I am trying to steer clear of store-bought pre-packaged goodies for the kids for afterschool/afternoon snacks. I'm looking for ideas beyond bowls of popcorn or ice cream or cheese/crackers. Anyone have ideas to pass on to me?
Thank you!
Emily

Fruit, cut up with something dippable like organic peanut butter or yogurt. Charlie also like pretzels this way. Golden raisins are a big hit too. Miniture "pizzas" on ritz crackers or any type of healthy cracker.

Frozen yogurt. Gogurt has one that I freeze and they eat like a popsicle. Fruit juice pops.

cracker with peanut butter... yum!
Muffins are an all day fave here as well. I also have a fat-free granola bar recipe I could send if you like.

I keep a veggie tray ready for them. (dip too) As well as a wide variety of fruit to snack on. They like to have sliced apples with caramel. Yummy!

Besides everybody else's ideas...
Yogurt. Banana bread. Zucchini bread. Pretty much any fruit in the house is fair game - fresh or canned. Jerky. Homemade herby crackers? I've been known to make fresh biscuits and throw some (homemade strawberry) jam on them as well....

Tracy, I would love to have the fat-free granola recipe. I'm always on the lookout for one.
Great topic, Emily! I need ideas, too. :) I'm sorry I can't add anything new to the list. Oh, except for red pepper strips. Those are nice and juicy and an acceptable color (to my little one, at least).

I keep washed, cut up fruit on the bottom shelf of the frige. Nora is learning to open it herself to get in there.
I also liked as a kid, rice cakes with a little butter and honey, or tortillas with a little butter and cinnamon sugar. Warm it up until the butter melts a bit and the tortilla is warm.
I have a couple cook books geared for feeding kids, let me pull some out and post some of their ideas.

I like just about every thing that has been suggested.
A few more-
Celery stuffed with cheese-soft cheese, like chedder. IF your kids like "sweet". I found adding sugar/some form of sweetner at least, and cinnamon to cream cheese stuffed in celery and raisins added on top, is REALLY sweet. PB in celery with raisins is also good. (bugs on a log!)
Almonds/nuts. My daughter loves the new flavored almonds. I like the dark cocoa ones by Emerald, and my daughter and I both like the cinnamon brown sugar ones by Blue Diamond.

I love all the ideas. Allow me to add a few of mine as well:
A healthier alternatives to caramel dip for apples:
1/2 c. plain yogurt blended with 1 T dk br. sugar and a drop of vanilla-all the taste of caramel without the calories
Any instant pudding mixed half strength with yogurt. For example use half a pkg of pudding mix (or recipe for pudding) with 2 cups of plain yogurt
All of those little cereal crumbs at the bottom of the box mixed with favorite yogurt-My nephew's very favorite-double crunch.
Other snacks we love are: Carrots sprinkled with cajun seasoning (we make our own without any salt)
Small baked potatoes with salso
Scrambled eggs cooked in muffin cups with a few drops of worchestershire sauce and a 1/4 teaspoon of mustard stirred in before pouring into muffin cups.
Granola served in ice cream cones
Sandwich fingers
If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping! |
