I don't know why I can't get more meals ready and into the freezer. Makes for a convenient supper that is good for my family.
Like tonight, I have cabbage rolls from the freezer baking in the oven. All I had to do was make the sauce. I have potatoes peeled waiting to boil and mash. Garlic green beans and homemade bread and butter will complete the menu.
Wish I could plan ahead more. Maybe one day I'll get more organized - maybe not.LOL I can plan and work from a weekly menu, but can't seem to plan for putting things in the freezer.

Have you seen the book called "Once a Month cooking?" it is wonderful...recipes and menus for up to a month at a time...I think 4 different plans. I have never done the whole month one, but have done 15 or so meals up for the freezer in one weekend..and it was awesome! I need to do that again..thanks for the reminder. And gosh..cabbage rolls sound so good!!

| I agree that having meals in the freezer is such a time-saver! Towards the end of my last pregnancy I made alot of things for the freezer: casseroles, enchiladas, lasagna, jambalaya, muffins, breads, cinnamon rolls, meatballs, bierocks...It was so much easier than trying to cook with a newborn and a two-year old underfoot! I am just now using up the last of everything that I made during that time. Like Christine thought, I am having a really hard time getting back into filling up my freezer. It is just alot more fun to empty it! |

Aunt Jenny, yes I've borrowed that book from the library and always thought about doing it. But, like you, I've only done about a dozen meals. That was years ago - before life got really really crazy.LOL
Toni, you are right - it easy more fun emptying the freezer than filling.
I really should get motivated and have a few meals tucked away before all the garden and yard work begin.
I'm stumped for tonight's meal. No plan - no inspiration. We attended a funeral today and the day got away from me.

One time I did make a bunch of meals for the freezer using that book and it was awesome. I think I did mostly ziti and pasta dishes, but once I got started, it was really quick and easy. What a relief to have food ready to cook on days I was tired from work!

I got together with 7 other woman last year for a swap. We all made 9 main dish items. One to eat the night you made it, one for the freezer and 7 to swap. We all brough ice chests and an appetizer to the hostesses house and swaped our main dishes. It was great. We stated an email thread to start with on anything people were allergic to or would not eat. Then everyone posted their recipe. It was nice because everyone had a great signature dish.
I need to do this again. It was nice to have 7 different items in the freezer.

Laura, that sounds like a fun swap. It would be nice to get a variety like that. Wish I had a group to do that with here. Could you tell us what dishes were made?
Melanie, I don't have the book. I borrowed it from the library. I checked on the internet and I believe the authors are Mimi Wilson and Mary Beth Lagerborg. I'm pretty sure that's the book I read.
I've also visited Recipe Zaar. There is a OAMC board and many recipes and tips. The recipes I've tried from there have been good.
Maybe we should start a thread for Farmgirls. We could share recipes and tips for make ahead and freezer meals. It would be helpful to list those recipes that were not keepers. It's neat to see how others prepare and plan the cooking days......I really need to do this.
