Hello!
My daughter (Farm Girl Mari) and I are new to this forum. We were thrilled when we found it! It was by chance I have to admit. I am a home school Mom who lives at the library. MaryJane's book was of our treasures we found there! Marianna was the one who found this website. 
We live in a city in Wisconsin. Our dream is to buy a hobby farm within the next few years. I have lived in my home for 27 years, and thought of moving alllllllll this stuff is a scary one!
In the mean time....
We have learned a great deal about "Urban Homesteading"... We have converted our backyard into a giant garden. *Please see my blog! Marianna and I raise birds... finches,parakeets and doves. And sell them to a local petstore. We also are planning on buying some angora rabbits, so we can get into spinning and knitting. I have had German Angora's in the past, but have had difficulty finding a breeder in Wisconsin. If anyone knows of one... Please let me know!
Basically we are "Blooming where we are planted"..
Marianna my daughter will be 17 next month, and is a true Farm-girl at heart. She is the last of my three children.  I have to admit I was happy to find that there are many of us.. soon to be empty nesters.

WElcome Carla!!! I am so glad you found us..how interesting that you raise birds!! I have always loved the way doves sound and thought..maybe someday I will have some. Our neighbors raise pidgeons.
I think finches are so cute too...so tiny and delicate.
I only have one angora rabbit right now (French angora) but had alot of them (over 25) before we moved here almost 4 years ago. I love them!! I plan to get at least one more this spring. Maybe 2.As far as breeders I would check the angora rabbit breeders assoc (ARBA) I think they have a website...and would have a breeder list. Or ask 4-H leaders who do rabbits..they usually know who raises what in the area. You can check at your local home extension office to see who are 4-H leaders if you don't know.
I love the library too. I am so glad you found MaryJane's book...it IS a treasure!!
You are going to fit right in here..just jump right into the conversations..we talk about nearly everything! I look forward to getting to know you!

| Hi Carla and welcome!! All it takes is to be a farmgirl at heart. I don't blame you one bit for being scared to move. I'm in the middle of a move right now and it's horrible!! I'll be so happy to get to the 40 acre ranch we're moving to but all the in between is a pain!! Glad you're here!! |

Marianna and I are both thrilled to be here! It's so nice to have so much in common with so many people!
We have decided to use Maryjanes book in a unit study, from that I think we will map out our plan to get things taken care of around here. (My husband works full time and also goes to college full time) So he is happy when we do things on our own. I have an older daughter Anna who is 19 and also my son Ben who is 27. All live at home yet, so they pitch in when they can.
Our home has been in our family since it was built in 1937, it is a beautiful 10 room art deco style home. But like all older homes need some updating before it can be sold. If anyone has annnny suggestions as to where to begin.. I would love to hear it!

First....finding this site is NEVER by chance. It is always a divine appointment! You were meant to be here! And I'm so glad you made it.
I just finished posting to Marianna.....so sweet!
We homeschool, also, but I've still got a few years to go. My oldest, Nicole, is 13. I aboslutely love every minute I have with my girls. Even though I am with them all day, I still feel like it's not enough time. I just love'em!

Hi, Carla. I hope you'll post a lot about your "urban homestead" before you move out to the country. I'm just getting started in my first home, and it's in the city, so it would be great to see more topics and tips that apply to the urban setting. For those of us who are still in the "dreaming of the country" stage and have a long, long way to go...

Thank you for the encouragement! My daughter and I were talking about this .. this morning..How we are going to try to "chronical" our growing season this year. So we can encourage all Farm Girls at heart to "bloom where they are planted".. We are in the city by circumstance (just about the time we decided to move, my husband and I decided to go back to college)not necessarily by choice. I've been dreaming of the country for my entire life. I'm in my 40's.. that's a long time! But there are still many things that can be done. It just takes a little creativity. Even if someone lives in a rental.. there is always Patio Gardening.. Window Boxes etc.

Keep up the great attitude! You will accomplish a bunch.
I tell my daughters to always do the best with what they have. I illustrate the 'moral' by asking them if I sew. Yes, of course you do, Moma. I ask, do I have a big fancy $5000 machine? No, you don't. You have a 20 year old simple machine. I ask, do I belly ache about not having a $5000 fancy machine? No, you don't. I ask, do I still sew? Yes, you do. So, even though I don't have an expensive machine I still sew.
The 'moral' is.....you will do what interests you whether you've got all the equipment or not and you will do the best with what you have.
Girlfriend.....you are living it! You will have the best city farm!!

Just joined today myself. Wanted to say "hi" to you and Mari. My youngest moved out about a year and a half ago.( 4 boys now 21-28) he moved out about 3 months after I got married for the 2nd time at age 50. Talk about moving stuff!!! We moved my house of 25yrs into his house of 30 yrs. Then I found out he had all his parents stuff in the basement!!!! For awhile there were only little trails between the boxes. Eventually things thinned out. I have found the neatest stuff downstairs, everthing from antiques to lots of old baseball autographs. my friend says my basement IS antiques roadshow LOL. It's fun being 50. You'll enjoy it I promise. Sounds like you and your daughter are close too. That's the best.

I laughed when I read about your collection of "stuff".. Sounds like me! I have my parents, grandparents, and about 5 other relatives worth of "stuff" after each one died, I just could not bear to give it up. So I always found a place for it. I have had to be very creative when it comes to decorating.. but it works! Thank goodness I have a big house! My husband jokes about having elastic walls that stretch out!
It's fun having so much neat stuff.. nothing is under 70 years old.. Not even my everyday dishes!
I just love this forum! So many wonderful people here!

I related your sewing machine moral at dinner last night... We all think it is a good one! We enjoy sewing here too. Right now we are making custom made pillow cases, for those big body pillows. They are turning out really nicely!

I am waiting to get the packet from MJ, I will be calling soon! So we can get together... Anyone else care to join us.. Please email me! I really like the idea of chapters that are local, because I think the less travel time may allow people to get together more often, then meet as a large group (possibly state, or at least regional group, maybe twice a year, or whatever works for everyone). That might be more "do-able"... Your thoughts???
