Alee, I really, really hope she drops that foal today for you!! Especially after having to get up and check on her so much last night. I know it's exciting, but that'll wear on you after a while and sounds like you're gonna need all the zzzzz's you can get. And you want Nora wide-awake for that new little baby! How exciting! A new baby!!

Well, it's 12:15 and the rain has just now stopped for the time being and the sun is shining! Yoo-whoo!! But the weatherman is on and telling us that's not over yet for today. Gonna rain off and on until Thursday night. And it's already starting to flood in town. Then, dare we hope, four days of sunshine and low 80's!!!! Wonderful!! I went to get La and there was a mallard couple on the practice field at the school!

Still no foal. I went up to the barn and brushed my filly and re-braided her mane. She is looking so good! I let her graze for a while on the lawn, but not too long since she isn't a pasture horse. I don't think this grass has so much sugar in it that she would founder, but I don't want to make that mistake.

So we are still waiting to see whether we will have a little boy or girl! I am so excited.

Nora is loving playing with the goats and baby puppies. She comes in grubby every day. This morning she was carrying around one of the barn cats around. I am so surprised she didn't get scratched! Oh and then she found some dirt where the chickens have been dirt bathing so she thought that was pretty great.

I just got back home and came through downpours the whole way. But it's clear here. And sunny. Went to the garden to check on things and the beans are coming up but still don't see corn in either garden yet. I need to plant some more squash and zuc soon, too.

With all this rain I hope the hay farmers can mow it and get it bailed soon. I am slap out of hay. Already had to buy some from the feed store and it is crappy hay. Some people got some hay done last week. I am getting a little nervous. I really need some hay bad. I just hate to have to get a round bale when I know they'll be squares soon.

Nikki, I was born in Calif. and my mom was from Ga. She met my dad there and had all us kids in Calif. When they divorced we loaded up and mmoved to Ga. I can't tell you how many trips we made moving cross country when I was a kid. The last trip was when I was about 16, my brother 17 ans my sister was just 11. We left Calif. in my brothers VW van and were going to go to Yosimite before going to Ga. The van broke down there and we had to go back to trade in the van. My brother got a VW beetle. Cool shiny black one with big ole tires. So all 3 of us plus my dog Ziggy and all we owned stuffed into this Vw all the way to Ga. We had a pretty good time, but did get on each others nerves a little. Very memorable trip, that one. And there have been a few more since then. We loved going through Texas. It took forever and there was a road that was about 20 miles long that was like a roller coaster, up and down really close together and mom would get going really fast and our tummys would roll. It was so fun. Oh, the memories!

I love the purple flower. I was going to say it's a passion flower but now I'm not sure. And the white one in the very first picture looks like a wild hydrangea. That's what I call them. Beautiful pictures. And the best one is Oakley's. oh, the one with the big leaves looks alittle like a rhodedendron, but maybe not.

Alle, sounds like you have your hands full out there. Nora sounds like my grands. They go straight out to the chicken yard in search of bugs and worms and come out looking like they've been in the chicken yard. I love it. But be sure and wash her little hands good. Chicken poop isn't good.

I forgot to say I went out to feed chickens this morning and one of the Barred rock chicks that I got with the Buffs was dead. I have no idea why. It's too sad. The rest are ok.

Hi Kris- yes she is getting a bath twice a day right now and lots of hand washing. She is such a Pig Pen! LOL She helped me give the pregnant mare a bath and then helped "lead" her out to graze for a while. We are still waiting for that magic moment!

Do y'all know how awesome y'all are? Everyday my horizon is expanded by knowing y'all and learning from y'all.

I am on the edge of my seat expecting a foal because of you, Alee!

I am hoping that some day soon I will get a chance to milk a goat, Kris!

I am wondering what the man-shaped roots of a wild ginseng look like and hope I will get to photograph it, Cherry! LOL!

Oh, Kris, I am sorry that one of your baby chicks died. I hope that it wasn't sick with something that would hurt the other ones.

So cool about you trekking across the country in a VW bug! What an adventure!

Are squares bales better than the round kind? Is it because they are fresher or because they are easier to handle?

That may have been a rhododendron. I don't actually know what they look like. It was at least a 20 foot tall tree. The leaves were so big and so odd. For some reason I thought that it was some sort of magnolia, but it did look tropical and out of place. I hope it isn't some sort of drug crop that bad people planted and we stumbled across. Ha!

Cherry, do y'all have a four-wheeler? Maybe y'all could come with us the next time we go out to those tunnels. Lovin' Man wants to see the Coosa Tunnel. But he never plans ahead for these sorts of things. It is just like, "Well, I'm bored. Let's go out and find that train tunnel." And we either say no and he has to satisfy himself by spraying poison around the house or we say yes and have an adventure.

Yeah, Oakley tried to pick that sensitive brier and it poked her. I didn't want her picking any flowers anyway. I just want to collect things by photographing them and leave the plants alone.

I know what you mean, Cherry, about all the medicine you need growing around you. I have been trying to identify all of the flowers that I have been photographing lately and in the books there are all kinds of remedies associated with them. Not that I WANT to make my own medicine but it would be good to know.

You going out on the mountain and searching for ginseng reminds me of the book "Where the Lilies Bloom". Have y'all ever read it? The book is awesome but the movie is just as good. It is about a family of wild crafting mountain kids trying to stay together after their father dies. My dad read it to us and he did all of the voices. I loved how he made Mary Call's voice so shrill and irritable. Anyway, they make money by collecting all of the herbs and roots on the mountain that are valuable for medicine. Neat way to make a living. I'm sure it isn't allowed anymore, though.

Hope you have a great time catching up with La. Heaven knows that she won't be sunburned. HA!

Right back atcha, Nikki-girl! You've expanded my horizons, as well! And I really, truly enjoy your sense of humor!

Sooooo.....maybe that was a rhododendron, but I thought they looked more like azaleas. But the little "pod, flower" thing in the center does look like a magnolia. Now we have a quest! A challenge! Identify that possible rhododendron, possible magnolia, possible drug plant! :)

And, oh, don't get me started on bad people and their drug crops! It is not unusual for the drug helicopter to fly really, really low over our hollow and around the neighboring properties! I'm constantly nagging Brian to walk our property lines to make sure no one has snuck on here to plant anything. But with 39 acres, it's not something he jumps to do. Our property borders paper company land and management area land, so people are always stumbling on it, especially during deer and turkey seasons. We've had to run off several drunk teen-agers who "happened" upon our place looking for one particular neighbor (and I use the term "neighbor" very loosely)! Granddaddy was a contracted deputy with Jefferson county because, being a crop-duster, he could fly low enough to spot large plots of marijuana and they'd use him to make big busts. I remember him having whole leaves pressed in the pages of encyclopedias so he could "educate" us about it. He eventually had to crumble them up and flush them after two of my cousins hatched a plan to steal them. They couldn't remember which letter of the alphabet he had them "filed" under and got caught with them stacked all around them, shaking out the pages! Sadly, they're the same two cousins who would steal TT's morphine when his cancer was so bad and he was in so much pain. One of them also tried to get him to smoke a joint with her when his pain was the worst! Can you imagine? She hit him up for the money to buy it, too. Stupid girl! I can't even wrap my brain around that. I CAN imagine the look of disappointment he probably gave her though!

The four-wheelers come and go around here. We've had one of every size for La, had the huge hunting ones, and even a racing-quad. But not at the moment. At the moment we have Brian's dirtbike and a huge wave-runner. But that's subject to change on a whim! So, sadly, no, no four-wheeler. We used to do that, though. Just take off on the four-wheeler with no destination in mind and a prayer that we wouldn't get shot at trespassing on someone's land. The best adventure was when we went to Chimney Rock. Amazing!

Funny you mentioned Lovin' Man spraying poison. Brian and I had a "discussion" today over his favorite ant killer. The stinky stuff. He was swearing up and down how it works and I was telling him he has blinders on because the ants just move a few feet away and rebuild their home and then he told me that he cuts the grass and therefore is more aware of the antbeds in our yard and then I was telling him how I'm playing in my flowerbeds at least every few days and I, too, am aware of the antbeds.....

...sorry. So, when Brian gets bored he usually goes to his shop and welds two pieces of metal together. Sometimes he ends up with a bushhog. Or a trailer. Or, more recently, a dune buggy frame. Whatever it may be, at least he's occupied!

I'm constantly researching stuff, too. When passion flowers starting sprouting up all over the yard, I read everything I could find on them. One interesting thing I learned, you can dry the leaves and smoke them to treat insomnia and dream "vivid" dreams. My friend-girl and I made a lot of jokes over that one! She said that I wanted a stay-at-home job and this was perfect! I could become a passion flower dealer! And the drug helicopters would just think I had a lot of pretty, purple flowers everywhere!

And now I have to read this book! I'm reading Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver right now and am devouring all the factual info in it. Coyotes are themed in it and I'm truly receiving an eye-opener about them. Do you have a problem with coyotes, Kris, with your kids and chickens? That's one of Brian's arguments about me not having either because my heart wouldn't be able to take it if I lost them to coyotes. But I'm learning things I never knew about them before, reading this book. I had to run to Springville to meet Brian, Nikki, and one ran across the prison road right in front of me in broad daylight! What a coincidence!

And I picked La up and came home, we talked for a little while, she gave me a fabulous leather bracelet she bought me, I fed her soup and grilled cheese, and then she took a three hour nap! But sunburn, nah! She has Brian's dark coloring and may get a bit pink, but is brown as a nut the next day whereas I am the fair complexioned one who will get fried to a crisp if I'm not careful! The only thing on Brian's body I've ever seen sunburned is...

... the tops of his feet! (Hee! Hee! Did I get ya?)

Anyway, back to La. Her cut is healing fantastically!!!! Brian didn't even notice it when he got home, it looks so much better! I'm so happy for her about it, too. She was really self-conscious of it.

Kris, I'm sad about your little chick, too. I have a friend-girl who had five who were a few weeks old and all died within a couple of hours on Easter Sunday. She never did learn what happened to them. Was this one of the babies living in your laundry room? I sure do hope you don't lose any more.

And, OMG, I can't begin to imagine driving from CA to GA with my sister and brother at that age! I surely would have kicked my sister out of the car before reaching Nevada! My siblings and I are about the same age difference between you and yours. I'm the eldest, Sharon is 18 mos younger, and Bryan is 7 years younger.

I am so dismayed at my tomatoes, ya'll. The soapy water didn't quite do the trick. I used Joy dishwashing liquid and am wondering if I should have used something different. What, I can't begin to guess. The leaves that were literally covered in aphids I, of course, sprayed more. And today they have black/brown mottling on them. And every last one of my baby tomatoes is splitting. I took Brian out there to show him and he, quite expectedly, Nikki, told me I should have stuck with the Sevin dust. Aggravating man!! But he also told me that they are splitting because of too much rain and that I needed to put plastic down around the plants so the rainwater will run off away from the base of the plant. What say you, Kris, about that? He's probably right, huh? Dratted man!!

Alee, do we have a baby foal yet? I can't imagine your expectation and excitement when I've been on here pretty much every hour on the hour to look for an update from you!

Nikki, no difference in square or round except the shape! And I have no place to put the round bales. So I get square. And it's raining again!

Cherry, I got that book at a thrift store a few months back. I am reading it off and on. It is interesting. And it's huge.

I do not know about your poor tomatoes. Just do what the hubby says and see if that works. I have not had that problem here. I have very clay soil and yours is sandy. So I am not sure at all. But the soapy water should not harm the plants. Do you have a nursury near you that you could ask? I am not an expert gardener and I need help alot, too. I hope ya'll don't think I know it all. There are so many things that just have never sunk in and I am still learning it all, too. So we can learn together.

Alee, what kind of horse is she?

It's another rainy day.

Hi Cherry,
We spray our plants with bug a mixture of onion powder, garlic power and a little soap to make it stick to the plants. Make sure you spray the top and bottom of the leaves. I hope that helps.

Tina, do the bugs just not like the smell and it repels them off the plants or does it actually kill them? That sounds like a good natural remedy and easy, too. I'm all for easy.

CHERRY, you are so funny! I am laughing and laughing about your cousins sitting there with all of the encyclopedia's looking for weed. And, you, the passion flower dealer! Wow, drugs make people do weird things. Thank God, everyone I know and love lived through that stage.

Yep, I'm the same burn and peel, burn and peel, while everyone around me turns a toasty, gingerbread brown. Truly not fair. Last year I went to the tanning bed three times a week until we went to the beach and I actually had color, even my fingers! I liked it, but I am so freaked out about skin cancer. My aunt, who used to frequent the tanning bed had to get a spot cut off the end of her nose and my dad had a couple of chunks taken off his ear, so I fear that I can't dodge that bullet.

I am so glad that La is healing so quickly! Going to the beach probably sped the process. What kind of plans has she got for the summer. Is she going to help in the garden? - That is crappy about your tomato plants. I hope that Tina's suggestion will help with the aphids. I haven't seen any bugs on mine, but maybe they come out when I am not looking because there are little holes through a few of the leaves. I guess you should try the plastic like Brian suggested. You know he is right, why fight it?

Yeah, I am glad that Lovin' Man knows so much, that's why I love him, but dang it, why can't I be right once in a while. I want to know just a few things that he doesn't. COME ON! (as Andy from The Office would say)

Oh, Kris, no. I'm sorry, girl, but you are WAY ahead of me on the gardening and farming front. As far as I am concerned you are right up there with Barbara Kingsolver. I have some tomato plants that I take a photo of every several days and you are making your own cheese. Un-uh. No way are we on the same level. You are on the pinnacle, baby! But if you want to pretend that you are learning with us, go ahead. LOL!

Alee! Do we get blue bubble gun cigars or pink?

Peas, beans and corn are all up now!! All this rain and now sun has brought them all to the surface. You should see my crooked rows. They really look crooked now with everything showing. But I like crooked so it doen't bother me. It makes it more interesting to look at instead of nice neat orderly stright rows. And I think I can get more in a row when they're crooked, too. Anyway, it looks good out there.

And I don't know what happened to my killdeer family. I went out this morning and saw the parents flying around way up. I checked and the eggs were all still there. I hope everything is ok. They are still not on the nest.

Cherry, I would have probably done the same thing as your cousins way back when. If it was around it wouldn't be for long. But I would never have taken his meds.

My mom just had some skin cancer and had to use the chemo cream on her nose. So I guess I need to use sun screen but I always forget it. And when I remember I'm already done and back inside. I do wear a hat though.

Tina, that is hilarious! Maybe I should try that, too! I love squash, too. Anything new is so cute. I can't wait to get stuff. Mine is getting big but no flowers yet.

That's ok, Alee. I know you've been busy there on the ranch. I will go look at the horses.

Alee, what a gorgeous horse! And the scenery in the background is beautiful, too. If that's where you are this week, then WOW! I know that you are having an awesome time! - Oops, and I meant bubble gum cigars. HA!

Kris, you and the crooked rows! Bet you are right about fitting more in. - And about those "leaves" in the encyclopedia. Funny!

Tina, so glad that you are getting baby squash! They are so tender and cute. Lovin' Man used to wear a yellow shirt that made him look so yummy, so I can attest to the goodness factor of yellow on men. HA! Oh, that reminds me. Our kayaks are yellow and I was looking up things about dealing with sharks and alligators. Well, researchers actually call the color of our kayaks "yum-yum-yellow" because that's usually the color that sees some action. They couldn't say if is was because of the color or that there is a higher number of yellow kayaks out there. But STILL.

Cherry, I think that I am going to go to Pepper Place this Saturday! Don't know if Oakley will come with me or not. She is beginning to cherish her morning sleep more and more.

I have four raised beds of tomatoes and in two of them the plants seem to be growing well, but no blooms. In the other two the plants seem stunted and aren't growing noticeably at all. I told Lovin' Man that I might just yank the runty ones outta there and put something else in. Surprisingly, he was all for leaving them in. Said to give them a chance since they haven't seen enough sun. Now I'm going to wait it out a little longer. We'll see.

Pull out the blue bubble gum Cigars! We have a colt!

Nikki- Yes that is only one of many of the great views at this ranch. It truly is gorgeous. That picture of Binty was her as a three year old I think. She is more mature now and still very beautiful. Of course right now she is about as big as a house... It will be a while before she looks trim again after this foal. He is gigantic!

We have a beautiful red bay born! He is a bit mousey around the muzzel and eyes so he might go grey. He is huge! We will try and estimate his weight a bit better tomorrow, but he is the biggest foal that the ranch manager has seen! I accidently forgot to set my alarm the last time, but woke up anyway. I could see the mare laying down and moving around a bit, wringing her neck and reaching back to bite at there ribs. I thought I saw a foot protruding and ran to wake up Bryony the ranch manager. I grabbed a bucket of hot water and added iodine. She grabbed the foaling kit and the foaling towels. We got up there and applied gentle traction to his foreglegs. His muzzle soon came out but he got stuck at the forehead. We both pulled during her contractions and after the head, he slipped right out. We used the hemostats to clamp the umbilical cord, and in horses the umbilical cord usually will break a certain distance from the body. We did run into a little problem as the umbilical cord started gushing blood on the mare side of the hemostat. It wouldn't abate so we called the vet just to make sure. While we were waiting for the vet to call back I told Bryony that I thought we should move the hemostats a bit closer to the mare. At this point the foal's umbilical had broken properly so I as just thinking of using the hemostats as a tourniqite. It worked and the vet said that was the right thing to do.

It took the mare about 45 minutes to pass the placenta during most of the time we kept the foal on the ground doing imprinting work. We rubbed the foal down, played with his hooves, ears, eyes and nose to get him used to this type of handling. He got to his feet after some very funny false starts. And it didn't take him too long to start nursing. All together delivery to nursing was about 2 hours!

The foal doesn't have a name yet- it will be a while before he does. Sometimes a year or more! I am not sure how many pounds he is but he is big! Probably about 110 to 120 pounds. He is tall. He is probably 3.5 feet at the whithers. He comes up to my rib cage already!

Nikki, I think I'd paint the kayak a different color. Maybe muddy brown! Or gray. And I hope your tomato plants start growing soon. I think if the sun comes out for more than a day they may make it. I wish you'd take pics of this Pepper Place and show them here. It sounds like a cool place.

That is a beautiful horse, Alee. I used to always want a black stallion when I was a kid. But I would not now as much as I know about stallions. So maybe a black gelding about 20 years old. I love horses but after I was bucked off mine I have not been back on. The fear of really getting hurt as old as I am keeps me off them. It's too high up and too far to fall for me. I'm glad he's here and it's all over. Are there more mares due?

Kris

Yay, yay, yay, a precious baby colt!!!!! Oh, Alee, how very exciting for you! Has Nora seen him yet? What an experience! I'm so happy you didn't miss it. He's definitely going to be a handsome boy with such a gorgeous mama! And Nikki's right, that is a beautiful location to be stuck "workin'" in!

Tina, thank you so much for the "recipe" for those pesky bugs! Do you some water to it to make it spray better? I'm definitely gonna try it. IF it ever stops raining. The weatherman's calling for near 90's this week-end and the beginning of the week next week. If I have to give up these cool temps for some sunshine, I'll do it and do it with a glad heart! And I have baby squash, too! I actually was able to harvest two yesterday. I made up a salad for supper last night with buttercrunch lettuce, red leaf lettuce, squash, broccoli, and tomato. The only thing not from my little garden was the tomato! It was sooooooo good! I don't know if it was a mind-thing or what, but it just tasted so much better to me having come from my little patch of earth!

Alas, Nikki, Lovin' Man seems to be right again. Everything needs some more sun around here! I think once the ground has a chance to dry out, the tomatoes will do so very much better. I was thinking about the tomato farmers up in Oneonta and wondering how they're doing and then thought that them being way up on the top of that mountain has to help because the wind's constantly blowing. That should help dry out the ground.

And I was at an agent's open house yesterday, talking to a veteran gardener, and he said that we really have had too much rain and that we might need to replant some things. He said if it's something that's just come up, it'll do great with our sunshine and high temps next week. He said he ususally plants in "waves", staggering the time between plantings, which in turn, staggers the time between harvesting.

Kris, Nikki is right (yay!) about you and your farming expertise! I heartily second her! I bet you get asked a lot of questions at Farmer's Market and have an answer for every single one of them! And I think crooked rows give a garden character!

I wish I could go to Pepperplace Saturday, too, Nikki. Only I'll be having a yard sale with La. She wants to earn some money so she won't have to be asking her daddy for it. Sweet girl! Of course, there's a ton of stuff piled up on my kitchen table, waiting to be priced, and she spent the night at a friend's house last night so I'm left to get that done today! Smart girl! I think the pricing of stuff is the worst part of having a yard sale. That and dealing with whatever's left! One of these Saturday's I'm gonna make it down there though!

Alee, I just can't quit smiling over that baby and how you were fortunate to witness his birth!

Oh, yeah, Nikki, I'd be taking some Krylon to that kayak and painting it something really drab and unappetizing looking!
