pages 40 and 41 .. gives two projects to make with wire .. some of the most wonderful things can be made from olde wire! i needed some 'curtains' on our screen porch cuz' i have furniture out there .. and when it rains .. it blows right through the two ends ... so rather than have to mop the floor after every storm .. and air out the cusions on the day-bed .. i hung SHOWER curtains (sounds awful i know .. but you can't see them .. ON WIRE strung from one side to the other ... then i strung another piece of wire a little higher and hung 'moss green' prim-looking curtains on that wire (completely hides the water-proof shower curtains) ... and blends with the striped and flowered pillows in shades of moss green ... then i tie-back the curtains when it isn't raining .. WIRE was my first choice because the curtains slide so easily on it.

reading the farm and kitchen aerobics article on page 43 .. it made me think of all the ELECTRICAL kitchen gadgets i do own! coffee pot (two different types) ... one is a 'frother' (use these e3very day) ... waffle and pancake makers (which i rarely use) .. an electric juicer (which i mostly use during the summertime .. isn't that silly? winter veggies would be yummy in it too! one of those panini sandwich makers .. which i bought a couple years ago and have never taken out of the box .. BLENDER, (small veggie chopper) ... gosh .. the list goes on and on .. OF COURSE .. i have them all tucked away (HIDDEN) in the pantry .. including the coffee pots .. but they ARE plugged in and we make our coffee IN the pantry each morning. just didn't want them out on my counters.

WHAT electric 'contraptions' do you have and use and not use?

Hey Frannie and fellow farmgirls,

"Little Bertha" is out on the counter (my kichen aid mixer). My mom for 19 years was a school cafateria manager (she always made sure the students had the freshest, most tasty food. Homemade sauces ect) They had a mixer, Big Bertha, soooo of course mine is little Bertha.

My toaster is out, sourdough toast is definitly on our food pyramid. But my toaster is really cool, "retro". It's a joy to look at. The third is my coffee pot, which stays out, mostly cuz my man makes the coffee in the morning and I wouldn't want it to become a problem.
The Blender, The papa is into smoothies,"every" morning. It's the breakfast of champions. Daddy-macs smoothie recipe,Ice, OJ, ground flax, oats, banana and protien powder. MMMM, yum, he's a good smoothie maker.

My ten year old bread machine sits in the garage collecting dust, I was just thinking after reading "Farm and Kitchen arobices" page (43) I need to get rid of it.

Stuff that's hidden away that I use, well , the crockpot, waffle iron, coffee grinder, hhhmmm thinking, well that's it. A few years back I did simplify the "gadgets" in the kitchen.

Farmgirl Blessings,
Theresa

Frannie - you go girl! I love those make-do-pincushions and have been waffling over whether or not to purchase a couple of small glass candlesticks I saw at the thrift stoer. They are a kind of teal color so already a bit unusual. I wanted to use them for those pincushions. Now I think I'll have to try anyway! I'll post a picture when I'm done.

Simple Solutions: my favorite has to be the treadle sewing machine. I had one once but when I moved across the country I couldn't take it with me. Boo-hoo. I miss it. But my mom has an old cast iron singer that once was treadle and was converted to electric and was used in my grandfather's vest factory. I plan to convert it back as soon as I pick it up from her (she's on the east coast).

My own simple solution isn't even a gadget: it's soap, plain soap. I grate it for laundry, swish it in the water for dishes, use it in the shower and at the sink, in a bucket of hot water for cleaning. JUST SOAP! I don't buy products for every corner of my home. ICK! I can't stand the perfumes. I buy Ivory because it's so inexpensive. For us it's a matter of money which is why I, sadly, can't buy from one of the local or farmgirl soap makers. Just too hard on the budget. We've gone below poverty level again. Good thing we live very simply. It just tightens the belt for us but otherwise doesn't affect us as adversely as so many other people who have car payments, medical bills, cable TV, etc. Soap - simple and frugal!

Frannie,

I do grind my coffee beans every morning. Used to have a hand grinder, but someone gave me a little electric one and I do like it! As far as electric appliances, I have the kitchenaid mixer on the counter too. Love it and use it often. Cuisanart is in the closet - use it once a week. Gave my toaster to our daughter. If we have toast, I just do it in the broiler. Have a blender that I use mostly in the summer. No electric can opener. Bread machine also in garage. Used it at first, but I like kneading my bread and the whole process of doing it by hand. I think I'll have a yard sale. Boss gave me a set it and forget it - and I forgot it!! Takes up too much room. Why couldn't he give me money!! I'll sell that too.

I'm gonna check out Bernina sewing machines if you are happy with yours. I have a Singer zig zag from 1978 that still works great, but the zipper foot broke off the shank & I cannot find a replacement. Bought one online that I thought would work and it doesn't fit. I'll keep looking, as I hate to trash something that still works, but will check out Bernina's too.

Allison - I'm gonna try some of the make-do pincushions too! Love them.

oh i just HAD to have that beautiful Kitchen Aid mixer .. i think i've used it once or twice .. but it's nice to know it's there when i want it! Don't have one of those toaster/broiler thingies .. did years ago .. but i was usually jus' settin' that sucker on fire! I don't do the electric can opener either. I mean .. HOW EASY is it just cranking that hand-held thingie .. HA! can probably say the same thing about a lot of other electric doo-dahs that i have!

Oh chile .. i HIGHLY recommend a Bernina .. i don't even take as good care of mine as i should (like OILING it! but it never fails me!) Kinda' expensive .. but you can get a reconditioned one if you prefer .. actually, mine does about a ka-billion things that i don't need it to do .. just back and forth .. an occasional zig-zag .. but MOSTLY .. no TENSION bunching! xo

page 27 ... We ARE the People .. by Joe Carpenter .. OH SO TRUE!!! We make such an impact by the lives we live and the words we say! And isn't that just the dearest little picture of the American girl in the tri-corner hat carrying the flag!

What are some of the 'good words' you've spoken to someone recently?

loved reading about the farmgirl chapters on pages 48 and 49. do any of your gurlz belong to a farmgirl chapter?

we had a wonderfully fun gathering of farmgirls from several states a few weeks back .. we spent a couple nights and few days together.

i do plan on another gathering .. will probably be a 'one-day' one this time though .. have some fun plans for the day .. sooooo .. be thinkin' of travelling this way (central Kentucky) .. sometime during the month of JULY .. will let everyone know the date soon's i know of it! we will probably hang out here at cabin creek farm and do some creating and baking and cookin' over the firepit .. and walkin' in the woods .. and lots of idea exchanges and stories and giggles! e-mail me if you think you even MIGHT be able to attend. i hope to get some of the local girls to come to this one too!

IF you need to spend the night .. we have sweeeeet cabins down by the river right in the town of GREENSBURG .. they are only $45. per night and sleeps about 4 people per cabin .. which is pretty reasonable split 4 ways! but let me know as soon as you hear of the DATE cuz' it is summertime .. there is canoeing down on the river and they may book early (only 4 cabins down there!) xo, frannie

p.s. i'll put this in it's own thread too!

MaryJane's magazines and the kitchen Aide mixer have just moved up on my want list. They have both been on the list for sometime, they just seemed to keep getting pushed back for something that seems a little more important. Right now the only thing ahead of them is a new rototiller, so I can quit farming out all the tilling work. I know that her magazines would be read over and over and over. Especially if her magazines are anything like her book. I have had it for 3 months now, read it from cover to cover, and it still hasn't migrated into the bookshelf. It sits on the coffee table, on my desk, or in the car. I have even started using post-it notes to mark on the pages I want to read again, for the millionth time. I think we need a MaryJane's Ideabook Club!!!

Hi all
Well because of the latest issue I have ordered a lot of MJ'S products and loved them all.I love the feel of the magazine, as in the kind of paper used. The pictures all through the magazine are so well done, the sunflower on page 115 jumps right off the page!I love the little bare feet with flour on pages 52 and 53, reminds me of my granddaughters. And can't forget one of my favorite things,APRONS, lots of those showed up in this issue.

puttin' names in the basket now .. remember .. you only have to have your name in the basket ONE TIME to be the lucky name drawn ... however .. we have several gurlz who have their names in LOTS of times: these are approximate numbers .. but so far:

june bug has her name in the bucket FIFTEEN TIMES .. as does nancy gartenman .. and cajun girl is in there TWENTY times!

i guess you do have an 'advantage' when your name is in the basket lots of times .. sooo .. i'm not going to do any more posting in this thread .. will leave it up to the rest of you gurlfrenz .. will have the drawing sunday night at midnight (or sooner if i get too sleepy to stay up that late) ... so post away as much as you want! xo, frannie

Well Frannie,
What a fun idea. I have and love every issue of the magalog as well as her book. I will be ordering her little book of wisdom as soon as I get paid. I am lucky enough to live in a town not too far away from a food co-op that carries her merchandise. That is where i found my first issue of the magalog and the very next time I went shopping there I bought a sampling of everything they carried from her inventory. It is all soo good. I shop for most of my supply of instant food for traveling and fast meals when I am there. This way I feel I am encouraging my local store to keep a good supply.
I just love all the recipies in the latest issue, don't you?

Eileen .. i sure wish i could find a local source for MaryJane's products! The closest i've found so far is some of her foods at REI sporting good store in Nashville .. mostly food for back-packers .. and that is a 2.5 hour ride from me! Is it a small store that sells here goods .. i don't think the big 'chain' ones do. If i had a store, i sure would carry them! I do have a neighbor that grows organic and i buy summer produce from her .. and since i use no pesticides whatsoever .. i guess what i grow is somewhat organic too! xo

The first magazine I've seen is the current baking issue. I had it for about a day when my neighbor borrowed it. I'm currently in withdrawal from the magazine! LOL I think I will be getting visitation rights to it any day now. She and I both love the magazine....NO adds, heavyduty paper, Love the photos....but of course we read the articles....*g*

On the inside of the back cover, there's a photo of a white rack with vintage linens hanging from it. I just saw a cd rack similar to that at a yard sale. I have to go back and pay them for a lamp I bought. (I bought a bunch of stuff and they're letting me come back.) If they still have it, I'll bet it would look nice with some teatowels and dresser scarves on its rungs. Nice to have these ideas floating around.

And, too late, those blue-green glass candlesticks were already sold when I got to the thrift store. They were there forever, but now that I was going to buy them: voila! gone!

Those adorable sneakers and striped socks made me giggle. My daughter and I both wear Converse high tops and we love to pair them with fun socks, especially polka dots and not only that but unmatching! In my universe that's angel uniform stuff!

Does anyone else own a baby book that's basically empty? The picture on page 164 reminded me of the day I discovered my baby book - well, three of them - only to find my brother and sisters were all filled and all of mine ended after page 3. Oh, well, being the last child meant my mother was terribly busy. Still, I like to have been able to see those things in print. I don't think my mother remembers all that stuff like she used to.
