| I need a lot of advice. I have a 5 day old angus calf that can't get all the way up on her front legs. Back legs work fine but she has one front leg that looks like it is a limp rag. It just flops all over and she has no control over it. This is a strong, healty calf who is trying very hard and has a lot of will to live. She deserves a chance. Her name is Pee-Wee. Any advice is very welcome. |

I would call a vet and see if they can give you any over- the- phone advice. Has she gotten up at all in the 5 days?
It's just a hunch, but I would assume that if in 5 days she hasn't gained control of her legs there must be something wrong- a ligament that didn't form or maybe a neurological problem?

Have you helped her stand up? We had tough calving once,the calf had a front leg back, and was pretty good sized for a heifer to calve with. After much work, I got the leg forward, and a tough pull, we got a live calf. But it also had trouble with the front leg. I don't remember if it was a boy or girl. Anyways, it was able to get up and down by itself, and with time it got better. I had talked to the vet, and he said as long as it was able to get up and down, and suck, to give it time. Hope your calf gets better as well.

Oh I hope PeeWee gets better. I would call a vet as well. Was their any problem with the birth? Did he stand with his mom? We had a calf born breech and its legs were damaged during delivery. Keep us posted.

Pat, how's the calf?? I just saw this after being gone awhile. I don't know if calves are like goat kids, but sometimes they are lacking certain minerals. We have to give shots of like vitamin E and B. I sure hope your calf is doing better.
Is it nursing or a bottle baby? Sometimes if they don't get enuf colostrum, they can have problems, too.
