Some of you were following the weird drama of my ear - infections, then bleeding, then loss of hearing. Well, I finally got into see my doc today and he put me through the battery of tests they do for ear problems and said I still have an infection in my Eustachian tube (after two rounds of antibiotics and 6 weeks)so he prescribed steroid nasal spray for that, but the odd part of the diagnosis was he said my TMJ is causing the trouble with my hearing and the congestion in the tube. He said the jaw muscles wrap up and around the ear canal and those muscles are causing a deformation of my ear canal and tube. That goes along with the first diagnosis I got in urgent care of a "dysplastic ear canal". He prescribed something for a "temporary" fix of the TMJ so maybe the two meds together will finally clear this up and I can stop going around said "Eh?"!

Sherri- a lot of dentists prescribe mouth guards to wear at night to help with TMJ. Instead of paying $$$ to have a dentist make you some you can buy shape able mouth guards in the sports section of a superstore or at a sport store. You just heat them up and then make and imprint. Hope your ear starts getting better soon!

I remember shaping those mouth guards for Cody when he was in high school football! I might just try that.

Sherri, glad to hear you know exactly what the problem is. I hope the meds work for you. When I had a bad sinus infection 2 yrs ago the MD prescribed a steroid nasal spray, I spent $40 on it, sprayed it once in my nostril and the pain was like someone shoved a 8" nail up my nose into my head! I couldn't use it. The pharmacy (costco) said "some people can't use it, we could try a different one", I told them since I was paying out of pocket(no H/I) that I would suffer without because it was better than using it!

Good luck! I prayed about your dr. visit.

Where ever you feel the tmj is, put moist when ever you can. And try and be aware of keeping your teeth slightly apart. The moist heat helps relax those muscles that are so tight causing the pain.

I also have TMJ and ear problems. I have been on muscle relaxers for several years now, and it helps. I have tried many times to see if I could stop taking them, and I can't. I also have a nightguard from my dentist. I have to disagree about the sports guard as a mouth guard, because it has to be perfectly fitted to your teeth or it will change your bite and/or your teeth placement. The dentist will take forms of your mouth and then when the guards are done (mine took about a week), they will fit them and check your bite, shaving off pieces to make them fit perfectly. And also every six months when I go to the dentist, she checks it and refits if necessary. They do have nightguards for around $20 in the toothpaste aisle, but I don't have any experience with them. I would suggest talking to your dentist.

I am glad you finally got in to see tha doc, Sherri. I just hope all this works for you.

I have TMJ, too. I had a night gaurd thing the dentist made for me. It really works to stop the grinding and waking up with headaches. Not fun at all. Well worth the investment.

Well, Cindy - seems you were the lucky one - I went to fill my nasal spray prescription and thought I'd better get an estimate on cost first - boy am I glad I did - at WalMart, it was $121.00! And they won't take our union insurance. Safeway wanted $91 and Costco, $92. $40 was a bargain (to be in excruciating pain!)

Sherri, I'm glad I told you my saga, so you were able to check prices first. Sometimes I wonder if I ramble on too much, but at least this time it was a good thing.

Alee - when you asked about the generic, I called the doc's office and she said they'd fax it to my pharmacy. I couldn't believe it - the doctor never offerred that option and I went to THREE pharmacies and talked about the price to all of them and NOT ONE person ever mentioned to me to check into a generic. So this is a good lesson to us all - don't assume they will make you aware of a generic, even when you make the decision not to get the script filled due to the price. You need to directly ask the question - which I did thanks to Alee. NOW, maybe I can get my prescription and start to feel better!! I still don't know what the price will be but it has to be better than $121, don't you think? Thanks again Alee!

Sherri, I have had TMJ for over 25 years and finally, after grinding down all my teeth so that they all had to be replaced with crowns, found a dentist who did make me night guards that actually worked. I have had night guards over the years, some I wore others I did not use as often as I should have. Two years ago I went the rounds with several dentists (major damage by now) and after having new crowns put in, found a dentist who fit me for night guards and then sanded down small areas on my teeth so my bite would fit and after wearing the guards for 2-3 months my bite was just great. I no longer have to wear the guards and I do not grind my teeth. How about that miracle? I love this dentist! Dr. Armand DeFelice

Sherri- I am SOO glad you called and asked about the generic! Our hometown pharmacy would always watch out for you like that but I have noticed that the larger and chain pharmacies just "do what they are told" as in they get the script in and just fill it without thinking about the economic impact that can have on a person. Also don't be afraid to ask the pharmacist for generic. If they have to check which they shouldn't since it is the same medicine- they usually will call the doctor's office to check.
