I go every year to AppleUmpkin festival in Wyoming N.Y. The last week-end of September they close down the town and they have the best craft show for free,rain or shine. Because I want to have a few dollars to spend I started to put aside any one dollar bill that had the letter C in the circle on the left. I have found it easier to put a dollar away when I see a C than to come up with the money at the end of summer when I go. Plus all the crafters love to get one dollar bills. Its a fun way to save a few dollars. I started saving this way over 10 years ago. My friends and family also have started to save this way Kahty saves K's Stephanie saves H's her last name starts with a H and she is saving hers for her Honeymoon.
My husband will give me any C he has and we just started a dime jar. When full uf dimes we plan on doing something.

That's fun! I do two things to save money:
1) Raid my husband's pockets before washing his clothes- he ALWAYS has pennies and little change in there. So they go into the piggy bank.
2) When I make a purchase using check or debit I round up. So if the purchase is $5.44 then I record it as $6. Then at the end of the month I balance my account and move all the extra to savings.

What a cool idea!!! I save all my change but have not saved bills. I pay for everything with bills so that I get change. When my wallet starts getting full of change I put it in a jar. It adds up quickly. Now I'll have to start looking for letters on bills.

How fun! This is something I've been doing for years. Actually I dont spend any change or $1 bills at all. They all go into a secret jar. One year I saved over $700 that way-just the dollars alone. Just recently I bought $200 of my plane ticket (to BBB) with my saved coin/dollars. I'm glad you brought this up!

I have a big gallon jug that I save all our change in. I also "rob" my hubby when he comes home. He knows to give me all his change now! I used it the year before last for the grandkids to buy Christmas gifts for their parents and other family members. They all helped sort and count it. It was fun. This year I'm still saving. Maybe I'll have enuf to help a little on my reunion trip in July to Colorado.

When I used to wait tables, I never changed in my coins for dollar bills at the end of the night like the other waitresses did. It's amazing how quickly I could save a couple of hundred dollars of change that way.

| Almost 3 years ago, Ole Ron was buying lotto tickets 2-3 times a week. Never very much but I figured it was about $11 a week. I SUGGESTED that we save the money instead. Well, he did pretty good for a while but now spends about $2 a week. But for almost 3 years now, I have saved $11 a week. I have about $1500 now. When it gets up to 2000 I am going to announce that I WON the lottery and go spend my money. I'm sure glad that I have it hidden away and not in the stock market. |

We too have a "coin Jar" on the bathroom counter, just an old quart size canning jar that at the end of the day the Hub's & I toss our lose change in....it usually comes out to $80-$100 every year.
This last year we used it for our Anniversary dinner....sometimes we use it for a mini day trip of sights seeing and other times we have used it as "gag" gifts....Gave my neice $100 in rolled coins when she turned 21---she was going to Vegas with some friends....
I have also been known to "raid" the jar, for quarters (up here you have to pay for street parking in DownTown Spokane...but I always leave an IOU & put the money back.
It's an easy & painless way to say money and then have fun using for a rainy day...
My current jar of money is for my June Sisters on the Fly camping/antiquing trip...so I won't feel guilty when I spend money on yet another antigue sewing machine!!! lol!

I have bank of america and I do the save the change thing, which is exactly what Alee does, only I use a debit card and the bank rounds up for me and puts the remainder in my savings. It also puts $25 a month in the savings. My husbands regards this as my account since I opened and started it, so if there is something I want to do with it, I don't have to feel guilty. (Now here is a topic ($$ guilt) for another thread!!)
I'm saving for BBB, too! I hope I can go!!

Hubby has two 5 gallon blue plastic water jugs, one for pennies & one for other coins. He filled one up one time & it was close to $1000!!
Right now they are both about 1/3 full, but still, a nice little addition to the household budget. |

When we save those loose coins it is amazing how quickly the jar fills. We have two saving pots. One for pennies & the rest for other coin. I also have the bank of america "keep the change" plan and put $50 a month in that account besides. Great way to pay yourself.!

I have a change jar in the kitchen...the kids and I do something fun with it when it is full. It is the size of a quart milk bottle. It fills up surprizingly fast. I save quarters separate....for other stuff. I have always done this and it has come in really handy alot of times.

I also save any money I get for refunds ... such as the cashier forgets to give me my coupons, so I go to the service counter and get a refund ... into the jar. I return a product and they give me a cash refund ... into the jar. I knew a woman who always asked the clerk for her grocery total BEFORE taking off the coupons, then she wrote her check for that amount, took off the coupons and took the difference in cash. She actually saved enough doing this to take her vacation every year!

I have found that if you never spend the change in your purse that extra $$ adds up fast. If my gracerys cost 10.25 I never give the exact change. I will hand over $11. when I recieve the change back I dump it in the bottom of the purse. Every week I clean out all the loose change and put it in a quart jar. When the jar is full I put it into those paper rolls. and take it to the bank. I stick the bills I get back in my sock drawer. When I want to purchase something that isn't in my budget I just go to the drawer.

Hay yall. Great savings, girls!! I have a pretty jug/container for each coin type. and they are in the same location so as I empty pockets I can seperate and save all at once. Sure adds up if you never spend change only the bills... Last year my BFF started collecting her 5 dollar bills and stashes them ( they add up faster then the 1's) Now when I reach in and go to pay I will break a 10 or 20 before I'll give up my 5s. My stack is growing. I will use my savings, both coins and 5s for oour annual "TWISTED SISTERS WEEKEND". These have grown from us three sisters to all of our adopted sisters too. Sometimes we are 9-10 strong.

Diane, what a great topic! I've loved reading how you all save money. I also clean the change out of the bottom of my purse and put it in my hubby's bank (it's a Big Boy bank). I let him have the change since he never carries money with him. After it's full he'll take it and have it changed to bills. He's like a little kid with it. He gets really excited and will take the money and get himself something he's been wanting for awhile. He could buy it anyway, but feels justified in the purchase as it's 'saved' money. I like to make him happy in this way.

Elaine, I have a piggy bank that counts for you how much money you put into it. Another way I get a little extra money is by saving cans. We have places around here, but they only pay per pound. In Michigan, they pay ten cents per can. I once made $20! I save all my spare change, too. Once I've gone shopping, I empty the coins out of my wallet and they go to savings.

I have to use quarters for the laundryhouse but the rest of the coins I put in a little pull drawer in the bathroom.
My Momma used to save all her coins in this big wine jug. She paid for her Las Vegas yearly vacations with that jug!
