I found out the other day that my cousin's husband was shot and killed in Oakland, Calif. over the weekend. Mark Dunekin was the first officer to be shot and killed. I just talked to my Aunt who lives there and she told me a little more about it. He was her daughter's husband. They have 3 children, 15, 13 and 8. My cousin, Angela, was a police officer years ago and was shot and injured and her partner was killed. So she was well aware that something like this could happen any time. But this was such a senseless act of violence. My Aunt said they think the guy just wanted to be killed. But he had to take down 4 good men to get there. It's just too sad for words.

Please remember these young families. She said there will be a huge memorial Friday with a processional going through several towns picking up hundreds of police officers on the way. It will be a wonderful tribute to these fallen men.

This hit too close to home. My BIL is a police officer (in a town near Oakland) and was in somewhat the same senario, but thankfully he survived. I know he'll be at the Memorial services.
It's so sad, these men who tried to protect the innocent and keep the peace, and the families they've left behind...breaks my heart.

For the record, us Californians know that Oakland is the murder capitol of the US...even if it's not official. It's a bad, bad place.

Kristin, they are in my thoughts and prayers. What a terrible tragedy.

My oldest son will be graduating from the police academy next month. I am very proud of him and worried sick at the same time.

Kristin, they are definitely in my prayers. My husband served as a Chaplain for the Police Department. People tend to ignore the stresses and danger that these officers go through for our safety.

Thank you all. I know all these thoughts and prayers will be felt. Mark's parents are really having a hard time with this. I can not even imagine what they are going through right now.

I know I take these men and women for granted. Not even thinking what they must go through every day. Just a routine traffic stop isn't very routine these days. And that is what these guys were doing that day.

Dawn, you have a wonderful grandson to be doing what he's doing. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers, too.

Oh Kris -- my heart goes out to you & your family.

Our oldest was in the police academy last year, but he just couldn't make himself become combative during their exercises in stopping a crime in progress. He had all the grades, all the extra class work down, but he just could not make himself begin to fight with another person.

We truly do seem to ingnore how much we need our police dept's -- and when something like this senseless act occur, it just makes no sense.

You are being held in prayer.

Laurianne

I am so sorry that this hit you so close to home. This whole event happened less than ten minutes from my house, and the entire city has been up in arms ever since. This whole situation makes me so so sad. One guy took out four officers! It tears me apart to think about it. :(

Stephanie, you are right there. My other cousin, who is Angela's brother, is an officer in Oakland, too. I just don't understand why this happened. It is heartbreaking.

Laurianne, it's good that he went ahead and got out when he did. It just wasn't meant for him to do that, I guess. He knows what best for him.

The saddest thing is my uncle, Angela's dad, died almost exactly 5 years to the day that Mark was killed.

So sad for all. Suicide by cop is growing. I am glad we have police but sad that we need them. My prayers go to all the police and their families.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.
