OK I let my husband talk me into getting an ice fishing shelter for Christmas. OK, so we went out today to Petrolia Lake out in the middle of nowhere in Montana. We fished for about 5 hours only getting one hit but no fish. We tried two different areas still no luck. Most of the other fisherman were having about the same luck as we were having. A few did get some perch but no walleye.
I wanted walleye for dinner tomorrow. O well, there is always next weekend. Hope the temps hold, I don't do the minus thing.

Let me clarify a few things. I have to be warm or we don't stay long. I don't bait anything that was a live at one time. Neither do I do the take fish off the hook thing either. I have been married for over 25 years. Started this type of fishing when we started dating 2 1/2 years before. OK, I know I'm spoiled but my husband just keeps taking me out to fish can't figure it out. I feel that when one has a good thing going why change it. Funny thing is my daughter loves to fish. She baits and takes her fish off the hook but won't take me her dear mother fishing. Wonder why? Plus I don't clean or cook the fish either. I eat them though.

Hi this is Madelynne's husband John. Four inches of ice is safe for a group of people walking. One foot of ice will support a full sized pickup truck. today the ice was three feet thick.
Alee John also has bought me a small propane heater that takes some of the chill off. The shelter breaks the wind and keeps the heat in and the ice does not melt either.
PS I made my husband type the first part as he always tells me but do I really listen or remember? NO! It was cold but fun.

madelynne it took me almost 30 yrs to figure out that hubby just wants to spend timme with me. i hunt fish etc with him but while i will take my fish off the hook and clean them usually he wont let me clean them lol. i also DO NOT field dress the moose or caribou! good thing my hubby likes to keep me "safe" (i might cut myself lmao) you got me on the ice fishing tho! no way i am gonna sit there on the ice, even with heat, as the cold comes up thru my feet! thankfully that is somethign that hubby doesnt really see the need to get into! lol. temps here have been runing between 30 and 55 BELOW so no fear of the ice melting! its usually about 4 ft thick this time of year. in fact we use the rivers for super highways in the winter *grin* peace connie in alaska |

Connie I go with him during hunting season too but I only shoot pictures and not animals. I can't eat deer but love elk. He really doesn't want to eat a whole deer by himself so we look for elk. The ice fishing up there in AK seems a little ruff for me too. We only fish on the ice if it is safe. If the weather gets to warm in the nights or the ice gets slushy then the ice fishing is over. I have started to fly fish, haven't really caught anything but my husband loves the company. One thing I really miss since moving to Billings is the kayaking that I did up in the Kalispell area. Don't think I can kayak on the ice. OK might wait until this summer.

Madelynne and John-
Glad to hear the ice was so thick! We had some bad ice fishing accidents around our home town when I was growing up (probably people being less than intelligent) so that is probably one of those things that I won't do very often if at all in my life!

Alot of ice fishing people, around here, use fish locaters to find the fish. I think that is cheating, oh well. sometimes your fishing by the bottom and the fish are closer to the top.
Good luck Michele |

Madelynne - I about choked when I saw that you went to Lake Petrolia! That is only about 20 miles from our cabin! When you get to the turnoff to the Lake, you just keep going about another 12 miles, then turn off the highway and go 10 miles on a dirt road. Now you know how remote WE are!! Did you stop in Winnett to eat? If you go again -- you have to stop at Cozy Corner - little tiny place in Winnett - they have an article on the wall in there from Gourmet Magazine. One of the writers for the magazine was on his way somewhere and happened to stop in there - I know hard to believe - and ordered the pancakes and was so overwhelmed he wrote it up in Gourmet. The owner is a crotchety, crabby old guy - Buck is his name - but that's part of the charm of the place. His wife is the cook and she makes to-die-for pies. All their food is great - or maybe it's just because when I go there, Ive been isolated at the cabin eating only my own food for so long anyone elses' cooking tastes great! But you have to stop anyway, just to experience Buck.
