I'm trying to lose the 15 pounds that I gained in the last 3 years after starting my first real desk job. Between the sitting all day and the never ending office parties, it's not easy to be healthy at work. I try to pack healthy food, but after a few hours of sheer boredom I start picking at the donuts just for the adventure of it.

I didn't have a scale at home until this fall, but I think I've lost 3-5 pounds this year. That doesn't sound like much, but it arrived in tiny increments so I guess it will leave that way too (fingers crossed). It's especially frustrating because my husband started riding his bike to work this spring and he's lost over 30 pounds! I'm happy for him, really, but geez. I always used to be the thin, healthy one.

I have a suggestion for anyone looking for a piece of indoor exercise equipment. Remember the Nordic Track info-mercials from the 80s and early 90s? Those things are awesome, and everybody who bought them when they were trendy has given up on them now. We got ours out of the local classifieds for $50. It's a great workout, and doesn't need any electricity. Plus it makes a good drying rack on laundry day.

Hey Heather...it would be awesome if you would check out one of our TOPS meetings here in Manchester on Tuesday evenings. Some members drive from Masonville and surrounding towns and I hate being the youngest in the group with mainly "old" ladies. I've been a member since last June and have lost 17 pounds already and just have 11 pounds more to meet my goal. It is an awesome group where you meet once a week to weigh in (your weight is kept secret except to the weight recorder) and then a nice, encouraging meeting. It costs $26 a year (a magazine subscription is included) and $1 per meeting but if you are the biggest loser that week you get your $1 back and you can often win $5 chamber bucks. E-mail me if you want more info.
And actually, most towns in the US have a TOPS near them, so you can google it and put your zip code in.

Alee ~ Wonderful post! I too am trying to not look at the weight number but to be healthy... WHOA I JUST HAD A MOMENT OF CLARITY.....Now I know what I was doing wrong!!! Ok I keep saying I want to be healthy not worry about the numbers. So I eat lots of fruits, veggies and healthy meats but when the weight doesn't come off fast enought I start fad dieting WOW. I just need to avoid the scale and worry about how I feel and how my clothes fit YEA!!!!

I seriously have no metabolism left. The last several years of massive steroids have distroyed it. I have to go down to 800 calories a day to loose 1-2 lbs a week. Also 4 hour commute and 60 hour weeks leave no time for exercie. So this is very stressful.

Now that I have had my moment of clarity here is what I am going to do.

1. Eat healthy-no dieting
2. Portion Control
3. Increase tea & water
4. Do 10 minutes on my eliptical in the mornings & 5 minutes of weights
5. Walk during my work breaks ( 2x 10)
6. Do 10 minutes of eliptical in the evenings

I figure something is better than nothing .... OH I AM SO EXCITED..
best of luck to us all

live well,
Tamara

Tamara- they say one way to revv up your metabolism is to eat a small snack/meal (about the size of your fist or a little over 3 ounces) every two hours and drink tons of water! If your body is always processing a tiny bit of food it helps control blood sugar and makes your body realize their is enough food coming in and it can function "full steam ahead" so to speak. I did this years ago and lost about 20 lbs in 3 months and had so much energy! I also chose to bike most places (it was summer) so that helped, but even when I was being lazy- the every two hour thing really works. I am working towards doing that this year as well.

The first week or so you might be hungry and that will be the hardest. But once your stomach shrinks, you will actually feel satisfied with a small meal and in the two hours be ready for the next one.

I remember going to restaurants and cutting my hamburger in half and feeling uncomfortably stuffed after eating only half the hamburger and maybe one or two fries.

Just an idea- hope that helps!

One of the things I'm finding out is how little I really need to eat for a serving. I think I always serve and take too much food. Also I can eat a small amount of something and be satisfied. I am really looking at cutting my portions in half. I just did'nt really notice before. Also I'm trying to not let myself get too hungry.

Another thing we need to think about is sleep! When I am tired, I eat more because my body is trying to keep me going. Even if I just take a 10 minute nap I feel less hungry and much more efficient!

Alee,
Thanks for the heads up regarding "Fit TV"....I have not found it on my cable guide...but I just subscribe to "basic plus"...BUT, I did find a TOPS group and am going to hook up with them on Tuesday. I have to tell you.....I looked at your blog and you are just a little cutie pie......as is Miss Nora. I love all of your responses to the topics I subscribe to, and I know if you lived near me we could certainly be "partners in crime". I have not been very active on the site lately, due to "this and that"...but once I start in again I always feel like I'm spending the day with my FRIENDS. Here's to many, many more topics and gab fests my dear.
Ever, Kate

Oh thanks, Kate! You are so sweet! I would absolutely LOVE it if we lived closer! Are you going to go to the Farm Fair this year? They are calling it the "Barter, Buggy, and Boogie" Farm Fair or BBB for short.

Whee! I like this thread! It's exciting to see everyone getting healthier!

I eat fairly well, although I just had a cream cheese danish for breakfast! It's an occasional treat, okay?! :D

My goal this year is to work out regularly and consistently as well as to try to take up road biking. Try because I don't have a bike, nor money yet to purchase one.

I've been using the Wii Fit to start working out again. Wii Fit is great for just starting out again. You can go nice and slow to start up and it's fun to use it to get a workout routine started and regular. You can also use it for heavier workouts - you can break a good sweat too! But for me, now, I'm just starting again so taking it slow.

I've also seen the Namaste Yoga and Shimmy on FitTV, but haven't done those yet. I will try them soon. My favorite in Virginia was Wai Lana yoga (www.wailana.com) but they don't have her on any of the PBS stations here in PA.

I'm also using www.DailyMile.com to track my workouts. It's like a mini-workout social/blogging site! If anyone is on there, I'm Gankaku there. It's sure rewarding to put in a workout and see your progress.

Welcome to the Challenge, Lisa! After taking some time away from exercising, I am getting back on the horse in a big way this week! Today I am going to do 2 yoga routines and tomorrow I am starting the gym again!

I'm in for the challenge. I started going to a Pole-dancing class. Sounds funny doesn't it. At first I thought I was crazy and everyone there is younger than me, I'm 44. But after the first class realized it is 75% yoga and pilates and 25% pole dancing which uses all your core muscles. Right now only going once a week as that is what fits into my schedule, but starting mid-Feb will be going twice a week. Here's to health in 2009.

Ingrid- I would love to take one of those classes- If nothing else I think it would be a fantastic workout but I also think it would give a woman's self confidence a huge jump!

They are a lot of fun. Every class we have a laugh because we learn something new each time. I found out about this because I ran into one of the instructors in the grocery store and we started talking. The instructors promote the class as a safe haven to go to where everyone is equal regardless of level of fitness and they actually believe it and show it.
It's just nice to get together with other like minded women to work out. Keeps us motivated. Talk to you soon. Ingrid

I'm with ya, but any serious efforts will have to be put on hold until summer, as I'm due with my second child in April. I'll start by trying to battle my chocolate cravings in my third trimester and not eating too much junk, and by going on more walks.

Yay, Lisa! I'm glad I'm not the only one using Wii Fit! My 4 year old and almost 2 year old try to do the yoga poses. It's really funny! But not near as funny as watching hubby "hula hoop!"
