Man-o-man....what a rolicking morning. My youngest was sporting an up/down fever yesterday and rolled out this morning one toasty little marshmallow at 105.4!!!! He's 8. Tried ice/tylenol but could only get it to budge 1 degree so off to the hospital we went. They got him down to 103....
It appears that he has Fifth's Disease! Apparently in the measles/rosiola/arena. His face looks like he's been slapped hard on both cheeks and he has the tiniest of rashes on both arms. Now he's usually itchy in the winter...so I didn't feel like this was a "rash" but the cheeks! I just thought it was the high temp!! Apparently this is a viral thing and we are in for a 7-10 day run of this. He's beens stuffy (again a few allergies and it's dry) and a bit of a runny nose....all precursors to this whole "slapped" cheek thing! Who knew? AND it's supposed to be HIGHLY contagious. Soooooo, I had to call school. They were NOT happy.....
Good thing I can finally walk again (MAJOR arthritis flair this week had several days out of work....) BUT now I can't take my meds because they supress my immune system to stem the inflamation of the arthritis....which....yep....leaves me open to getting Fifths Disease! I CANNOT get this stuff. #1 I don't have time....and #2 I can't handle those high fevers anymore. At almost 50 even the 100/101 level wipes me out. Now I don't usually use a ton of antibacterials but the spray and wipes have come out today!!!!!
Anyone else have experience with your children and Fifth's Disease?? |

Both of my boys had Fifth's Disease when they were younger. Our doctor called it a "lesser childhood disease." It started with the "slap across the face" look and then spread from there. I don't remember them being too cranky or sick with it although they had the high fever for a day or so. My oldest did have to stay out of school for a few days but other than that, it was pretty uneventful. It's usually contagious before you know they have it, like chicken pox! Who knows, he may have picked it up from another child.
I doubt you would catch it, but just be cautious. You don't want to tempt fate.

| My daughter had this when she was little, the doctor said it is recognizable by the "lacy" pattern the rash makes, we could see it on her chest... |

The little boy across the street from us had "Fifths Disease" last year. His little face was quite red for a long time. Every time he went outside for a few months it would look like someone had slapped his cheeks, but then he has very fairy skin. Otherwise, his fever went away in just a few days. I hope your sons disappears quickly too and no one else gets it.

This went around our school several years and I was lucky enough to get it! I have also had the chicken pox 8 times! Anyway it is HIGHLY contageous and also VERY dangerous to pregnant women. I'd kep him home a few days and avoid church or other group activitez like that. One the fever clears he'll feel fine but the red face lasts a little longer.
