I originally posted this question on the organic/free range turkey question, but realize it probably doesn't belong there. I apologize for the double posting.

Has anyone tried the Tofurky "turkey and stuffing"? If so how was it??

Years ago when my sons went through a vegetarian stage I bought Tofurky for them. It was very expensive then and I would classify it as edible: ) JoAnn

I've had it every Thanksgiving for the past 10 years! It is a little on the pricy side, but it's nice to have a main dish we vegetarians can make a fuss over on the holidays. No more filling up on salads and rolls at the family dinner.

As for the taste...I tell everybody who asks that it tastes a lot like school cafeteria turkey. Maybe better.

I have been vegetarian for 9 years and Tofurkey was a god-send when I found it. I too was tired of all the sides and no main dish at the holidays. It's edible I would agree and so much better if you have a tasty marinade/baste. I like the Worthington and similar brands that have "rolls" of faux-chicken and faux-turkey better. On a funny note, my in-laws ate the roll-type (not really knowing "what" it was) and liked it.

I'm surprised to hear such good reviews on it, lol. Maybe we got a bad batch of Tofurky. My family was vegan for many years (and my mother still is)...we tried it one year, and it was rubbery-chewy and tasted...funny...about the only way to put it. We've made our own tofu turkey ever since. I suppose it's a matter of personal preference, though. :)

Lol, I can post the recipe if you'd like. It's quite tasty, although I wouldn't say it tastes exactly like turkey...my father says it reminds him more of bacon. I really like it with stuffing and cranberry sauce, though. I'll pull up the recipe...

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions and ideas. My son is a vegetarian and I'm trying to cut back on eating meat myself. So I got a 75 cent off coupon. BUT now I'm waiting to see Jodi's recipe before I buy the Tofurky! Actually I eat a lot of Boca/Morningstar Farm products. Does Tofurky taste similar to their tofu chicken patties??? Sheri, I loved your story!!!

Oh, Worthington's rolls are very good with mashed potatoes and gravy -- my mouth is watering!!! I eat Morningstar and Boca products, and Tofurky doesn't compare, by my taste, anyway. If you've had Morningstar's tofu hotdogs...the rubbery texture...that is kinda similar, but it's still a different flavor.

But here's the recipe if y'all want to try it. I'm making it this year, it's so yummy!! It's not that difficult, either. :)

--> 5 lbs firm tofu, finely crumbled (I like to use a potato masher, because the finer the tofu is crumbled, the nicer the finished texture is)
--> 5 tablespoons veg. chicken flavor seasoning
--> 3 tablespoons brewer's yeast
--> 1/2 cup Bragg's Aminos (similar to soy sauce, less sodium -- I know Fred Meyer carries it)
--> 2 teaspoons sage
--> 12 to 16 cups stuffing (about 2 packages)
--> Toasted sesame oil

Mix all ingredients together except stuffing and sesame oil. Line a 12" (apprx) colander with cheese cloth. Transfer tofu mixture into colander and press in firmly. Fold the edges of cheesecloth over the top, so all the tofu is lined with the cloth. Place a bowl over the surface of the tofu, and place something heavy in bowl to weigh it down -- to press excess liquid from tofu (usually let it sit about an hour). Prep stuffing! After the tofu has set an hour, next step is to hollow out the "turkey", by scooping tofu out of colander, leaving apprx. 1" tofu on all sides (you end up with a tofu-lined colander). Pack the stuffing into the hollowed out area, and then put the extra tofu over the top to seal it in.

Place an oiled backing sheet on top of the colander, and then flip it over to set "turkey" on sheet. Remove cheesecloth. Baste with toasted sesame oil and Bragg's (this is the best part, flavor-wise, just don't over do the Bragg's, or it gets way to salty!).

Cover with foil, and bake at 400 degrees F for an hour. Remove foil, baste again, and return to oven to bake apprx. one more hour, or until deep golden brown.
