So I just tried a natural deodorant for the first time. I've been using it all week. It the deodorant stick by Desert Essence with tea tree oil and lavender oil. It smells great...like tea tree oil and it seems to be working REALLY well. No gross B.O. smell, even when working out. The tea tree natural antiseptic kills the odor bacteria in the arm pit.

The other day though, I noticed that my armpits itched really bad. I looked at them in the mirror and they are all red and inflamed looking, with welt-type things. I didn't use it today and went back to my regular, non-natural deodorant. It is soooo itchy today!!

I can't go to the doc because I don't have medical insurance to see if I'm allergic. I really want to switch to a natural deodorant that has a scent. I mean, the salt stone looks nice I guess, but I want a nice scent in my deodorant. Does any one have any suggestions?

The deodorant with the tea tree oil I got even said it was good for sensitive skin.

:)

I really want to switch all my products to natural. Thanks!!

Did you use it right after shaving? I have heard that can cause some irritation. If not I would stop using it until you could seek the opinion of a professional. I would also email the company to see if they have any ideas as to why you would be having this experience. CustomerCare@DesertEssence.com

I had the exact same problem, but I did stink. It was gross. Finding a natural deodrant is hard, many of them are expensive, and many of them don't work. I went back to my regular deo/antiperspirant (the rash from the crystal roll-on went away after a coupe of days) only I use a tiny amount and I apply it with my fingers.
The Desert Essence brand doesn't do well with me, even the blemish stick made me red and blotchy even though it said for sensitive skin. It must be the tea tree oil.

A girlfriend of mine recommended the "Pit Putty" (I know..."iffy" name) from Bubble & Bee. I ordered some a couple of days ago, and I'll let you know how it works. If you want to check it out - here's their website: http://www.bubbleandbee.com/servlet/the-111/Geranium-Lime-'Pit-Putty/Detail .

OK gals.. I have posted this a few times, but just use baking soda. I put a little bit in my palms & gently pat into pits after my shower while they are still slightly damp. (don't rub too hard, as you may get irritated) It has worked better than anything & I am a sweater. I have also noticed that I have no pit stains in my white shirts anymore.
Of course if I fork out the goat barn or spend a night having hot flashes, I may get funky, but not any more than any other product.
I, too had tried ALL of the natural products & they just left me with good old BO!!
It is cheap, easy & natural. Try it..You'll Like It!

I use the crystal that looks like a piece of quartz and it works great, no rashes and I'm pretty sensitive to wierd stuff. You get it at health food stores. Any deoderant with aluminum is BAD. See:

Toms of Maine makes a crystal one too. I like the baking soda idea, too. I like having an organic lavendar spray inmy bad and give a spritznowandthen especially if I get hot under the collar.
I wish I had a goat barn to fork out!

Okay, the "Pit Putty" gets a big "thumbs-up" from me! The clove/lemon scent is wonderful - and they make it in a geranium/lime scent, too. I'm sold... It has arrowroot powder for dryness in it, along with coconut oil and essential oils. - just thought I'd report back!

Thanks so much for the update Libbie! I returned my Desert Essence deodorant to Whole Foods and exchanged it for a different one. I got Tom's of Maine 12 hour protection in the lavender scent as well as the Crystal mineral stone. I hope they work. If not, I think I may try the Pit Putty. We'll see how it goes... I am going to wait until my underarms return to normal before I start the new deodorant. They aren't as inflamed and puffy as before, but they are still a little itchy and still have redness. They look much better than they did though.

I think that you all are on the right track; I think tea tree oil, not necessarily the deodorant, is to blame. I am pretty sensitive to the stuff myself. I bought a bit once to put on acne, and I had a rash ON TOP of pimples!

I have used the stone in the past but for the past year I've used baking soda. I like it better than anything else. I use a powder puff to put it on.
