I dont know how to spell it, but I am referring to their backsides. I saw MJ's videos and her chickens have all their feathers on their tail ends. My friend has chickens and her chickens have their hiney skin showing. I dont have any chickens yet, but have plans to buidl a coop this spring once the weather warms above 30 anyway and I dont want naked bottom chickens. What causes this?

Is there white flecky stuff back there, too? My friends chickens always had neked butts and they were always picking each other's rears. I don't know if it's mites or some kind of bugs. Hers were always in too small of an area, too, and always at each other. Mine were free range and never bothered each other, so had all there hiney feathers.

Chickens DO normally have the feathers. Now and then one of mine will have a naked Hiney and it is always that she is the one the others are picking on. There always seems to be one "victim". Sad. The more space the better for sure. Mine are nicer to each other in the summer when they roam around more.

Crack me up! I had a few chickens who pecked and pecked some others last winter. They had some mighty looking sore butts that's for sure! I think confinement is tough on them and I have to keep them in an enclosed area because my dogs kill them otherwise. Once Spring and summer roll around and they are outside in their enclosure more and more the pecking decreases. I just noticed that this winter they are all feathered out and look great. They are also giving me plenty of eggs too, which tells me they're happy. Chickens are so much fun! Enjoy having them. ~julia

I love my girls.. and 3 of the 4 are laying.. Rosy the Rrhode Island Red has been a loner.. she stays away from the others except feeding time.. or when I open the door she is right there with the others.. her hiney was a bit messy looking not naked , but now she seems fine.. maybe she was eating more veggies than the rest? she has not laid however .. just came out of molting.. New lighting in the studio so that may boost her egg production..like the rest.

Kim, I have to admit something....I was scrolling up and down the chat forum when I saw your heading chicken hineys. I had just been looking at what people were cooking for superbowl and when I saw your topic I thought....first wings became the craze, how is it chicken hineys???

ewwwwwwwwww I just noticed RIR (Rosy) has a not so rosy hiney.. It is caked with chicken Poop! It looks like she sat in it.. tell me that I do not have anything to do, that she will somehow wipe her hiney herself?

Cheryl. No, she will not wipe her little hiney her self. But you may need to get a warm cloth and clean it off before it becomes impacted and she won't be able to poop. I know baby chicks do that and it will kill them. I have lost a few b/c of that til I figured out what it was. Just a little suggeastion on preventative maintenence.
Also, have you checked around to see if Rosey is laying elsewhere? I always had some that would not go in the house to lay their eggs. What you could do is just watch her and see if she has a favorite spot she hangs out in and wait for the egg laying song. Then go get your egg. RIR's are a little psychotic in my opinion. Maybe that's why she hangs out by herself. The others can probably sense it.

Great advice.. I have tried to catch her with no luck... Except I have falled twice..& she squaks & runs away.. I didn't get hurt except my pride.. and Dh was watching me chase the darn thing around the yard. I will check see where she might be laying..If she is..I was even thinking she may need it to be a bit warmer weather wise? It has only been in the upper 40's here so far..And I think She is a bit PSycho.. Bless her chicken heart....

Ohhhhhhhhhhh I hope she is ok.. She does seem to poop ok,, She just made a mess on my sidewalk.. Maybe she has just been eating too much lettuce.. I am going to watch her closely.. She is drinking & eating fine.. and Shirley this is a great place to share these "intimate" details with all the chicken mamas who understand the problems we have with our babies.

Cheryl, since she is pooping try some ACV in their drinking water . It's a good natural warmer and you can still eat the eggs. No effect on them with ACV. Probably about a 1/4 cup in the waterer. They like it, too.
I wonder if your hubby got pics of you chasing that silly chickie! You could wait til nighttime and get her then. That's always when I would clip wings or do any type of maintenance on them. It's dark and they won't run too far.

What does the ACV do for them? I might try that..No he didn't get a picture of me..I would have had to kill him...We just poured a couple bags of sand on the garden and they went crazy with their dust bath.. They sure love being out in the yard.

ACV is just a good natural way to worm critters and not have to wait for withdrawal times. The eggs are good right after. I put some in the goats water every now and then, and the pigs, too. They love it.

He was cracking up laughing at me... that was enough.. Great I will add the ACV thanks. I have no golden colored apple cider vinegar will the white distilled do the same thing 5% acidity same as the golden colored one?

I don't know about the white . I've never used it. I just give mine the same ACV that I use. I guess it'd be ok.
What do you mean he was just standing there laughing? He should be out there chasing those girls, too! He's eating the eggs isn't he? Then he needs to get out there with you. Don't let him get away with that now! Maybe he's thinking that he built their house, that's enough work for him. My hubby has done the same thing, now that I think about it. I'll be chasing pigs all over the yard and he's just standing around laughing at me while I do all the work and screaming and cursing at them. He'll open the gate to get them back in, though. What a guy. Men!

Kim, I just pour it in but per gallon probably 1/4-1/2 cup, but just maybe once a month or so. I just gave all my critters some more. I'm having to haul water the past few days because everything's frozen. I even give it to the dogs and cats and calves, too. Thay all love it.

Well, Today we trimmed "rosies" hieney... She sure didn't like it.. but Dh & I got the job done, She sure looks better.. with no straw & poop dragging behind her. She is eating & drinking & scratching & keeping up with the other 3 .. Just not laying yet..but appears happy..so we will wait & see what happens next month whenour weather is suppose dto be a bit warmer.
