Its a go!!! My parents say yes, hubby's supervisors say yes, now its just a matter of time. My parents have people renting the farm right now so they have to check when the lease is up. Here's hoping that we can move in this spring!

*******************************************************************
So hubby and I want to live in the country, raise animals, have a huge garden-the whole deal. Right now I'm a stay at home mommy and he is a student (he's working on his Phd) so we have noooo money coming in, we're having to dip into our savings just to pay rent. We've been looking around for a farm to rent because now is not the time to buy (for so many reasons, the housing market, the lack of income, not knowing where we will be 'settling' since it depends on where hubby can get a faculty position ...) So its been looking as though we're going to have to wait a few more years, not the end of the world but disappointing. We want it sooo badly. I especially want to get our son (14 months old) out into the country as soon as possible-thats where I want to raise him. ENYhoo, it occured to me the other day that since hubby will be finished his course work by April (and he'll just need to be researching and writing his thesis) that we won't necessarily have to be close to the university anymore. Which made me think about the farm that my parents own but rent out because they can't live there right now... They've mentioned our going to live there a few times but its never been possible (because of school) until now. So we're going to talk to them tomorrow. If they're still ok with it and if hubby can work thigns out with his supervisors so that he can finish his degree from a distance then we should be able to do this! I can't believe it, I could be back on the farm that I grew up on by April or May!!! I am so excited I can't think straight! It won't be the same as having our "own" place but it will be pretty close! AND with all the money we would save we'll be able to buy our own place the much sooner. I hope we can make this come together-wish me luck!

Stephanie! That would be amazing! Is there the possibility of you buying the property from your parents in the long run?

Sometimes it is the things we have designated "Most crazy" that seems to be the sanest in the end. Hope this works out for you. I love it when life provides "balance", those things that are both "Roots & Wings".

What a great opportunity!! Isn't it amazing how the things closest to us are sometimes the ones we think of last. An idea popped into my head, don't know if it'll be feasible for you, but something to think about. If your parents don't live there now, do they plan to return? If not, or if in the future they might be selling the farm, what about talking to them about a "rent-to-own or lease-to-own" situation? That way the money you pay in rent could be counted towards the sale price. Even if you can't do it now at least you've planted the seed. Just a thought.

Good luck with your meeting. This could be an exciting adventure.

Stephanie, this is so wonderful! Right now my hubbie and I are living on 5 acres we inherited from my parents - house, small pond and collapsing barn included. I'm praying that works out for you because there's nothing like growing up in the country and it would be terrific to get your son out there by spring. You all will have so much fun!!!

Keep us posted on how it all works out.

God bless -

Stephanie, your parent's place sounds great! There is nothing like raising your kids in the country!! Another idea is maybe your parents (if they don't plan on moving back there) would hold a mortgage for you at a lower percent and that would keep money coming into them and help you and your husband out as well if you wanted to buy it. Anyway, just a thought. God bless and I hope you get what you want.

Oh Stephanie! What a wonderful surprise it was to read your update today. Definitely a huge thing to be thankful for this year!!! I am so happy for you. I am living on the land I grew up on too. We lived in my grandparents house until I was 12, when my dad built this house just up the hill. The old place was sold, but my hubby and I have these 5 acres and 20 more down the road where my great-grandparents lived. The old milk house that they used is still standing there! So I understand how special it is to live on family land and I am s-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o happy for you!

God bless -
