all those nice things about me. Sometimes I get down on myself and then I come here and get lifted up by all you great farmgirl friends. I truely feel blessed to have met you all and hope to meet face to face soon.

Well, I am so thankful to have found you, Kris! And Alee and Cherry. I am learning so much from y'all and enjoy so much all of y'alls stories. Y'all make me laugh and make me think and encourage me so much, as well. Everyone should be so lucky! And there was no way on God's green earth we would have met except for on this site, so cheers for MaryJane!

Alee, no wonder you're so tired. My goodness, girl, you've been birthin' baby horses and rescueing baby goats and mucking out all those stalls and playing with your own beautiful horse and butchering cows. And I almost forgot milking goats, too. Good grief, that's probably not the half of it. I'd be going to bed early, too. Get some rest so you can start all over again in the morning. Good night.

And I am so glad ya'll have joined me on this fun journey. I look forward to all the chit chat here myself. I feel like I have made some very good friends here and I can be myself. I don't have to impress anyone here.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day. My parents are here for the late May-early June birthdays. Chloe just turned 10 Wed. my hubby turned 61 yesterday, my oldest DD wil be 30 Thursday and I will be 51 next Friday. So we will do birthday parties tomorrow afternoon after going to yard sales in the morning. Then I have to meet a milk customer in Chattanooga at 3 to deliver milk! I am so exited about that. There are 3 families from Cleveland, Tn. that are going to get milk from me. Plus my people here. So here i go with the milking. I've been putting the momma's in the backyard during the day to milk at night. I've only been getting a gallon and a quart so far. I think I'd rather put them up at night though. Anyway, I have an ad on Craig's list and in the paper so I hope I get these little guys sold soon.

Oh and there were several people mowing hay today!! Yeah! I hate getting hay and it's my all time least favorite thing to do here, but I am slap out and was getting worried. So my friend will be doing hers this weekend and baling either Sunday or Monday. So that's what I'll be doing soon. Ya'll please pray the rain holds off at least til Tuesday so we can finish this cutting.

Kris, I will pray for it to stay dry for ya! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope y'all have a fabulous party time for everyone and get some great stuff at the yard sales! Congrats on the new milk customers, as well!

Alee, phew! I know that you must be tuckered out, girl. You have been going nonstop on your sabbatical. I hope you get to sleep-in today!

Cherry, I hope that y'all make some big bucks today with your yard sale and that you don't have to dicker too much with customers over prices!

I'm going to go to Pepper Place this morning and then a little more shopping and I hope the weather is good so that we can go hike this trail that I have been wanting to explore but wouldn't do it by myself without Lovin' Man.

Y'all have fun and can't wait to hear about your adventures!

Nope! I didn't! Nora woke up at 5:30 our time and started calling the hungry hordes (the dogs) upstairs. I slept with one last night but that's nothing to the five that came and pounced on me in joy that they had "found" me. They are sight hounds so if they can't see or hear you....anyway- I think I have doggy paw bruises on my back from the Pharroh Hound and some scratches from the Cirnecos but it's all good. You don't often wake up to that much joy. Okay so I was a little less than joyful for the first 15 minutes...let me bury my head under the pillow for 15 more minutes...LOL

So here is what I have to get done today:

Milk six goats
clean 13 stalls
trot mare while helper holds foal
work Tala
feed all 18 horses 3x today plus the cows and the goats.

I think I will be pretty tired at the end of the day today. Today is the first day I have had to clean stalls. My helper has family here so she won't becoming except to help me trot the mare.

Well, Alee, I was gonna whine about how pooped I am after my two days involved with putting on a yard sale. But you've shamed me with some truly labor-intensive stuff. So, I'll keep my moanin' and groanin' to myself. Girl, your days are starting to sound like Kris' days! Just throw a garden in the mix! Ya'll make me tired just reading about all you do in a day! Hats off to you, sisters!

La was able to make $100 today. I got some much needed de-cluttering done. And the Hannah Home received some nice donations. Pretty successful day!

Wish I had a moment to write more, but Brian's pulling up after a long day himself and I should give him some attention! And help with unloading MORE logs! A woman's work is never done.

Well so far I have only done one stall. Nora has been a terror today. First she escaped as I was wheeling a wheelbarrow out of the stall and got into the arena with a mare and foal. Luckily the mare was very kind and didn't kill my daughter. Then I put her in the yard where it is fully secured while I went to go do the milking AND she climbed the fence in with the big goats. *sigh* She got a bit smashed by one of the pushier goats, but was unharmed. Just scared. Good as far as I am concerned. So I put her in the car (parked in the shade) right by the milking barn so I could keep an eye on her so I could milk the last two does. She really likes to pretend to drive so I thought it was a perfect solution. Checked on her as I brought the last doe. Everything was fine. Well after putting the last doe away I came back to a LOCKED and EMPTY car. Sheesh. I didn't think she could open the doors! So then she got put on house arrest and after doing the noon feedings I came back in to find she had found the sprayer bottle of iodine and squirted iodine all over the kitchen. I am pooped. I guess I will do the stalls tonight after Nora is in bed. At least it will be cool out!

Hey ya'll. Sounds like everyone has had a busy Sat. It's almost 10:00 pm and I just now sat down. Very crazy day here.My parents are here and when they come we shop. Well, me and mom shop. They have bought a camper to leave here to stay in while they are here because my Dd and her family are in our little house now. So we had to get hoses and hook all that up and of course every single one of my hoses have holes all over so they had to go to town and get more hose. Anyway that is finally taken care of.

But me and mom hit all the yard sales we could find this morning. I found some good stuff, ya'll/ A Tasha Tudor cookbook in great condition for just 4 bucks, a beautiful little pottery tea pot for $2 and a box of nice cards for $1. Then we found some people in front of a church in St. Elmo that had some good stuff, too. I found a cute little hand quilted pink baby quilt for $2, a round table cloth, a book called Plain and Simple by Sue Bender about her journey to the Amish. Then my mom found a shoe box FULL of old costume jewelry. She started looking through it picking out brooches and this and that and finally asked the guy how much he'd take for the whole box. I had taken out a cute little mirror first. But he thought a few minutes and said $50. Ya'll, there is so much beautiful jewelry in that box! Old earbobs and necklaces and 2 very old rings that are probably worth a bunch. So she got the best treasure of the day. There was lots more but I can't think of it all. I did find the kids some shoes at a thrift store. Coryn got the cutest bright pink shoes with lime green on the bottom with a little heel. That girl loves shoes and dresses. Anyway, it was a long day out there.

I met the people for the goat milk. They had a yard sale today, too. Then home for the birthday party. We just had sandwiches and chips, then cake and ice cream then presents! I got a gift card for Target, my favorite store, and an Eagles and Eric Clapton cd's. And Nikki, my DD and her boyfriend got me an UMBRELLA hat!! How cool is that! And I didn't even say anything about that. I will be wearing that for sure. I might look like a complete idiot, but it's gonna be on this old head. So all in all a pretty good day.

I finally got the kitchen and dining room cleaned up. My other DD said she is oing to clean my house next week for me!I will have to take all the kids to the park while she's cleaning, though. But I will enjoy that as long as I can sit in the shade somewhere.

Oh and tomorrow there is a lady from Chick. coming to look at the goat babies!! I hope she buys some. They are annoying little buggars now. When I milk they all have to come out with the does and they et trampled. And the triplets are hilarious. They have been coming into the milkroom and nursing while their momma is on the stand! Then I milk Jessie and bottle feed the one who doesn't get a teat. Then the kids jump up on the feed barrel and onto the shelves and become total neusances. But it's so funny. They are so thin they fit right thru the wooden fence. So maybe she will take some home with her.

Then a man is supposed to come to see the goats and get milk, too! And I might end up going to get hay, too. It was a great sunny day all day and my friend got her hay mowed and raked. They like to let it dry a few days before baling so I hope to do it Monday. I'm just getting 30 bales this time. Then the rest later in the season. I figure I'll need at least 200 bales for the winter.

Ok, that was long. I hope ya'll had a great day. And Alee, I hope you get all those stalls cleaned tonight. I am glad Nora didn't get hurt today. Kansas got head butted by one of my does right on the butt and knocked her down. She was ok but scared.

Nikki, tell us about your hike today. I bet you got more beautiful pictures.

Cherry, I'm glad ya'll had a good yard sale. Too bad you weren't closer or me and mom would have been there.

Kris

Hi Kris- Thanks. Nora walked in front of the goat and they were crowding the gate to get out. So the goat butted her several times before I could jump in the kicking them out of the way (they can be pushy beggars can't they?!). She kindof got ground into a fence poll and they have such boney heads. But Nora is tough and only cried for a little bit. But I bet she gets a bit of a bruise.

Oh my goodness, Alee! It sounds like you had a time of it, girl! Nora is SMART! What a precocious, little cutie! And that is great! She will learn very fast what dangers to avoid and you won't have to tell her again! Pain can be a very good teacher. LOL!

Wow, Kris! You had an awesome full day. So glad that you found so many treasures. I read that book Plain and Simple and I liked it; although, I was a little disappointed with Sue for being down on the overweight wife who fed her family sugary stuff for breakfast. I guess because I do that sometimes. I mean, you gotta do what you gotta do! I can't WAIT to take a photo of you in your umbrella hat; I am laughing just thinking about it!

Cherry, I bet La feels so good about raking in that dough for y'all! I'm glad that it went so well! I thought that I was going to have to unload logs, too, but evidently, the ones that Lovin' Man took a look at weren't up to par 'cause he didn't mention it when I got home and I DIDN'T remind him!

Y'all, we didn't go on a hike. I hurt my back about a week ago and dang it, I haven't gotten over it. Just doing normal things hurts it. I've taken pain pills, muscles relaxers and now I'm down to the the Ibuprofen, which I just did a little test turn on it and it seems to be helping. We did go back to that train tunnel again (Cherry, I wanted to call you and let you know!). We have discovered that we can drive the truck almost all the way to it. There is a beautiful little creek back there and I was determined to follow it, but when we came to it, there was a copperhead sitting in the middle of it just as happy as you please. Thank God that I insisted that Lovin' Man bring the gun! I got a photo before he blew its head off, but didn't get an action photo because I had to hold the dog since the girls ran away like GIRLS! I hate copperheads! They are evil, good-for-nothing creatures with a temper, so he deserved it!

Hey, a gardening guy at Wal-mart talked me into trying to grow a tomato plant upside down. Oops, I forgot to download the photos. And yesterday, when I had like 5 minutes between all of the computer hogs I wrote about Pepper Place for you, Kris, and then I realized that I hadn't signed in and I lost everything and didn't have time or the fortitude to do it again at that moment. So I will do that later!

We are going to go to church and then up to the lake. I hope that my back doesn't prevent me from skiing. I love it so much! Hopefully, Oakley can video me doing it and having an awesomely funny blow out and I'll post it on Youtube to share with y'all. Ha! We have a great one of Lovin' Man crashing on a wakeboard, but he doesn't find it as amusing as we do.

Heavens! We got to stay on top of this little post of ours, don't we, or else we all get away from one another!

Happy, happy birthday, Kris! Goodness, I laughed when I read about your umbrella hat! Ya'll've given me a wonderful new memory of those hats to replace the one I had of that obnoxious woman at the race! And I am drooling over your mama's box of pretties! My mimmie had a ton of costume jewelry from the 20's-50's that went to a yard sale after Mama had to put her in a nursing home. I was just a teenager at the time and didn't realize what a treasure it was or I'd have kept it all. All-in-all, it sounds like you had a fabulous day! One of those that at the end of, you can put up your feet and declare it a good one! I hope you get those babies sold. I sure wish I could be one of your buyers. But then after reading of your and Alee's adventures with those babies, I don't know if I have the time they truly deserve!

Alee, you sure have your hands full with little Nora-girl! She's a busy bee, isn't she? Don't you love how she's already thinking for herself? Already figuring out how she can do things? I've always said that there is no one on this planet who can bring me to tears of frustration faster than Lauren! OR make my heart smile wider, either! Sometimes you just have to marvel at how truly smart they are!

Nikki, I'm so sorry about your back. That nagging, can't-get-comfortable pain is the absolute worse! Is that how yours feels? I hope it doesn't keep you from skiing today. It's going to be a beautiful day! I'll be spending it at subdivision duty. Maybe all the buyers won't be at the lake or the beach!

And I HATE copperheads, too! I'd so much rather run up on a rattler than a copperhead. At least the rattler lets you know he's there!

Yesterday was an interesting day with La, having so much one-on-one time with her to talk. She's very disgusted with her friends. One of them got herself grounded this past Thursday for re-piercing her nose for the THIRD time when her daddy's told her repeatedly not to. Then another one got herself in trouble over MySpace. And the third one has a new boyfriend and thinks if she doesn't spend every available moment with him, she'll cease to exist! Poor, La. She's so upset with all of them. Lauren seems to think things through alot more than these friend-girls of hers. She can't understand why'd they do a thing, knowing they'll get in trouble for it. All of her friend-boys were at the track all day Saturday and didn't feel like doing anything. So once her money was counted, La took herself to town to buy a pair of shoes, all by herself.

Did ya'll catch that? She drove herself to the mall!! Just decided that she'd have to drive again eventually and it may as well be now! (Of course, she really wanted those shoes, too.) Brian offered to ride with her if she'd just let him get a shower (saved me from having to fool with logs), but she said she wanted to do it by herself. Ya'll, I was a nervous wreck. She may have been ready, but I wasn't! But who was I to keep her from taking on this scary business? She needed to prove this thing to herself and had no time for me to get myself prepared for it. Brian was cleaning his stuff out of his truck for her and I just sat on my bed and prayed and prayed and prayed! Oh, I was so nervous and scared, more so than the very first time she ever drove! She checked in with us, letting us know when she left one place and had arrived at another. She left Trussville after she bought her shoes and then went to vist one friend, then another, then another. God heard my prayer too. I was able to fall asleep, thinking all night I wouldn't be able to until she'd walked back through the front door. The dogs woke me up, barking when she pulled up in the drive. I fell back asleep smiling. God not only kept my baby girl safe, He gave me peace enough to sleep.

Wow, Cherry! I am so glad that Lauren decided she was ready to drive again! YAY! *hugs* It's an important step in the healing process I think.

Well Nora only made a huge mess in the entry way while I was doing chores- manageable. So that's good. Now I am going to go up and change horses around. I am glad today is a rest day. I need to catch up on some housework!

Oh Alee. I got some kifir grains from a friend today!! I am so exited! She gave me enuf for a quart. I already strained it and have a qt. sitting on the counter. The stuff she gave me sat out 3 days before I could get it. It's very sour. So the guy that came to get milk and his kefir said the longer it sits out the tarter it will be. So I'll check after 24 hours and taste it. I hope I don't mess it up.

So I sold a baby goat boy today! Yeah! Only 7 more to go. I have had lots of company today. The goat buying people and then the milk buying family. It was so cute when they got here. Bubba, my lab, jumped right in the back as soon a they opened the door! Right on the boy. He was ok with it and it was cute, but he is so big. Then they opened the other side of the van and he could have just flown out the other side but he backed out. So it was a couple with their son and daughter. She is 7, coryn's age. So the girls all took off to jump on the trampoline and the boy came with us to see all the critters. He wants a goat now. They actually are going to talk about getting one some day. Anyway, they all came in to my little kitchen to get their milk and taste some. There were 9 people in my kitchen all at once! It was a mad house in here. But fun. I love company, especially un-family company. So I sold a goat and a gallon of milk today! And they want to start getting milk on Tuesdays now. Times like this I feel like I am really doing something good here. Making a real difference in this world with something so good.

Alee, I was going to say that Nora will probably get right back in with the goats and horses but after Kansas got butted by Faith she is a bit more cautious now. Nothing like a little pain to remind them. And when I have the grandkids by myself at chore and milking times they come with me. It makes more work but I don't trust them.

Nikki, I hope you had a great day and were able to ski. I know what the back pain feels like, girl. It's no fun at all. I haven't gotten to the point of pain pills yet, but I think that might happen one day. It feels like maybe a bulging disk or something like that. And I always manage to be walking along and the ground shifts to a different height and I go down a few inches and ow! that hurts like heck.

Cherry, I am so glad you had the peace you needed to let her go. I think she will be so much more cautious now.

Alee, how much milk are you getting from the goats? Are there 6 of them? I'll have 7 soon so I need to know about how much I'll be getting. I hope you get it all done.

And Monday is hay day for sure. It's supposed to be near 90 too. It's always that way when we get hay. We just bring plenty of water and get er done. My hubby will be here, too. I told him what we would be doing tomorrow and he said he had to leave out right after his doctor appointment. I said no you don't, you'll be driving the truck at least. I was going to put Chloe driving the truck but since he's here, he can. Or Heather. She's a wimp. Can't hardly pick up her kids. I know she won't be able to pick up a bale of hay. Last year I had the whole family getting hay, even my mom was here then. The SIL started driving a truck cross country so he won't be here this time. He's a great help. Anyway, another big day.

Hey Kris- Did you mention you have a milking machine? My hands are very envious! My hands ACHE! Well lets see- we are only milking once a day right now- I am going to start the second milking tonight I think. Right now I am getting about 2 gallons per milking session. These goats are Ober-Hasli so I am not sure how different they are at producing in comparason.

Nora goes with me to do the feeding/Watering chores and even changing some of the horses from inside to outside, but not milking. The goats are way to pushy (I don't blame them! I remember what being engorged felt like!) and I am afraid they would trample her. Then they like to be bad and go for the grass outside their pen after being milked.

Glad you sold a boy goat! You sure have a lot of them! Have fun with Haying- those are exhausting days!

Nora and I took a nap today- it was so great. Nora is still asleep and I am going to get back to cleaning the kitchen soon. :D
