I love using old lady names for my critters....much easier to name than the boys for sure! I have had pet turkeys named Earl and Clyde, and all manner of chicken names. My roosters usually have R names...so I can say Richard Rooster or whatever. (Richard is my current rooster) My name for Mona my milk cow has been chosen since I was a kid..I just always thought it was the perfect name for when I got a cow. I first heard it at a restaurant...the waitress yelled...HEY MONA! back to the cook and I was hooked..perfect name.
We had a chicken named Aunt Roberta for years...and ducks named Scarlet and Rhett.
I have a baby name book that we use for lamb and calf names sometimes. I let the kids name the boys (who won't be staying long) and once had twin goat kids named Thumbtack and Thor. (the boys did that) Hmmmmm...

Names can be so fun. Lets see, we have had, twin bull calves, Pete and Repete, a rooster Roscoe, I added P Coletrain. My husband named my heifer Summer's Eve, sorry it stuck! ( Summer is Eve's momma ) Now of course we have Adam. One year we named our beef heifers after the ladies in the Austin Powers movies! Well the boys did that. My two turkey boys are Tom and Jake. Okay not too original!! But fitting!

I don't alway name all of the animals here as we have a lot, and now that I am in the house more with little Oliver, I don't get to know all of them as much any more. Some of the names that we have for cows are Pinky, Peaches, Pudding, Nachos, Silky, Beauty and Spray Paint. Some of the pigs names are Alfred, Mr. Tom. I had a turkey once name Penelope.
you gals have had some great names!

I have an easier time naming the roosters, because they all are different. My chickens, except for one look alike. I have a rooster: King Arthur, Sir Lancealot, Samson (he is my beautiful white giant rooster), Penquin (my black bantam) and my Seabright is Runt. Otherwise the white hens are Gracie 1, 2 & 3. The Rhode Island Reds are nameless and my favorite hen is Spunky. My Quarter horses came to our farm named already, so we kept their names, Lexy and Willaby. My dog is Lucky, already named Lucky at the Humane Society. Cats: Mama Cat, Tigger and Rascal. And our new Doxie is nameless at this moment. Only had her one day. And this morning I'm tired, my new puppy does not sleep well, misses Mom and siblings.

So far I have named two of the new hens .. RhodeIsland Red is "Ruby" and the Barred rock is "Dottie".
The two budff Orphs are still unnamed but I will see what their personalities reveal.. I tend to go with older womens names too..but we shall see. When my kids were younger our first steer was Beaurigard ,, Beau for short and when he ended up on the table we had T-Beau Steaks & Beau burgers... _The kids were aware when we got animals they could name them but we had to eat them too.. I think my kids were not tramatized....They all say they loved the life on our farm.

I love all your farm critter names. They are so cute and very creative.

When I first started out with farm animals I started with A and went from there. Sometimes I'd get out of line and have 2 of the same letter. I found out later my Grandmother did that.

My first 2 goats were Cora Belle and Clare. I had a white hen named Spot. Only the hens that I could tell apart from the others had names. And roosters, too. My rooster now is Russell Crowe.

I had goats named Queen Esther, Priscilla, and Rebecca. My current goats are Abby, Ocho Belle (she has an 8 on her left side), Sandy goat, Faith, Holly Berry and Sadie Mae Belle.

My calves are Cowboy and Maize Mae Belle. My dogs are Bubba, Sophie and Zoe. My granddaughter named our inside cat Soshe from a Josh Groban song "So She Dances".

Sometimes it takes a long time to come up with the right name for a certain animal. It took several months to name Maize Mae. It just fits her.

My lambs name is Baaab and the rabbits are Daffodil and Hopper. THe cats are Buster, Snowy, Muffin, and Alakae (he was just knighted Sir S...s A lot and banished to the out of doors!!!) THe chickens also live in Alcatraz which had an escapee last week who didnt go far and was returned to his cell!!!

I am much too practical in naming animals. They are all one or two syllable names so I can say em fast. My niece comes and names lambs just for fun sometimes and she had 2-word names for lots of lambs and it was sort of fun...like Jumping Bean. One year we had a stray kitten in our hay shed that was dark gray with yellow/gold eyes (and she was thinking of Halloween too) and she named him Pumpkin Storm...that name stuck until the cat disappeared early in 2008.

DH likes to name things from cartoons, like dogs Bart and Lisa and ewes Patty and Selma. Oh forevermore...that man had no life before he met me!

We named our pigs, Bacon and Sausage. Our grandchildren come up with different names for pigs, like Candy,Levvie, Dot, and Mater. I had a cat named Rosie Begonia, and I now have a dog name Gussie, and two cats, Squeak, and Chubbie Bubbie.

I love all these names!! We are getting chickens this year so will have new ones to add but we have a cat named Kitten - really, we have tried to name her other things but this just fits - and a Basset Hound named Annabelle Tallulah, which also fits, she is a very self-centered type, she orders us around all the time:)

What a FUN post. My kids and I were just naming a few chickens today. Here's what we have right now.

The ponies, both named previously:
Derby (I call him Derbikens)
Rosie (called Rosemary, Rosalee, Rosie Posie)

The Ducks:
Luna
Zoey
Serious Black (Harry Potter, he recently passed away)
2 more whose names escape me at the moment (ACK!)

The cat-
Nymphadora (Common name Dori- from Harry Potter)
Rumi (Rumi-Balumey) There's something about rhyming names!

The dog-
Lavador Ashton (Ash, Ashie, Ashie boy)

The chickens-
Henny Penny (Miss Penny)
Hope (the only survivor of the original Hope, Faith, and Charity)
and the new young chickens, not all named yet:
Dime
Quarter (to go with Penny)
Chicken Foot (recently stepped on by the pony)
Elizabeth
Hawkeye

The guys name our cows the stupidest things:
Red--she went away before I could re-name her
Wanda(named by somebody's granddaughter)
Lucy(Lucille Ball)
Jeff(Gordon)--big Black Angus bull with ear tag #24
2 more red cows with names that escape me at the moment.

My cow started out with the name Duke--go figure--it's what her ear tag said on it. I call her
Daisy Duke. Her heifer calf is Jazz or Jasmine.

Only one chicken is named. The barred rock is Sparkles--named by my grand daughter.

The dog is Cubbie--she came with that name--and the cat is Linus. He's the only remaining cat of the duo Lucifer and Linus. They alledgedly came to our house to be barn cats. Ha Ha. He does occasionally hang out in the barn.

When we had rabbits, my daughter started the trend of using candybar names so we had a Snickers and Milky Way. If I get rabbits again, I think I'll continue the tradition.

I have used numerous names for the dogs over the years: named a Rotwieller (sp) Cupid because she was born on Valetine's Day, a yellow lab Idaho (just because) and my baby Cheetah came with that name.

I currently have two cats, Angel (named by my daughter) and Romeo, who at moments of his choosing can be loving and cuddling. The kitten I recently lost I was calling Munchkin because she was so small.

As the above post, our children and now us, name anything that we are going to eat, after the parts on the animal, suasage, goat burger, loin chops, backstrap.
Than our children(when at home), decided to name our 600 pound boar Pig "Fred", that stuck, until we butchered him too, and then it changed to, I cannot remember...something more edible...
This had been quite funny and interesting reading about all of the names we all think up!!!

We tend to name our housepets after other animals...

We had a dog named Bear, a cat named Squirrel & another cat named Cricket. We had a cat named Biscuit who had 6 toes.
We had a hampster named Butthead.
Now we have our Christmas kitten and she's finally received her new name: ROXY! She was a sick kitty who has already cost a pretty penny, so her middle name is Million. Roxy Million.
