My dad was telling me about one of his lazy chickens today. He said that she lays her egg when she is coming down from her perch rather than in the nest area. The egg falls to the ground and splats in the coupe. He is trying to figure how to make her stop doing that. I said, " Oh! the farmgirls will know what to do!!!" Anyone? Apparently this is the hen with the attitude!

I think she's just stupid... what MORE is there to say?

Hmmmm, I don't know why she would do that, but you may want to place a fluffy layer of bedding under the perch to catch the egg and prevent it from cracking open. Five inches ought to be good.

Thanks for your help. I will let him know that she is just stupid! I think that the perch is too high up for fluffy bedding. Maybe he can try to catch it every morning!ha ha!

My idea would be this: At night, after dark, go in the coop and put her in the nest area/box, and cage her in the nest until her egg is laid, then let her out. Try doing that for several days in a row so she gets the idea of laying the egg there.
I don't know how many chickens your dad has.....but, sometimes older chickens are just bullies and won't let the younger hens in the nests, so then they have no choice but to just lay it where they happen to be - I've even seen them lay one on the run (while the chicken was walking quickly away from me). I find eggs on the floor of the coop by the feeder on occassion and I can only assume the older ones are not letting the young one lay her egg in the nests. I try to get out earlier in the morning and opening the coop so the old biddies go out and eat and the young ones will have better access to the nests. My old biddies won't even allow the younger hens to stand on the floor, its like, "you little twerps stay up on the roosts til we're finished eating!" If they are all the same age, then I'd just cage her in the nest 'til she gets the idea where to lay. |

I wonder if she knows where to lay eggs? I would second what Chris (OregonGal) has said and maybe put in one of those false eggs as well to help her learn that is where the egg is really supposed to go.

I think Chris is on the right track as well. Sometimes they are just dumb and you have to teach them how to be a proper hen! :) Good luck to your dad! Pretty funny, though, that hen has to be wondering what on earth is going on every time she gets down from her perch!! :)
