Sandra - The Egg and I is by Betty Bard MacDonald of Mrs Pigglewiggle fame. It is a memoir of her growing up and first marriage when she lived on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State and she and her husband had a chicken farm - absolutely hilarious. She wrote a couple other memoirs - The Plague and I and Onions in the Stew, I've only been able to find the second one, also very funny. I just read The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera (I just got back from France, can you tell:)?) I'm also reading the Farmhouse cookbooks by Susan Hermann Loomis. Amy Grace

A bit more on The Egg and I - it is a great movie with Claudette Colbert and Fred McMurray - it introduced Ma and Pa Kettle. I have loved the movie since childhood, and found the book a few years ago - it is wonderful! Also - Susan Herman Loomis' Farmhouse cookbooks are really good - and her book, On Rue Tatin, the account of her and her family moving to a French Farmhouse is a favorite. |

The Memory Keepers Daughter. I am listening to this one in my car. It is written by the author of The secret Life of Bee's ( loved that one too)
Currently reading "Captivating" I'm to the chapter when they talk about parents and how the mold your life. Sad hits way to close to home. But it has been a book of Great personal journey.

Betty Jo..you are reading my favorites. I will have to look for Captivating.havn't seen it yet. I have loved all the others you mentioned. I am doing some very light reading lately..the knitting mysteries by Meggie Sefton. I am on book 5 (Dyer Consequences) right now. I like them..and have been too busy to get into anything heavy.

I just finished Nancy Atherton's Aunt Dimity Slays the Dragon. For another crafting series, I always try Monica Ferris which includes cross stitching and knitting subjects. If the brain feels like alittle "chill'n", there's an excellent movie about books called 84 Charing Cross Road starring Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins. Also trying to finish biography of John Muir.

I just started the 'Prayer of Jabez' last night, and I'm three chapters into it. Teared up a wee bit in the mid section of chapter two...and I'm not accustomed to doing that, lol. So yes, I'm finding it to be an excellent read.

Thant's great Michelle! I'm glad the book led you to get your mom's history down. Now you can have her cherieshed memories too!
I'm also reading Leaving Home by Garrison Keillor. My Grandma was listening to his program on the radio one day. I didn't understand it then. Till I found one of his books for her and read it before I gave it to her. Now I wish I could get his program here! He is such a great writer and it helps if I can hear his voice as I'm reading the stories. I laugh out loud at least every chapter, so that is a sign of a good book to me.

I just finished "The Prayer Chest" By August Gold and Joel Fotinos. It's a wonderful story about life, suffering and all the riches life can give you if you open your heart and listen. It was truly awesome! Next "The Women" by TC Boyle. Not my choice but that of the book club I join at work. Always up for seeing what others like to read.

I just started Belong to Me by Maria de los Santos. I have only read one chapter, so I can't comment on what I think so far. I just finished several books...The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, The Temptation of the Night Jasmine by Laura Willig, and a handful of what I call "chick lit," just easy reads and the book equivalent of chick flicks and Hallmark movies :)
I have Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks checked out from the library to read next.

At the moment I am inhalins some mystery books by Mary Dahein, about a little town called Alpine in Washington. They are very entertaining, an interesting collection of people and small town life, the reviews say these are cozy mysteries. I think the book I read a few weeks ago, Before Women had Wings by Connie May Fowler. A wonderful book, and I got a couple more of her books from PaperbackSwap. I have been reading some books about homesteading, one is an account of the last woman homesteader in the U.S. Of course I can't remember the name of it, it is in the pile in my room.
I am also reading Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran's new quilt book. It is the sequel to their Collabrative Quilting that was published a few years ago. I have gone to Gwen's quilt retreat in October for the last five years and I find it the highlight of my year. I seldom cross the county line, so to go off to Michigan to quilt for five days is wonderful. I don't think I can go this year. Drat. But this new book is filled with more amazing pictures of quilts, ones they created on their own and the collabrative ones. .
I like Billie Letts' books, they are wonderfully written...oh books, they are the best...

Hello, fellow bookworms! I just finished Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I loved it! I wish I had the gumption to take off to Italy, India and Indonesia on my own. It's a very insightful book, exceptionally written, with enough humor mixed in to keep it fairly light given the subject matter of self-discovery.
I also love Paperback Swap! How can we find one another on there so we can peruse one another's bookshelves? I'll see if I can figure it out.
Today I'll be starting Grace in Thine Eyes by Liz Curtis Higgs. I have stacks of books everywhere! Drives my hubs crazy, but I get really anxious when I don't have something to read!

I'm half-way through Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. WOW... http://www.threecupsoftea.com/ I've been so taken with it that I've purchased the young adult version for a couple of friends pre-teens girls. Briefly, he was making an attempt to climb K2 and got lost. After ending up in a village in Pakistan, he promised he'd return and build a school...and he did. The caveat...the school was for everyone in the village; including the girls. Remember this is primarily a Muslim country in which girls are not allowed an education. Still this village moved forward and has reaped the rewards of educating all their children, not just the boys.
Talk about girl power.... http://www.girleffect.org/
In developing countries girls are the most likely way of raising the standard of living in a local community and yet, girls are often ignored and uneducated. Over 600 million girls live in developing countries. 1 in 7 girls marries before age 15. There is a direct correlation between education and infant/child health. Educated women are more likely to marry later and have less children. When a woman earns a wage, 90% of it goes to their family, compared to 30-40% of a man. An extra year of primary school for a woman, can increase her wages by 10-20% |

Jenny, found you on Paperbackswap and ordered a book! And will probably come back for Sandra Dallas when I have more credits. I couldn't find you, Karin, do you have a profile? I can be found under Cherry in Odenville, AL.
Betty Jo, I absolutely loved The Shack! I gave several copies as Christmas gifts. If you liked it, you'd probably also like Dinner with a Perfect Stranger and A Day with a Perfect Stranger by David Gregory. These, too, are very insightful.
Someone posted about books set in the town she lives in (sorry, don't know how to go back through the posts without losing what I've written so far). Anne George is an author from Birmingham who wrote a series of books based there and in surrounding areas. They're hilarious mysteries and I really enjoyed them because I knew exactly the places she mentioned! Somehow a story really comes more alive when you're familiar with the backdrop!
My reading list is also becoming much longer!

At the moment I am into my Beverly Lewis books again. I am reading The Betrayal now, part 2 in Abram's daughters. I don't have part 1 duh. Love her books, interesting to read, sometimes hard to understand the Amish lifestyle, but still interesting

I always find great books here! One I'm reading that my son gave me yesterday for MD- A Homemade Life - stories and recipes from my kitchen table - by Molly Wizenberg. She has the blog, Orangette, which is very good. This book is wonderful - fun to read, with great recipes at the end of each chapter - I'm loving it! |

I just finished Once Upon a Town by Bob Greene; the story of North PLatte Nebraska and the Canteen the community (and surrounding areas) kept running every day from Christmas 1941 until the end of the war. Unbelieveable. I was crying at each story. I think I'm going to get a copy for my dad for Father's Day. Also reading Ahab's Wife (just started today) Sharon

Bonnie, did you enjoy the Seneca Falls book about woman's suffrage? Have you seen the HBO produced movie Iron Jawed Angels with Hillary Swank and Patrick Dempsey? That movie is what really what sparked my interest in the suffrage movement. Also, when I saw what the women went through in PBS's series The Manor House. I am much more appreciative of our freedoms to vote and work and have an education. Thank God those brave women paved the way!
Sandra and Sharon - I am so glad to see others reading the Anne series. Oh, those books were some of my favorites while growing up. I revisit them every now and then. I recently read a new biography on L. M. Montgomery and there were quite a few insights on how she developed Anne as a character. I especially love the books about Anne's children, Anne of Ingleside and Rainbow Valley. We had our own Rainbow Valley at my grandmothers's house.
Right now I am reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver and I have never been so hungry in all of my life. That book makes me long for food that I don't have and can't get unless I make it myself and I haven't yet so nothing that I eat satisfies. I also have to go to Italy now. Ha!
Also reading A Mile in Her Boots edited by our own Farmgirl Sister Jennifer Bove! I love the variety of these strong women and their outdoor work! As I read I feel that, hey! I could and might want to do that some day! Already told Lovin' Man that I want to be completely debt free within 9 years so that when Oakley graduates we can be open to do volunteer work wherever that leads.
One more, I have to have variety! Cumberland Island: Strong Women, Wild Horses by Charles Seabrook. We will be camping on Cumberland Island at some point this summer. I have wanted to go there ever since Bailey White first mentioned it along with the wild horses. They even have alligators, so you know I am psyched about that!
