My son is in the process of making me an herb garden, I have always wanted an herb garden. Would love any input and advise .Is there any special way to grow them. I growed about everything but just never really got started with herbs. Brian is making me a 10x20 boxed space with sections, I will have a picket fence around it and I have an old antique gate for the entrance.I would like plants that came back. today I bought parsley. sage. corriender, dill, marjorum, I plan to get some good black dirt from the woods

Good for you Wilma! My herb garden is 24X24 ft. I have my prenials around the outside edge. Like Rosemary, sage, thyme. On the inside raised beds, I plant the annuals like marjorum, basil, savory. Be sure and show us some pics on misswilmasplace.
And, I also plant salad stuff in the inside raised beds. |

Wilma, next weekend is the Mennonite sale here in Scottsville. They will have all kinds of herbs everything right down to Borage, chamomile and unusual herbs like that. Basil is a must have, lavender, thyme, sweet marjoram, rosemary, oregano and anything else you can imagine! I love herbs! I'll look tonight and see which kind are perennials in our area. And if you can't make it down here next weekend, I can pick you up some while I'm at the sale. (It will be a good excuse to come see you!) teeheehee! Tammy

Thanks Tammy, thats a go.We was needing a good excuse for you to come,Diana I am going to make small wooden signs on stakes. Lisa from Ohio is bringing me some starts to Burlington also. Any of you girls that like Lilies Janice has wonderful plants, All of mine are up from last year

Good for you, Miss Wilma and what a joy to have free labor!! Coriander and dill are annuals, and should both set seed at the end of the season so you will have volunteer plants the next year. Basil frequently does the same thing.
Good perennials that will come back year after year are Greek Oregano, Sage, Lavender, Fennel, Bee balm, Thyme, Mint. Rosemary will make a good little bush for you after a couple years' growth, and sorrel comes back each spring, too. It is sour and is a great ingredient in a soup recipe I have. You will have a BALL! Miss Wilma, how wonderful that you are getting a herb garden.
Yes, as Nancy said you need Greek oregano, thyme, you can get silver leafed thyme, regular, and lemon thyme, Lavender is so my favorite, I have 5 bushes, rosemary, mints( they spread like wild fire so you might want to put them in containers). Rosemary is so wonderful and fragrant. Oh get a Russian sage just for the silvery leaf color and beautiful blue flowers it has. I can't wait to see your herb garden!!!!! I wish you were closer cause I could give you oregano starts, sage, and thyme....nuts. But I am sure that Tammy will be helping you out plenty!!!!

Basil, thyme, chives and oregano are used quite often in my every day cooking, so I have them in my garden too. Enjoy your fresh herbs this summer! They are great when added close to the end of the cooking time. They are also wonderful chopped up together for a fresh salad. I just drizzle lemon juice on mine and it is delicious!

Miss Wilma you are so funny. This is my big project of the summer too. I am putting in a herb garden and I don't know what I am doing. I have rosemary and chives so far but not planted. I am going to sit down and draw a plan.

If you intend to plant mint make sure you isolate it. I buried tiles all around mine. MInt is agressive in growing and can take over an area if not confined. Have fun.

Nancy, you can definately plant them in an old washtub. Make sure there are drainage holes and just stick them suckers in there. Make sure they get lots of sunshime and water them often. Herbs don't like alot of fertilizer so I only fertilize mine once in the middle of summer. If you plant Basil make sure you pluck all the flowers off so the won't set seed. It will make your Basil bitter. And if you plant Cilantro it will bolt in the hot weather so I do succession plantings of that. Wilma, do you know what you want me to get for you Saturday? Also I have peppermint and spearmint if you need some. Just make sure to put it somewhere you don't mind it spreading out!

Oh Boy, I sure got the big eye on an herb garden.It is 12x20I thought I had bought several plants but they sure look little beside the garden.But I can keep adding to it. We have it ready to put the paling fence around it and get lots of dirt hauled in, Sterl thinks I will have all the top soil on the farm in it. Yesterday we spent the whole day playing out there.Sat I got mad at him because he was acting gooffy and didnt want to help me but yesterday he was just like a little puppy. Sometimes getting something out of my head into his head is almost impossible. Anyway he is really good to help me do things and I just have to be patient when he is really just wanting to go hunt dry land fish. Guess he thought if he didnt help me I wouldnt cook his dry land fish and I wouldnt have either.
