I just made laundry soap for the first time about three weeks ago and the ladies here on MJF helped me so much. Here's what I used:
One 4 lb box of Washing Soda
One 4 lb box of Baking Soda
One 4 lb box of Borax
3 bars of Fels Napa bar soap. (I grated this soap using my really old food processor-very easy)
Mixed everything up together in a small 3 gal. plastic Rubbermaid tote and I use about 2-3 T. for each large laundry load. This took less than 10 minutes to mix. I really love this soap, my clothes are much softer, and I'll never go back to store bought. The cost was about $10 for everything.
I'm still working on trying my own bread without the machine.

That is the exact same recipe I use. The only problem I have is with grease stains. I still need to put a stain remover on the grease stains.
Otherwise I love it. I use 1/2 vinegar also in the rinse cycle.
And now I have a CLOTHESLINE!!!

Gena, I use orange hand cleaner and pre-treat clothes with that! It seems to work well on my son's and hubby's clothes! I put some om a small scrub brush and scrub the stain a bit before I wash it!

A can of Coke in the wash cycle also removes oil and grease stains. I used this when my late hubby worked the oil fields and when I was vehicle mechanic in the Army. It worked great.

The washing soda is a powder and I believe it's made by Arm & Hammer. This recipe makes powder laundry soap similar to Cheer but much finer in texture and way better. Good luck

We make our own detergent as well and we love it. We do a liquid version but its basically the same ingredients. We buy our Arm and Hammer washing soda at the supermarket, but I've only been able to find it at Kroger.

Hi Tina!
this is the recipe that I use,it was originally printed in Countryside & Small Stock Journal,sent in by Doris Baty,this makes a liquid laundry soap,I save my vinegar bottles to keep it in and have experimented with different essential oils for fragrance but I think lavender is the nicest and most agreeable,my Husband really doesn't want to smell like roses apparently!
Ingredients:
1/3 bar Fels Naptha
1/2 cup washing soda (not baking soda)
1/2 cup of borax powder
1 tablespoon essential oil (optional)
2-gallon jugs
Grate the soap and put it in a large saucepan with 6 cups of water over medium heat,heat until the soap melts,add washing soda,borax and essential oil(if desired),stirring constantly until dissolved.
Let it set for five minutes over the heat stirring occasionally then remove from heat and let set for another five minutes.
Using a funnel,put half the mixture in each gallon jug,fill each jug halfway with hot water and shake well,continue to fill the jug with hot water to the top,shake agin and then put aside for about 24 hours,this jels up and looks like egg whites.
Use 1/2 to 1/3 cup per load,this will not suds up like most commercial detergents but works just as well,you can also add 1/2 cup vinegar per load to soften and further deodorize.

The recipe I use is basically the same as the powdered version most of you have posted. I usually make a triple batch at a time..with 6 of us (all 12 and older) we go through alot of it. It does go a long way though! I used to do the gel/liquid version but I much prefer the powdered. Just be sure to grate your fels naptha or other soap really fine..like a powder! I use a parmesan cheese grater to do mine. The gel was a little too much like dipping into a bucket of snot. ick. But it does work well.

Yes you can make your own bread without a bread maker  I've done it for years now. It works for me because I make 6-12 loaves at a time so it would take me longer with the bread machine. Do you want my recipe and instructions? |

Oh, I forgot to answer about bread too. I have never owned a bread machine. I would have to have it running all the time with my family..haha! I make a recipe that does 3 loaves at a time. You could go to the kitchen section of this forum and search for bread and I bet there are some good recipes there..meanwhile, Crystal..I would sure love to see your recipe too!
