Do you all go out looking for the first wild asparagus of the season?
I think I might go for a walk with Nora and Sky today on a hunt for some! We may or may not be successful in finding some, but the hunt is the exciting part!
I have it on good authority that the backroads around here are full of asparagus! Great news for me! Hopefully it has been intrepid in growing even though we have had crummy weather the last week or so.
If you are a Asparagus hunter- when do you usually head out? Do you mark the spot and come back to it once it has grown a bit? Have you ever tried transplanting it to your yard?

WHen I was around 8-12 we lived in an old farm house and there was asparagus that was growing way in the back where someone, sometime must have had a garden. We never ate it as my parents just weren't into asparagus and I didn't even know what it was. Boy, I loved that place; there were huge rhubarb plants that were probably decades old, huge rose plants that were growing there for who knows how long.
I just found this post funny because last night I had a dream were asparagus was growing all over my garden and I was pulling it out and yelling to passerbys if they wanted some asparagus. Wonder what that dream meant?! lol
Good luck on your search. I don't have any tips but over at Confessions of a Pioneer Woman in the cooking section there is a good recipe for baked asparagus.

Hi Miss Wilma- It grows like crazy around here- especially in the ditch banks and canal banks. If it doesn't get harvested over the spring, then it produces seeds. The birds around here love it and they spread the seeds so it keeps spreading and spreading!

| Is it garden asparagus that's gone feral, or a native plant that resembles asparagus? Just curious, I'm with Miss Wilma - never heard of wild asparagus. |

It's the "garden" variety that is feral I guess you could say but it is more like the garden variety is just seeds that were harvested from a wild variety some time in the past!

Once you taste Wild Asparagus it's hard to have store bought!
Every year we do the Asparagus Hunt. For us it's usually around May until June/July. We find it around the ditch banks. We don't mark the spot but remember for the most part what area it is in.
Oh, we tried transplanting some to our yard last Summer and it looks like it has taken well.
We like to drizzle olive oil on it, add a little sea salt and grill it. Yum!

That's great Sharon! Yes, I love wild asparagus- or garden grown! The store bought stuff is not so great! We alway try to head out around Easter here and then we can see which ones are big enough for an early harvest and then let others grow a bit more.

I live in SW Colorado, so Mother's Day signals asparagus hunting! It grows along old fences and irrigation ditches here, My husband is used to pulling off the side of the road so I can jump out and pick a few stalks! It grows fast, so keep checking.
