By watching and recording the bees at sunflowers in your garden, you can help us understand the challenges that bees are facing. We'll be sending out annual Lemon Queen sunflower seeds in early March 2009. Just in time to plant!

* It takes less than 30 minutes.
* It's easy.
* Free Sunflower seeds for planting.
* No knowledge of bees required!

Enter your bee counts online or send us your paper form.
We would love to have you join us; let’s help our most important pollinators together!

If you signed up in 2008, we will send you seeds again this spring. We'll send you an email this winter to confirm your mailing address and if you respond, your seed will go out in late March or early April.

We love having beekeepers participate.

Deb, I hope it's not too late, but I just sent my info in. So should get an e-mail soon. Thanks for posting this. It sounds like fun. I always have tons of bees buzzing my corn when I pick beans. It sounds like I'm in the middle of NY city traffic, it's so loud sometimes! But makes me feel so good that they can come here and not be killed by all the nasty pesticides and chemicals because I don't use anything here. I need to get some hives put out back.

I never grew a sunflower, not even as a kid. This year I wanted to plant a few in my backyard. I have a small grandson who plays in a house in the backyard so I worry a little about the bee's. I am a bee lover. If this would help in the survey I would to be a part of it.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

I have my sunflower seeds, but I've already got lots of bees visiting the blooming things right now. I love bees.

I love the bees too - the vacation I was on was to France, where it was almost spring (beginning of March) but still not really, but while at the cemetery in Normandy there was heather blooming and lots of bumble bees - it really made me smile. I'm trying to plant lots of native, bee-friendly flowers

I got my seeds yesterday! I have not had time to read the paper yet, but will later. We have lots of honey bees around here. It sounds like NYC sometimes when I'm out picking beans, it's so noisy with them on the corn. I'm not sure about counting all these bees.

I planted some bee balm and will plant some sunflowers. I rarely see honey bees - it makes me so sad! There's plenty of space on our property for a hive - I keep hoping to find someone who will maintain one on our property in exchange for some honey. Has anyone ever tried just throwing out wildflower seeds into "wild areas" of your property? Surely some of them would grow?

Anyone else have problems even creating an account with them? I've been waiting for several hours for a reply email to no avail! When I return to the site for help, it tells me to contact the site admin, but I can't find the place to do that. Help? Please? Anyone?

When are seeds sent?
Fri, 04/17/2009 - 03:59 — Gretchen Lebuhn

We sent out two rounds of seeds in early April. I actually didn't get mine in my mailbox until April 15 so, I expect many of you are getting them right now. There were about 80 addresses that were entered that either didn't have full information or the person had moved. I'll try to post that list somewhere. The next round of seeds will leave here the last week of April and should arrive in mailboxes the first week of May. If you signed up in 2009, you will definitely get sent seeds. If you signed up before then, you need to check back in using the link on the homepage.

Remember to write down the date you plant the seeds. We're hoping to help out the National Phenology Network this year.

Bee Well,

Gretchen

I don't know what kind of problems they could be having with creating an account. There is nothing on their site about that.

http://www.greatsunflower.org/en/user Try that link - it's more direct. If that helps.
