as has been described by my mil's as "soooo elegant". I feel soooo pressured now to be elegant right along with the shower, and honestly, I don't feel very elegant!!!! All this week, I've scoured the maternity stores and thrifts, hoping to find a nice dress, and just can't--it's all black or wild patterns, or you look like you're going to the office. Mostly, I just look terrible in them. Who wants to see buffalo plaid on an almost 9 mos. pregnant lady? My sil, who is also helping with the shower, had her shower thrown when she was only 5 mos, because they lived in Boston, and it was Summer, and she was absolutely perfect in a bright, cutesy floral. I'm going to look like a rohrshak test!

I'm not that large--I've only gained 28 lbs., but I have no waist--it's 2 (very large) bumps up top and then a larger single bump below! Makes me look like someone from Willy Wonka. And my feet? Gah--all these dresses are shown with women in heels and high heeled boots. Can't recall the last time I've had a heel on my foot (fracturing my ankle at 6 mos. sortof put the kabash on heels and vanity, ya know?)

Sorry for the rant...I know many of you have had children...I'm just wondering why they had to say "elegant"???

lol..being that far along, you could go safely any day now. :) Being elegant is no doubt farthest thing your mind right now. My friends had a pretty baby shower for me when I was 8 months along with my son. I just went in dressy slacks and an "elegant" blouse. As the one carrying the guest of honor, you get to be the perfect exception.:O) No reason to wear a dress and be uncomfortable.
Hope you are feeling better about this--Its about you and the baby and you want it to be a time that you remember with fond memories.
hugs and encouragement,

Thanks, Jessie...your kind words mean a lot--helps to know that you felt similarly. I do feel quite the beachball, but everyone says I'm not all that big. But I am tired, that's for sure...

It's so darn cold around here, too, I'm thinking that it might be a nice idea to wear some "elegant trousers and blouse"...Good idea! I do want it to be something to remember, not dread. My best friend (whom I haven't laid eyes on in 9 years) is flying in from NYC and I'm ecstatic about that--but even a bit of me wants to be "pretty" for her! The last time she saw me, I weighed 100 lbs!!!

You are such a darling, Mel--and my husband called earlier today to say that I'd received a package from a wee bird on "Anne's Island"--it's awaiting me at home....I wonder WHO it's from!?

That way you are comfortable and everyone else is too...Maybe something cute like that, you can stay in your pjs and slippers....Make is somthing so that you can have fun and be comfy.....

You should just go as comfy as you can. My goodness girl, you're so almost ready to give birth. Who cares if you go to your own shower comfortable. And they should know if any of them have ever been pregnant that finding something "elegant" when your 9 monthe along is a little too much to ask. Pants and a pretty flowing nice blouse is perfect with nice FLAT comfy shoes, too.

Just have fun and enjoy. Kris

You could go the artsy route & paint your naked bod in all sorts of designs like you are ready for the pregnant Vogue issue. Just kidding, but hey I couldn't resist!
I know you will look absolutely adorable cause with you there is no other way.
I say black slacks, a cute white top, some neat jewelry & a cool scarf. You will be the cutest one there; I am sure.

Hey, I like that idea! Who would know???? Give the old Hyde Parkers something to chat about!

I appreciate all your kind words...I'm going to go up to the Mimi store this evening, and try to find some pants and a top. I will switch my "focus" a bit, and perhaps be more successful. My husband says I look beautiful and that I look like I'm carrying a human and not a manatee (which, believe me IS actually a compliment from him--he's O-D-D), and I appreciate that...but then, he sorta has to say that, doesn't he?

lol..I love it!! carrying a manatee..now thats love!! :) ROFL...isnt it funny how our hubby says things that are meant just for us. ;) When we are expecting we just dont realize what a job we have. Its all fun ooh im having a baby and then man am i tired and then boy i wish this was over already, but what a awesome calling to be able to carry a little person and send out all the pregnancy lovelies with our faces glowing and our silky growing hair and nails and lovely swollen ankles. As soon to be mommies, we are a temple of feminity no matter how much we feel like lumpy bumps..lol
WEAR IT GIRLFRIEND!!

I hope you were able to find something comfortable. With each of my three children I felt huge at the end, I really felt like I could understand what a beached whale feels like, especially when I was trying to get out of bed. But looking back on pictures I wasn't really THAT big, just very obviously pregnant. Remember, you aren't fat, you're pregnant! There is a difference. Pregnant women always look radiant and beautiful, we just don't always feel that way.

My daughter is so preggy......she is going to the hospital Sunday, and the doctor will break her water and hopefully the labor will begin. This is their third child. A boy. Two girls came first. I will have them while she is in the hospital so it is up to me to keep them busy and happy while mommy and daddy are busy themselves.

Watching her waddle and try to be comfortable certainly brings me back to my own pregnancy, and Violet, I think all very pregnant have an elegance all their own. Best wishes to you!

You know the party if for you. So why not be comfortable and go in something that you feel fits. I know much doesn't fit right know and I hated the last few weeks before giving birth. I must say nothing really fit me quite right either. If you don't want to find a dress then don't. I kind of like the PJ thing. Wished I thought of that when I had my shower just before the birth of my first. I could just see my MIL face. She would have done it if I asked though.

Thanks so much, girls! I feel a great deal better--I knew I could count on gals who have dealt with the same feelings to "get it"....I'm really pretty tiny (considering) but I've just been feeling a bit under the weather lately--mostly because my sleep has been limited and I've had some rotten arthritis-type pain in my fingers (which has only come on in this 3rd trimester) and I feel like I'm a hundred!

I did find a nice dress today, which is very comfortable, and very pretty--I did try on all types of blouses and pants, and skirts and whatnot, but I'm sortof in between sizes, and some things just DON'T fit right anymore!

I took the whole day for me, while my husband and my fil painted the nursery (it looks like keylime pie!), and I bought the dress, a really cute outfit for our girl at a lovely little children's store called Janie and Jack, and I bought some "thank you notes" and "thank you" gifts for both mil's and sil at Crabtree & Evelyn--they were having an incredible sale--and I felt really carefree and girly, which is rare for me. I'm not a shopper, and I'm hardly girly. But today was a good day, so thank you

hi kentucky sweetie from texas. i just had to read up on what is going on with ya.
i just imagine as someone else here has said that you look wonderful as a pg farmgirl.
i am wondering about the pain in your hands/fingers and wonderfing if you are having some swelling there. if ya do a little retrograde massage it should help. do it whenever ya think about it and ya cant do it too much.
you just put your hands up in front of your face(above heart level) and "pretend" to put on gloves and PRESS the fingers of the gloves downward. that helps to press the swelling down and out of the hands...
if it is swelling it should help relieve some bit of it.
i hope you enjoy your baby shower and the visit with your friend.
enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, sweet febvi

Hi, Vi! Love Lisa's suggestion! Be Bold! I sent you the vintage baby book last Friday - I hope you like it....I think the old illustrations are so pretty. There's a Christmas book in there from Wilma, too. The blouse and slacks idea would be my suggestion, too. Let us know how it all goes. You, yourself are elegant! :D And you and Violet together? Well, you're two of my favorite people! Just relax and enjoy it. It's all about YOU, girl!
