We recently found this lovely red gingham apron in an antique store. I am not sure how old it is, clearly vintage, and it would be great for a family picnic. The apron is hand stitched and hand embroidered with checks and flowers across the pocket and bottom. With a pocket on the left side it would be very convenient to use this apron in cleaning and picking up toys while taking care of little children.

My daughter posted this on our blog today, but I wanted to share it with all of you here.

I am still marveling at the total hand stitching used on this apron.
I haven't been here much lately but I am still enjoying all the post from everyone about thier aprons. I hope you enjoy this pic.

I have two of these red checked aprons. I think, if I remember correctly, that most of them were Home Economic projects done at high schools in the 1950's and 60's. I know I made one in junior high, and it was so similar to this. My sister made one too, and they were always gingham checked in red or orange or yellow.

Peace

I had a red one too..passed it on to a friend years ago who loved it. It was made by my Aunt and she said she made it in Home ec too..must have been a country wide thing!! haha
I saw a yellow one once too. I wish I had another one now, but the friend loved it so that I couldn't keep that one!

Thanks for the feed back ladies. My mom said that she made aprons in home ec class too, I am excited that it is that old. It doesn't really show in the picture much but 2 inches on top and bottom sides of the flowers are hand stitched little x's. I know they used gingham a lot in teaching because it is easy to follow your lines and such.

Nancy it is listed on my blog page. We have another one that we found that is hand tatted. I will post pic's of it soon.

Here is a link to a photo of my machine-knit apron that won 2nd place at our local county fair. I was SO disappointed, I just knew it was a blue-ribbon winner!
the winner was a flat child's apron with machine-applique on the front.

Nice apron, all your aprons were so cute, what were they thinking??? second prize, were they paying attention to what they were doing? next time make something in BRIGHT red, maybe that will wake them up. Wish I could make aprons like so many of our girls here, those that can sew are very lucky, someone better move in near me real soon and pass on some of this talent.

Brenda, so sorry for the 2nd place ribbon, but wow! Still how wonderful! I am very proud for you! We are all just a bunch of apron kinda girls! So we are partial! Keep up the good work! You will get that blue ribbon.

I had a quilt that was choosen to be in the Houston International Quilt Festival in 2004, just on show, didn't get a ribbon or anything. But I was so proud just to have it hanging in there!

Your work is beautiful!

we'll chat soon!

Nancy and Gloria, thanks for the encouragement! That apron was too small for me when I made it so I saved it all this time to show it in the fair, because I felt I did a really good job of finishing it. Much better than I usually do! Some people think that machine knitting is easy, the machine does all the work, but my understanding is that the finishing is what makes or breaks a knitted garment, and all the finishing is by hand, even with a knitting machine.

Nancy, you have a real talent for encouraging other people! I have noticed this over the last few months! So, even if you don't sew, you are helping them!

Gloria, congratulations on your quilt! That is quite an honor! I don't even enter the STATE fair because of the competition, but an INTERNATIONAL showing! WoW!

Very cute! Is there a picture of the front of the apron too? When I click on both links it takes me to a picture of the back of the apron! Thanks!

Julie,
there is a picture of the front :)I did not realize that both my links went to the same picture. oops. Thank you for pointing that out. It is fixed now so you can see it.

Tasha, I do hope to create a pattern for the regency apron sometime in the not too distant future. I just this week sold the last of my soft yellow ones. But, I do have a great new fabric that is soft pink sheer crinkle cotton (like the yellow)that has a slightly darker pink strip in it. I have not yet created an apron with this fabric but I have pictured the fabric and made it available. I will try and get a sample apronout on the web next week. Thanks for linking to them.

It looks like things have been pretty quiet here over the holiday season. I just wanted to let everyone know about a few changes that we have made at amelia's aprons.

First of all we have transfered the whole web site into a new store module so if you have any pages on the site saved to your favorites then you probably need to update your links. The home page of course is still the same.

Because of the store change we are offering a 10% discount on everything until Jan 31st. enter the coupon code "NEW STORE" in the shopping cart upon check out to receive this savings. We also have a couple new Valentine aprons and several new styles. If you haven't checked us out in a while I encourage you to come and take a look at all the changes.

Oh and we have a new pattern too.

Blessings to everyone. I hope you all had a blessed and restful holiday season.

Lorrie
