A friend of mine just told me that she has been doing this 2/week for the past 2 years. She had looked into it while working full time. Now that she is able to be home with children, she has more time available, and can supplement the family income this way. Though donating to help others is a good thing, do you have any opinions on the long term health effects on the donating person?

If you take good care of yourself it shouldn't hurt the donator. However my old neighbor didn't take care of herself (Not drinking water, smoking, drinking alcohol all the time, starvation dieting) and donating was really hard on her.

| Hi Ann, I give plasma every two weeks and have done it for about a year now. I have never had any problem with it and I always feel good about doing something for a person that needs it (most often cancer patients) I don't give large amounts of money to charities so I consider it a huge donation as it does take about 2 hours time and plasma is valued at $1000.00! I have also asked several times about the side effects of giving and it looks like the worst thing for me may be scar tissue on my right arm as I can't give out of my left. Good luck on deciding what to do...... |

It may depleat your immmunity especially this time of year too.
I had thought about it while in college, but was talked out of it someone who didn't want me risking being sick all the time.
Has this been a problem?
What kind of $$ are you getting if I may ask? |

I worked in a plasma center for about a year as the phlebotomist. You need to stay VERY hydrated to donate plasma a couple times a week. You should also eat a little something earlier in the day before donating. I don't know what the going rate is these days.
You go through your intake process which can sometimes be a while depending on how crowded it is. They will check you blood levels and tell you if you are ready to donate. Back in the day..... When you donated the phlebotomist will have you seated in a recliner (most likely) and they will have you donate a pint of blood (just like the red cross) BUT then you blood goes back to the lab and the techs process it for the plasma but leave the red blood cells to be given back to you. After processing, the phlebotomist mixes your red blood cells with saline solution and gives it back to you. Then you do it again! It takes a while (could be a coulple hours) and you stay connected to your IV the whole time, so there is just one stick. Bring your ipod and something good to read. NOWADAYS---I believe that you get to have the whole shebang done right next to you with a handy little machine that separates it right there!
(Wow...I feel old) THAT's kinda cool. Certainly takes out a chunk of the risk of tech error.
Plasma gets replaced in your system pretty quickly and you can donate twice every 7 days with just a day in between. I remember we had a wide variety of people donating...everyone from homeless to elderly to college students...and with the same wide variety of reasons! It was certainly an interesting job. |

As a person who can't donate due to a bleeding disorder ( not much clotting factor in me) it is very important for people to donate my husband does it all the time because he has three daughters who have the same issues I do so with 4 people in his family that may need large amounts of blood at any point in time it is very much a concern for him. Also stay hydrated actually donating blood is good for the body if you have a healthy system as it requires the body to replace the blood given which gives the body new healthy bloody to work with. If I could donate blood I would because I can't I am grateful to those who can. This is such an imprtant thing to me that I have agreed to be in a magazine article for self magazine that comes out some time in the next 6 months about woman with bleeding disorders and taking control of them and not letting it or the doctors control you.
