BUYING BULK .. how many of you farmgirls and citygirls do this? What a great way to save money .. to put toward items you once thought too expensive. MaryJane tells us of this in a side article on page 13 .. and recommends we go slow at first. And she recommends a book for us to read: Jane Goodall's Harvest for Hope: A Guide to Mindful Eating .. and also Larry Cook's The Beginner's Guide to Natural Living.

Have any of you already read these books? Tell us about them!

Goodness, i can't even think Cold Wather Washing in this hot Kentucky Summer weather .. but you better believe .. i have filed that idea that Carol suggests .. by putting on thin knitted gloves and then cover those with rubber gloves. When winter rolls around and my fingers feel as though they will 'snap off' .. i will surely try this little trick! see page 17.

I just suggested this to honey hunk hank who just returned from the Doggie Beauty Parlor with two beautiful dogs who just got a 'summer hair cut' ... Hank has done the flea and tick treatment that the vet suggested .. but our pups were still loaded with fleas! He called from the vet's office on his way home .. and i told him to STOP and get a BIG jar of Apple Cider Vinegar .. which he did! He is going to give them a rub-down every couple days when he brushes them .. Thanks Paula Johnson for the great idea!

p.s. will also try to get them to drink the one teaspoon in their drinking water.

NOW .. i don't think he got ORGANIC apple cider .. but you better believe i am now on a big search for it! xo

I have not read the Happy Hollisters books (page 22).. but whenever i find them .. i buy them and send them to my childhood friend, Marguerite Hollister! Until recently, i never heard of any one else named Marguerite .. or with the last name Hollister!

Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, The Five Little Peppers and How they Grew, The Secret Garden, and ALL of the Winnie the Pooh Books (just to name a few) were the ones my brother, sister and i grew up on. EVERY night, our Aunt Emma would read us chapters from them .. right after our baths and just before 'light's out' .. what warm memories!

the poem THE CARETAKER on page 23 (side-bar) is wonderful! i love things of 'olde' so much .. and reading each paragraph gave me a smile. I especially loved the part where the author 'wonders about their former owners' .. i think this is why i love olde things so much .. they have 'history -- stories'.

Hey Frannie,

I bought some of the whole wheat budget mix and you really can't tell the difference. It's so light and finely ground. I've made several bakeovers for dinner - very filling. For my neighbors Memorial Day barbeque, I made a strawberry/cherry cobbler. Recipe for cobbler is in the new magazine. It came out sooooo good. Can't wait to try more recipes. I messed up my first chillover, but that was my fault and I just froze it in the ice cream maker and it tasted great. Love the new magazine (or mabye in the book - can't remember). Gotta order more Attitude Bars. Now you have me addicted too!

o.k. .. me again! i have the magazine between the monitor and the keyboard .. and everytime ANY cyber thingie takes a moment or two to show up .. i'm READIN'! .. skipped over to page 29 .. and read the list of produce with the lowest pesticide levels (according to www.organicconsumers.org)

asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet corn, kiwi, mangoes, onions, papaya, pineapples and sweet peas

only like STEAMED broccoli and cauliflower .. eaten RAW ..it feels like i'm eating out of a cat box! too tough .. and leaves 'remnants' between all my teeeth.

don't have mangoes, papaya or pineapples very often ... don't find them too often here in the grocery stores in kentucky .. and surely no organic ones around!

most of these are foods are kinda' high in starch i think .. so .. i only eat them in small amounts.

HIGHEST pesticide level produce:

apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries.

we have our own apple, cerry and peach trees .. (peach trees .. bugs usually get the fruit before it totally ripens .. but NO pesticides here!)
had a few 'organic' strawberries .. from our patch .. we have lots of wild raspberries and blueberries on the vine now .. don't eat too many potatoes (especially white) cuz' of the high carb count .. but SPINACH .. oh my .. popeye! i do loves me spinach!!!

It would be impossible for me to "catch up" for the number of posts needed to win any prize, but I did order two of the bulk Budget Mix and I can't wait until it gets here. I used the recipes in the new magazine to estimate how much I would need if I made, for example, 2 Bakeovers, a panbread, etc. for dinners and scones and biscuits or frybreads for brunch (we only eat two meals, especially in this heat).

I'm looking forward to trying out the potato, garlic, and cauliflower bakeover (p 146) and the next night trying it out as a curry. I have a recipe for potato/cauliflower curry dish and I think I can "shorten" the recipe to make just enough for a bakeover.

I love the hutch on page 61. That's my perfect kitchen right there; just a table, a sink, and a hutch for a work table with a wood top for rolling things out or cutting veggies. I've read old pantries had marble shelves to help keep food cold. I'd love that, too. The photo makes me dream.

allison .. didja' ever hear about the statistics of how very often people will buy just ONE lottery ticket .. or it will be the FIRST lottery ticket they ever bought .. and yet THEY won the lottery! it only takes ONE name entry .. if that is the one that is pulled from the basket .. so don't worry about 'catchin' up' .. jus' keep giving us your great comments .. and oh my yesssssss! what a lovely olde shabby chic hoosier on page 61. i love how the bin is filled with flour .. of course that would be 'mouse city' if i did that here in the woods! i loved looking in the cabinets and realizing that i have almost evereything pictured in the photograph .. the grey granite ware .. aluminum collander, hoosier jar .. cast iron heart muffin pans .. metal grater, milk bottles, rolling pins, white graniteware pans, wooden utensils, wire egg basket, vintage egg beater and lovely aprons! we farmgirls all think alike!

however .. i do NOT have one of those wonderful whipping jars on page 60! i DID have one a few years ago .. but dropped it and busted the glass jar part and have never found another one to fit the top~ someday!!!

don't you just so agree with willie nelson's quote on page 63: "the fight to save family farms isn't just about farmers. It's about making sure that there is a safe and healthy food supply for all of us. It's about jobs, from Main Street to Wall WStreeet. It's about a better America."

Amen to all that!

Okay, so the book pictured on page 22, The Happy Hollisters, reminds me of all the series of books we had around as kids. I inherited the Bobbsey Twins from my sister, because she had moved on to Cherry Ames who was a nurse. But we had some more obscure ones (now anyway): The Lennon Sisters, about 3 or 4 of them, and my all time favorites the Joy series by Dorothy Whitehead of which Joy and Pam was my favorite. It had been one of my mother's books when she was a child. In some move or another my mother got rid of all of them all, but I found the Joy series piece by piece on eBay for less than $5 each (incl ship) so I got them back and read them over Christmas holidays.

I love the simple enjoyment of life reflected in these books, the cooperative spirit of the characters. Maybe it's a myth that those were simpler times, but I know I could run outside and disappear until dark playing and no one worried whether or not I would come home.

Is anyone as happy as I am to have recipes for things like breadsticks and the panbread (like pizza dough) that doesn't make you wait until it rises?

I have a great yeast recipe for those things, but it takes so long and I often don't have the inclination to start early enough in the day to make them. I can't wait til my budget mix arrives. I think I'll make scones and eggs for breakfast and breadsticks with homemade spaghetti sauce and pasta for dinner.

'Am lovin the latest MJF issue! Can't wait to try the recipes,I am looking at the Potato, Feta, and Jalapeno Bake Over. (page 138)

The Article about the historic Flour Mill, love it! Not to mention I share the last name (my maiden) as Joseph.

On page (12 )there is a list of organic recources. Well, I knew that there is a farm that sells organic produce about 35 minutes in the oposite direction of everything else here where I live. I thought I would try agian and just see *if* maybe something was closer. Well , good golly, I typed in www.localharvest.org, punched in my zip code, and guess what came up on my screen. YUP, a farm, a farm that is less then 5 miles away from me. I called, they sent me the farm newsletter, and today My boys and I will be going to pack our own box of organic, fresh, locally grown vegetables. I am just all a flutter...Thanks Mary Jane.

Farmgirl Blessings,

Make-Do's ... on pages 38 (beeeeeeee-you-TI-fullll photo!!!) - 39 .. there is an article on Mother of Invention and Make-do's! I have a most marvelous olde book around here somewhere (gotta' go scrounge and find it!) of make-do's ... real, honest-to-goodness Make-Do's from earlier times .. most of which are, what has been popularized as 'make-do pincushions' .. .these are one of my most favorite things to create! using olde candlestick holders .. be they glass, metal or wood) as the bases .. sometimes the bases are 'painted/crackled, covered with a gluey cinnamon-mix' .. sometimes i just leave the original alone. I've used 'hog scrapers' .. olde-timey potato mashers, and lots of other both 'broken and whole' things for bases .. i always use OLDE (vintage) fabrics for the coverings. you just cut out an appropriate circle-sized 'top' from fabric .. (so the pin cushion does not look either 'over' or 'under' whelmed!) .. then stuff it with olde rages, sawdust, cotton or wool (i find that wool is sometimes HARD to stick pins into .. so i usually use polyester batting. then sew a 'running stitch' around the bottom 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the 'circle' of fabric .. pull it up tight and (make sure your 'base' has a LIP to catch it under. you can add a spot of GLUE underneather where you are POSITIVE it will not SHOW! (nothing ruins the look of something (especially if you are going for olde-timey) than a big blob of GLUE poking it's head out!) ... you can add a bit of lace or other raggy fabric around where you've sewn and drawn tight too .. then get out your olde buttons, rusty safety pins .. (and you can rust pins in water and salt/vinegar .. leave them in the water solution a few days ... OR you can 'blacken' the pins by holding them with a tweezer and putting them into a flame (match stick flame is big enough). gives them an 'olde' look! make little 'thimble holders, beeswax shapes, etc.' to attach to your make do too. you might want to choose a beautiful olde button to sew to the very TOP of you make do to hang these things from! don't put toooooo many embellishments on it though .. simple is best. you can use olde crazy quilt .. or you can even piece olde fabrics together in a pattern yourself. Olde velvets are beautiful .. look for olde worn linsey woolsey .. makes a grat PRIM 'make-do'.
