Boy I am really scared! I ordered eggs from a Texas breeder 2 months ago, and 8 hatched. So far thats a good thing. Just before New Years Eve, one chick ,now 4 weeks old, began having neurological problems, couldnt focus eyes, walked backward, high fever. Took her to the vet, and he suspects one of 4 reportable diseases. She was put down and her body sent to Lansing, for necropsy. I hope he was just over reacting and doing his job. So Mon or Tues I will know what she has. If it is any of the 4, Newcastle, AE, AI, or Mareks, I will have to put down my entire flock, including hubby's prize show pigeons, and grandson's show seramas. But those diseases dont normally have the high fever, and the other chicks should have gotten sick and died by now.I am thinking it could be a bacterial infection, maybe cat scratch fever? I have 9 cats, and they do swat at my chicks through the cage wire. Say a quick chick prayer !

That is very scary. I am so sorry you are going through all this and now having to wait, too. I am hoping it's just that 1 chick and all the rest are ok. Vets do tend to overreact alot when it comes to animals. So don't get to crazy with worry. As long as the rest of the chicks look good and are acting fine, I would not worry too much.

I will pray for you and the chicks that it's just the 1 and all others are ok.

Hugs, Kris

Still no response from the State Lab. Called the vet and he said it should be any day now.Meanwhile my chicks are outgrowing thier cages and I am not going to bring in another cage. The chicks are fine, healthy and eating me out of house and home, and BOY do they need to move outside! Still quarantined in GS's room. Would tolove to at least open a window, but they aresealedshutforthe winter. Ugh

Ooohhh, I hate waiting for anything. Esp. something like this. The others sound like they're fine. How old are they now? I would think if any of the others had what the one that died had, they'd all be gone by now.

Yahoo! The State Lab found absolutely nothing. Now how that can be when a chicken walks backwards, holds its head upside down and has a fever of 107,I'll never know...but am very relieved just the same. So as soon as this artic blast is over-out they go!!!!

Lorriane- Perhaps the chicken had an injury at hatching and the symptoms didn't quite show up until later? I had a chicken like that once and while she was the sweetest thing ever- she was crazier than Snow on the Fourth of July! She would do all sorts of crazy things- like fly up to a fence post and then get "stuck" there- extending out one leg and then pulling it back in- as if she couldn't quite figure out where the ground was or how she got where she was.

What great news, Lorraine!!!! I am so happy for you and the chickies, too. I don't know why they make such a big deal out of some things. I had a scare with the Dept. of Ag. in Atlanta last year. Over nothing. And made me wait a few weeks, too. I made them send me a paper saying there was nothing wrong with my birds so we wouldn't have to go through that again. But I think any time something strange happens a vet must have to report it. We live and learn. But I sure am glad they're all ok.

We have had chicks/hens for decades and every now and then we get a chick that has problems. Its mother nature and its sad. Would love to know what breed it was.
