I am 20 weeks pregnant and just found out recently that I have several gallstones. The surgeon(of course) is pushing for surgery after the baby is born but I prefer to try something more natural first. Any ideas to use after the baby is born? Anything that I can start doing safely now?

Tina, I can understand your hesitating when it comes to surgery. I have heard of a medicine you can take that supposed to help you pass a gallstone. Can't remember just what it was called, but I spoke to a gal I worked with just before getting my gall bladder removed. This medicine put her in a lot of pain and made her really sick for days. She did finally pass the stone but you can develop new stones later on.
I really don't want to make you worry or scare you, but gallstones if let go too long can also be very dangerous. My stepdad let his go way too long. By the time he went in for surgery, his gallbladder was very enlarged, had attached to his stomach and liver. His expected 2 hour surgery took 10. He made it through surgery but died shortly after, due to what we believe was an allergic reaction to morphine.
I went in about a year ago to have my gall bladder removed. I fought with mine for about 7 years. I was going to try to hold out a few more months but my gall bladder told me differently. When I finally had the surgery done my doc told me that the gall bladder was already enlarged and had started to leak. He told me I was very lucky that it had not ruptured. The ultrasound showed one stone about medium size. When the doc took it out, there were several other stones and the one was larger than expected. I was still able to have the minor surgery (4 small incisions, sorry can't even begin to spell it). I spent a couple of days in the hospital. He didn't like the looks of my liver, so he kept me a little longer to run more tests. My friends and her sil gall bladder surgeries were same-day-surgery. I was off work for three weeks. I took an extra week cause I wanted to be sure I was good and healed up before I went back to doing laundry at the nursing home I worked at.
I really do hope that you will be able to find a natural meathod that is safe and be sure to let all us know if you do. Just please be careful and don't let it go too long.

Dear blessedhomemaker,
Please don't be upset or worried over get this surgery. it is a very easy surgery and you will recover from it fast. if you have it early it will just be the laprascopy (sp) kind which you will only have 4 little incisions. If you want they may have to give you the surgery that they really have to open you up and do major surgery. so please just have it when it can be the easier way.
I have had it done and I was back on my feet very quickly and back to work.

Tina, I just was hospitalized the middle of October with a gallbladder attack. The doctor said I had 4 small stones. He didnt suggest sugery. He gave me Nexum and told me not to eat fried foods. I dont eat fried foods. I dont eat red meat or pork. My Mother had gallbladder surgerty about 26 yrs ago. I am sure it is genetic. Anyway. I found something on-line that said it would disolve the stones. I think I will try them if I have anymore problems. I can feel when the stones move...Now I knw what I was feeling before. I will look up what I found and reply agsain

I found something you should read. I also am a Massage Therapist and i understand you do need your gallbladder...
Gallbladder surgery increases your risk of bowel cancer! Why? After removing your gallbladder, acidic bile (over 3 cups of bile per day) will constantly drip into your digestive system. The continuous drip will even result in regular diarrhea. And finally, removing your gallbladder may even lead to high blood cholesterol which will result in the silent killer of heart disease.
So what should you do? Before signing any papers, you might consider a couple natural gallstones cures (5 simple cures below) and keeping your NEEDED gallbladder.
Why you NEED your gallbladder!

Hey Tina! First of all congrats on the baby! As if pregnancy isn't uncomfortable enough, gallstones couldn't be any fun! I had gallstones when I was 19 and in college 2000 miles away from home. I got diagnosed at Christmas and begged to put off the surgery until the end of the school year which was 5 months later. I have to say for me, that was a terrible decision. The night before finals it ruptured! The airline didn't want to let me fly home but I did thanks to some pull from a family friend in the industry. Long story short, it had imbedded in my liver and made a mess of me when it detonated! 6 weeks later I came home. I always did do things in a big way! LOL! The point is I would say do what you can right now and relax and enjoy the pregnancy. Then after the sweet new baby is here think about what will heal you the quickest so as to be fully present for your family. I'm in the have the lapro-scopic side, but know God will lead you to do the best thing.

I had my gallbladder out in 1995. I have had a few bouts with diarreha which I know are from not having the gallbladder but all in all that is it. The pain that I had before it came out was horrible and I have a high tollerance to pain. right now before the baby comes avoid eating anything of high fat content that will help a lot with any pain. But getting it out is not a problem and living without it really is no big deal either.. Your body adjusts. Do what you feel is right but don't let it go to long cause it can cause other problems. JMHO

I had to have my gallbladder out to, same reason. You have to be very careful with gallstones because they can travel to other organs and cause alot of damage. my brother almost died because he had one lodged in his bladder or colon, forget which. I tried other alternatives first like not eating spicy food, but the docs never gave me any drugs or alternative methods. I felt like I was having a heart attack and the gall bladder had to come out. I had 1 gall stone and it was bigger than a golf ball, they almost had to cut me open to do get it out but thank god they didnt. Good luck to you!

Oh yes Tina, like some of the other gals I have bouts of diarreha too. But I have learned it's all in what I eat. Foods high in fat and sugar will fly straight through me. And I do mean go quickly. If anyone is in the bathroom they will be removed by force if they do not get out when I say. But that has been the only negative effect that I've experienced due to lack of a gall bladder.
BTW Congrats on the pregnancy. Be sure to show us pics as soon as new lil bundle of joy gets here!

I have no experience w/ any of this. Had a very young friend who had hers removed 8 or so years ago. Not sure if she went back to her beer and pizza or not.
Have also watched a t.v. program where someone had their gallblader removed via accu -puncture! WOW! That was pretty cool to see
Wonder how the recovery pain was handled and if there wss much at all. Looked like a tiny incision had been made and that was it.
Hope you get it looked after soon though and congrats on you new addition |

The recovery from the surgery was painful and hard to recover from. Yes you have 3- 4 incisions. Although they dont cut you all the way open you still have pain afterward, the 3rd day after is always the hardest. It is still major surgery. I had to have help for the first 3 - 4 days afterward to even get out of bed.

Sometime after the surgery I could eat anything I wanted but to this day almost everything I eat goes right through me. I gained weight after too. I dont know why but I did. I found that because the food went and goes right through me I am always hungry. Nothing stays in me long anough, youwould think I would be skinny because of it but thats not the case. *sigh*
