My Nanna, when she turned 45, majorly overhauled her house. They had a little money and she wanted her house just so. Now, this was back in the 1960's when she did this. I remember her telling me stories about how she wanted a more simple life and I now realize, my gosh, I am just like her!! HA!! Only I am 34!!! 
She repainted everything, decluttered majorly, her decore was simple but chic, overhauled her wardrobe to nice but inexpensive outfits. I remember her closet was the size of my now hall closet and both she and my Papa had all their clothes and shoes in there. She loved to wear mules all the time!! If she didn't like something, she loved to find it a "new" home with someone else or donate it. She was ruthless but in a loving way. I remember she donated some of her mother's dishes- it was about 8 pieces that had survived over the years but was in a bright orange and blue pattern that she really didn't like. She remembers her Mother and not the things she had. Very much how I am!!! She had a beauty routine she stuck too and got rid of what was not working. She loved expensive creams and having her hair done and always kept her toes polished.
They really inspire me to this day even though they have been gone over 20 years now. It is amazing where we draw our inspiration from.

Aw Heather, I'd love to hear more stories. That was a perfect lil story:) Thanks for sharing. I am now doing that myself and I'm 26. I"M SICK OF EXCESS and living and not enjoying ALL that I have. I'm really hibernating from like the media and all the materialistic "nasties". I am way more calm when I can manage what I have. This point I have enough for a small third world school or village. I actually was thinking about finding/starting a charity that takes used things and gives them to those in third world. Like clothes, towels, blankets, notepaper, pens, paper, etc. I have enough to donate!

Oh Bridget!! That would be wonderful.
Yes, I am onto such a new stage in my life that I needed to freshen things up a bit.
I didn't have many positive women in my life, but my Nanna impacted me big time. She was an impeccable, gracious woman with a sense of humor that was one part feisty and one part truth!!! HA!!!
They lived in the house my Papa built from the ground up. When they were first married, they lived in their garage while they saved up enough money to build a home and added onto the home over the years. My Nanna worked at a GE Plant and was really a ground breaker in woman working in the 1940's and 1950's. They lived without excess but she made the best dang food in Upstate New York that I can remember. Papa was an awesome gardener to say the least and I truly believe that man is now a Saint. He was patient, calm, friendly, always looking to have a good time and love to ride his bike and go "shopping" at the dump. He would take my Nanna to the mall weekly to get her hair done and grab a snooze in the kids play area. The kiddos loved him and he had a lot of adopted "grandchildren'. He loved to smoke his pipe and rock in his chair and he was always wearing his slippers. He believed in not snacking (he never did such a thing growing up on a farm and being poor, you ate 3 bigs meals) and he loved his Lipton Ice Tea and water. Baked goods were his downfall. Such memories!!! : )

Heather that is great that you have good memories :) It really makes you think that My Grandparents did it so why cant I ? I was greatful enough to have had my great grandparents around while I was little. My grandma was a school cook and everything she made was wonderful and she made it look so easy LOL they had a garden and always canned and she made everything homemade. i miss them so much i wish my children where able to have met them :) i can always tell them all the stories!! your stories were nice heather :)
