I thought everyone washed their pot holders from time to time. But I was at a friend's house and noticed that hers could stand up by themselves. She said she made them in high school. OK That would be about thirty years ago in her case. That's a lot of food and grease build up. But it seemed to work for her. No typhoid in the house anyway. So I thought maybe I'm the odd one.

I wash mine every once in awhile too with the towels. I can't imagine letting them go for 30 years! I'm surprised your friend would even touch them at this point!

shoot..lol..I wash my potholders straight from the store. Im always terrified Im going to light something on fire. Of course, multiple potholders have gone out in glory in this way in my kitchen. I was them every so often and change to different ones.
I can't imagine 30years!! I'm suprised none of hers have gone out in flaming glory!!LOL
hugs!

I wash mine at least once a week. If they fall on the floor or something- ick! They could pick up some dog hair or something that could fall into my food! YUCK YUCK YUCK!

Does anyone here not have potholders? I used to but my kids turned them into puppets and for about three years now I just use a towel to handle hot things.

I use potholders but don't like the oven mitts. They are uncomfortable and I am afraid I'll drop something. I wash the potholders when they look dirty??

Oh, ick. I wash mine all the time. Just toss them in with towels and hang them on the line like everything else. I cannot even imagine how bad those "never-been-washed-in-thirty-years" potholders smell. Ack. I am gagging just thinking about it.

Potholders and oven mitts are two different things. But, yup I wash mine too. But, not often just cause I don't use them often. We live in a small apartment, IE not much space. So most our food goes on top of the stove any way when it comes out of the oven. Our table is almost too small to have our plates we eat from on it, let alone dishes of food. So the stove top/range, doesn't need potholders, lol so I rarely use them. When I go to friends homes though where I am bringing hot dishes, I use braided casserole holders more then hot pads for that too. But, I wash my casserole holders a LOT!

Sounds like a candidate for some record book, i bet that potholder could stand up. It could probably be used as an incendiary device. i wash my potholders every couple of weeks. I just found a little stash of aprons that need to be washed. I don't remember getting them, so it must have been a while ago. Alsxzo discovered lots of little linen face towels and some old plain muslin feed sacks. i keep hunting through things in hopes of locating a quilt I misplaced about five years ago, it is a Lone Star, I call it the Tarzan lone Star, because i put a little leopard print fabric in it. Nothing obvious, jeez I woulddn't want to make anything TACKY!

Sorry Nancy Jo, just blathering, my son has been on my computer all day so I just need to unload a few bits of something. I love the embroidery you are doing. I love the kitty one you sent me. it is hanging in my pantry, and when i can figure out how to post a picture again i will. You do such a great job. I have spent the last two hours trying to crochet a potholder. Don't ask me why, I just was trying to recreate a very simple one I just unearthed. After three starts I finally got the right hook, very very tiny. I think this will be a very long evening, but I do enjoy messing around with the thread.

Well, when I moved in to this home with my DH [he lived here for a while, it was just him and his son]...about 3+ years ago....I found pot holders and oven mitts that greeted me with a standing ovation right on top the counter!!! EW! It was funny.....I had to soak them for a day and a half before I was able to through them in the washer..

I've only got a couple of actual pot holders, and more often I just use a dish towel. But yes, when I get them dirty I toss them right in the wash.

I guess if the potholders were never washed they wouldn't wear out so fast.
