Hello,

Does anyone on this forum allow non-farmers to visit their farm in any positive way (roadside stand, annual open house, on-farm cooking classes, B&B, etc.)?

I'm writing a series of articles for AcresUSA and for an upcoming book on how farm visits, or ag-tourism, can help farms and rural areas.

I'm looking for people to interview.

I had my own small farm years ago, and am now reviving it, and found that our annual pumpkin patch was very enjoyable and very good for word-of-mouth promotion.

Thanks!
Barb

I haven't met Barb in person but she's well known and has a great reputation. Her book is awesome. It's sitting on my desk.

You're welcome to come out to visit me next summer, Barb. If Maine fits into your schedule I can let you know what's happening when so that you can figure out when the best time to come would be. You're welcome to stay here at the house with us.

greetings from No Worries! Barb, you would be more than welcome to come visit our little farm. We are 20 miles west of Spokane in the west plains area. Next time you are in the area, do let me know. My amazing husband gave me a tractor for my 40th birthday a few weeks ago so I'm convinced that the sky is the limit for what I can accomplish now. I have high hopes of putting in a 'you pick' flower garden and pumpkin patch as well as a 7 circuit walking labrynth. the latter is a project I've wanted to do for years and years and I'm really feeling called to make it happen. I haven't solicited any interested community members but will be doing that pretty soon!! It is really something to look forward to.. hope to hear from you!
warm regards, Julia

You people inspire me SO much by who you are and what you do. Robin, Maine is a destination my new wonderful husband and I would love to take on sometime. Meanwhile I'll get to know your farm more via your website. Julia, two of our grown children live in Spokane and we visit frequently, and as we restore my 5-acre Island Meadow Farm here in the Pacific Northwest, we also want to add a labyrinth! I recently did a cover story in AcresUSA on another small garlic farm in Spokane, maybe you guys next.

If I can't get to you in person in time, I'll see what I can get from you at least via e-mail.

Barb- If you make it over to the Spokane area, we would love to have you visit us! My mom is a big fan of AcresUSA! And she has been for as long as I can remember. I think she even talks about AcresUSA in her book.

Our Fourth of July Farm Fair will be July 1st and 2nd this year and we will have all kinds of antique, craft and food vendors! As well as you-pick and lots of fun farm music and games. We will also be scheduling quite a few different hands-on farm classes during our Pay Dirt Farm School www.maryjanesfarm.org/about/paydirt/. And we'd love for you to come stay at our B&B www.maryjanesfarm.org/bb/ too.

There are certainly lots of beautiful little farms in the area, if you make it down this way!

Meg, AcresUSA really is special, isn't it? I would love to interweave you and your mom into this article series and book project. With luck, we can make it to your farm and general farming area in person. Until then, may I send an occasional e-mail interview question to you? I probably won't start until after Christmas, most of us are swamped for the holidays.

And thanks for such a great forum. I've made some wonderful connections already, and see there's enough inspiring people and projects here to keep me writing on sustainable farming and community for eternity!
