i have just discovered the site , magazine this past week and love it. i live in north texas on 16 acreas with my husband and various farm animals. i hope to have an organic cut flower, herb, vegetable operation, and also earn some keep by doing crafts. i mostly do recycled art/crafts and would really love to hear from other farm girls who like to do crafts and have some experience spinning and working with angora goats. thanks, frannie

love this magazine. live on a small 16 acrea farm in the red river valley, does that mean i am a valley girl? we have a small herd of angora goats, aracuna chickens, an interest in herbs and cut flowers.bluegrass music and want to learn to spin fiber. i'm a crafter who specializes in recycled art/crafts.we are cat lovers and unfortunatley we often have more that our share of castoff cats, but we try to find them good homes and are able to care for about 10 here at the farm. any farm who finds themselves without a good mouser is welcome to apply for placement of one of our loving kitties. currently have 5 yellow tabbies that need good homes.

Welcome, Frannie!

You will love the people who post here - it gets better and better as you begin to know the people who visit this site routinely.

I am going to be gone to a cabin in North Carolina beginning tomorrow and staying for a week. I can do without the TV, but I am going to miss reading what is going on at the Farmgirl Connection!

Glad to have you on this site and I look forward to hearing about your farm. There are many of us here interested in crafts and making beautiful things with our hands from nature's bounty. We have weavers, spinners, knitters, apron makers, quilters, photographers, artists, and most of us love animals, too. Kindred spirits!

Hi there!! Sounds like you are going to fit right in...Welcome!!
I have had at least one angora goat for the past 8 years. Just have one little doeling right now. I love to spin and knit. Do you have colored angoras or all white? I have only ever had white ones, but would like to get a colored one sometime.

ok, i am pretty new at this chat thing, i feel like i am sending this message back to me, but my intent is to thank you for the welcome and i hope you get this. i have 4 goats, 2 are white, 1 is champagne and 1 is black. they all have blue eyes and they are all beautiful. one is the mother, 2 children and one is an orphan that i bottle fed. they are very sweet. i want to learn to spin and would appreciate any advise about that. i hope one day to have a spinning wheel, but i feel intimidated about buying one without any knowledge. so i have been thinking of a drop spindle, any words of wisdom on that subject would be appreciated, and thanks again for the warm welcome. frannie

okay, here we go again, i am hoping that i am responding to your warm welcome, but i am not the most computer savy, so it sort of looks like i am sending this back to myself.???
anywho, i appreciate the welcome and think this is a geat site. i am interested in crafts and would like some guidance on spinning....but mostly its just so nice to know there are other women out there trying to live their dreams. most of my crafts are related to salvage goods that people give to me. i make cedar stuffed pin cushions, because someone gave me alot of beautiful fabric samples that were very small, and they are cedar filled because their is a cedar mill around the corner with all the free cedar sawdust you can carry off. i also make nail aprons out of vintage linnens and designer samples, i call them "domestic goddess aprons". they are a tribute to my dad who was a carpenter and early on tied a little nail apron around my waist and taught me the value of an extra set of pockets. well , i do blather, but thanks again for the welcome and please let me know about your crafts and news. thanks, frannie

What a neat idea Frannie. do you sell them? I collect old lines too and all kinds of antique stuff. But my greatist love is linens. I would love to purchase an apron and a pin cushion.

Jeannie, I know what you mean, I such bad withdrawal this past weekend. I missed everyone! We were at our little cabin (ie. trailer) in Wisconsin over Labor Day. I wish I had a laptop!!!!

I collect old linens and old dishes. Your little aprons sound wonderful..what a sweet idea!!!
I mostly knit and sew, but spin when I can and crochet, rug hook and needlepoint and embroider when I find time. I sort of go in phases of what craft I am doing the most. Right now it is knitting and cross stitch, but with Christmas coming on it will be other things. I love to make soap and plan to start making cheeses with my goats milk.
How neat that your angoras are blue eyed. My little angora doe, Pearl is very small and was born early and rejected by her mom. She fit in a shoebox when my friend brought her to me to bottle raise. She is sure she is NOT a goat and I just love her. She was born in June 2003. I will be breeding her in October hopefully to my friend's charcoal buck.
I bet the champagne color is so pretty!!
speaking of spinning..you just have to jump in there. Maybe there is a guild near you where you can borrow or rent a wheel. I found it so hard to use a drop spindle at first that I think I would have given up if I didn't get my wheel soon. I traded a rug I hooked for my first and only wheel (an Ashford Traditional) about 11 or 12 years ago. I love it. Spinning mohair is a little harder than wool, but not much. One of my favorite yarns is 50% wool, 50% mohair.

i do sell them. i have a small booth in an antique mall in the closest town, and i put my crafts in there. i will try to send you a picture of the aprons and the pin cushions. each one is a little different. the pincushions can be round , or square and i make a funny small pincushion out of old burr oak acorns. burr oak acorns are large acorns, i keep the top part that looks like a hat and i make a new part out of cloth, then put it on a pretty ribbon so you can hang it on the wall, in your closet, or wear it around your neck when your sewing. i love going to garage sales and redoing some of the cast offs i find and reselling them in my booth. my husband says i have a weakness for the object that needs the most work or the object that needs the most repair, and if i can find an object that is heavy and in total disrepair i am in heaven. of course i dont quite see it that way, but i cant totally deny it.
i have always enjoyed antiques and crafting, and have tried to incorporate that into the farm for a little income. thanks for the interest in the aprons and pin cushions, i am so glad i found this site. frannie

thanks for the info. i wish we did have some kind of guild here but the closest i can find is about 350 miles away. i am about 70 miles north of dallas/ft.worth and we dont have much in our closest town, except a walmart. i do know another lady here in my area who has done some spinning and has a wheel. she has offered to let me come over one day and she will let me try out on her wheel. it is really nice to find kindred spirits. i have shaed the site with this friend cause i think she would just love it.
do you still hook rugs? i think that is a beautiful craft. my sister does that and i have always had an interest in it, but i try to stay focused on a couple of things and i have always thought that rug hooking was a little beyond me. here in texas, there is a lot of interest in rug hooking in central texas. i have really spent more time with sewing , quilting and the farm, or the dream of the farm.
it seems that as i have gotten older and have retired from the working world i finally have time to pursue some of my loves.
i do sell my crafts in a mall in the closest town, nothing real grand, but i usually make a small profit at the end of the month.
i hope to learn alot from this site cause i seem to learn better from other folks than i do from books. i am so happy to found this site. thanks for all the welcomes and interest. frannie

Welcome Frannie! You will find many kindred spirits here at this website! I enjoy fixing things too... I think it's a mentality that the younger generations do not appreciate.

Just a little tip for you on posting. No need to do a reply or reply with quote... just type in the quick reply box below the last posting... everyone reads things in sequential order anyway... If you want to get fancy and choose fonts and colors, then you need to use the reply to topic category... but no need to repeat original messages. Hope this helps you get acquainted with us a bit easier.

Howdy Frannie from another North Texas farmgirl. I have only lived out in Parker County for about 10 months but also hope to eventually have a section of my land planted in cut flowers and also antique roses for my own pleasure. Right now I am out here with 12 dogs, 3 indoor cats and 2 gerbils! Have also added 5 barn cats to my family since I moved out here--already have 2 orange tabbies--good luck with them and all of your endeavors.

this is the second year we have been and it is alot of fun. they hold it once a year to make money for their school year. the food is interesting, they have a quilt auction, an antique auction, furniture auction and fam machinery and farm animal auction. it is held at the farm of one of the amish families in the community. it is just interesting on a lot of different levels.
i enjoy auctions and garage sales, estate sales cause i love to find treasures and fix them up or resell them. i dont know its, just like a treasure hunt. i cant really justify going if i dont resell cause i really have just about everythin i need and my house is very small, rather more like an apartment. it is about 800 square feet and has a porch that is 800 square feet, so it cant realy hold alot of stuff. some of the locals have told me that orignially it was 2 itinerant farmer houses put together and that at first it was a little poker camp in the woods, but i think it has adjusted to being a home and i like it very much. it was a long journey to get here, iwas over 40 and divorced when i first came here, but it is home and i love it. now i would just like to be able to suppliment my income here doing something that i love. frannie

Greetings:

I just discovered Mary Janes Farm yesterday while in Barnes and Noble. What you guys have done... simply takes my breath away. It has been my dream to own and live on a farm. I am a divorced African American female passionately interested in organic farming. At age 49 my two children are grown and I have decided to go for it. I am currently taking classes for "new farmers" sponsored by the Connecticut Farm Bureau. I never realized how many women are involved in working and healing our lands. I am humbled and in awe of all that MaryJanesFarm offers. I especially love the Farm School teaching aspects.

Peace and Blessings

As always,
Pat

Thank you Clare and Eileen for the warm welcome.

I look forward to learning, sharing and growing. I am moving in with a dear friend who has a 15 acre horse farm. She has managed the farm alone, after divorce, 10 years ago. There are currently six horses, four are boarders. I love horses and know nothing about them. Most of the land is dominated by the horses but there is a small garden in place. I have already invisioned ways to increase growing space.

Peace and Blessings

As always,
Pat
