Hi all,

I just got Mary Jane's Farm Outpost book and am so inspired! I'm pregnant and am expecting in March--I wonder if any of you could share your favorite resources for hiking, biking, camping, etc., with a baby or young kids? Books, blogs, websites, I'm interested in it all. I'm curious about what to bring, what to avoid, etc., I know Mary Janes talks about this briefly in her book but I wonder if there are other resources or maybe even magazines dedicated to this.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there....I have 2 babes myself, ages 2 & 3 and have been taking them camping since they were both born. And not just camping, but we do historical re-enactments, which means camping in teepees, no electricity, no running water, everything in camp has to look just like it would in the year 1840 or earlier, even our clothes! We love it, and so do the kids! My advice is, when you go out like that, take EVERYTHING..lol . I have always been prepared, and if i had forgotten something, it turns out i really didnt need it after all. If there is one thing and only one that I could tell you to take camping, hiking, etc with kids, it would be chickweed salve....I never leave home without it! It works on ANY type of insect sting or bite! It immediately takes the burn away....I don't even bother with those OTC anti-itch creams anymore, they don't compare to the power of chickweed salve. You can go to www.healin-hollers.com to order it. They have lots of other natural products that TRULY do work, so far we have been nothing but COMPLETELY satisfied with anything we have gotten there...Congrats on your upcoming arrival, momyhood is the most wonderful job on earth! Best wishes....Kelley

Hi Kelley,

Thanks so much for the info. I put the chickweed salve along with two other products on my alternative gift registry for the baby. It sounds like great stuff, and it's mostly organic. Best of all, it has ingredients in it whose names I can pronounce!

That's so neat that you do re-enactments with your babies. My oldest sister does these too. I keep reminding myself that women have been having babies and doing a lot of things with them that most people consider "dangerous" for many hundreds of years.

Thanks again--I'm very excited for the end of March! :)
