I've had a cold for a week and I woke up in the night last night with an earache - I haven't had one in 45 years, but I sure remembered what they felt like when I woke up with one. Now the other ear is completely blocked solid, no sound at all, and the first one that had the earache is discharging a clear fluid. I know I need to go to the doc, but this is sunday and I can't even call til tomorrow. Anyone have any good ideas to relieve the pain and help the blockage until I get to the doc? Thanks!

Get some hydrogen peroxide- just the 50 cent brown bottle and pour straight into the ear. We always did this growing up. If it is too cold, put the whole bottle with the lid on and let it gently warm up in warm water first.

Your ear will foam and bubble like crazy, but the peroxide with bubble out the blockage and even help kill germs too. You might want to do it twice a day for a few days. Ear cleaning fluid that you get a the store has hydrogen peroxide in it so our family doctor always said "save your money and buy the brown bottle"

I have had ear aches they are not fun.. You might try : Apply heat (e.g. a warmed towel)warm heating pad.or hot water bottle.
2. Decongest: take decongestants and use nasal-sprays
Hydrogen peroxide dripped in your ear may help too.. then lay on the ear . let it drain out. apply heat. I hope it helps..But go to the Dr. Monday

Well I put the hydrogen peroxide in and boy did it bubble. I still can't hear out of the one ear though - I think there's fluid behind the ear drum - probably can't do much for that at home. Thanks ladies - I knew I could count on you for a suggestions!

Hi Sherri-

The Hydrogen peroxide might help dry up some of the fluid behind the ear drum or it might now, but it will keep working on the gunk. We usually laid on our sides and let it bubble away for about 5-10 minutes at a time. I hope it helps for you!

Put some warm lotion on your hands and massage your toes, top and bottom, and the ball of your foot up to between your toes in a clockwise direction. Do each foot, but not for very long. Then, have someone massage behind your ears clockwise, right under where the little cup part is. (I don't know the correct term for that part of the ear!) They will have to lift it up a bit to get the right spot. You should feel yourself having to swallow frequently. Then, suck on something sour- a lemon drop, a lemon slice, anything really tart. Drink lots of water and then get to the doctor tomorrow. :) Hope this helps.

I couldn't get in to my regular doc today so they sent me to urgent care. The doctor there said I had double ear infections and dysplasia (?) of my tubes. I couldn't hear much of what he was saying so I thought I'd look that up online when I got home. My bp was way up though - he wasn't happy about that. I never thought about it - I'd been taking regular cold pills for a week - a no no when you have high bp. He prescribed penicillin and Coricidan HBP - for people with high blood pressure and said if my hearing doesn't come back by the end of the antibiotic to go to my regular doc and have him check it out. HOpefully it will help soon - I'm tired of feeling like my head is under water!! I saw my daughter today and I asked her "Am I talking really loud?" she said I was talking so low she could hardly hear me, but it sounded deafening inside my head!!

OH, it's Thursday and still no luck at getting my hearing back in the one ear. It is driving me crazy!!!! Called the doctor back but I can't get in for a week. Imagine having one ear full of water for over a week - that's what it feels like. OK, I'm done ranting - sorry, had to get it out!

Poor thing. I know you must be miserable. Try to keep busy if you can stand it. It'll make the time go by faster.

I am so sorry you are going through this. My youngest DD always had ear aches and still cannot hear too good now.

For my grandkids when they have any ear pain now, I use olive oil and garlic drops. I got it at the health food store, but you could probably make some at home. They smell like garlic bread!! It really works for pain, though. I sure wish I had known about this when my DD was younger. I hate the antibiotics and the drops.

Hope your feeling better really soon.

Kris

I'm really starting to worry about what's wrong with my ear. When I woke up this morning, it felt funny so I touched it and it was full of blood and I still can't hear out of it. I've never had an ear bleed before. I have one more day of my amoxicillin left, but it really doesn't seem like it's done any good. Plus, I'm really weak and spacey feeling. I have a doctor appointment for Thursday, but I was hoping to be feeling a little bit better by then. My doc is about 45 miles away - not looking forward to driving down there if I'm not feeling any better. Has anyone ever had this before? It's something new for me.

Have you called the doctor? That doesn't sound good, Sherri. Is the antibiotic all you're taking? You should really call the doctor. They could at least put your mind at ease instead of worrying about it. It may be normal to be doing this. So call!

Let us know, ok? Kris

Sherri-

I agree! Call the doctor! Inner ear things can do weird things to your balance and such- but bleeding, feeling weak and lack of concentration all sounds scary!

I hope you are feeling better by now..if not, or next time....try lying with that ear on a hot water bottle covered with a cotton dish towel for at least a half hour....i did that last year (remembering relief from earaches when I was a kiddo)...it eased the stuffy feeling and pain, and allowed it to drain a bit...that was kind of a turning point...and it got better from then on...

When I called my doc yesterday, the nurse told me to go to Urgent Care - so I did last night. They said my infections were NO better - even after a course of Amoxicillin and prescribed erythromyacin (sp?). I'll go get that filled this morning and hope it perks me up really soon. I'm tired of being sick! Thanks all for your concern and suggestions - they really help.
