I had hoped to get my silly computer to let me post the pictures of my Tail Spun Yarn but no such luck.. I would love to hear what you think of it, if you have a chance it is on my blog - www.larkspurfunnyfarm.blogspot.com under "Selma and Son"

Now that I have another wheel spinner in the ranks we all should be having fun making art worthy yarn, try new things and showing what we have created.

Thanks for taking the time - keep those fingers and feet busy ladies.

Grace, the yarn is very beautiful! It looks very soft. I haven't had a chance to use my wheel yet, but I am going to try it tonight. My fingers are itching to check it out!

Grace, I am not sure what this is although I think it's pretty. Can you tell me more about tail spun yarn and why it's called that? Is it spun from the tips of the locks or what?

I am a wheel spinner too, Grace, not sure if you knew that. Wish I had time to spin right now....work is keeping me busy!

Hi Jami
I gathered you might have a wheel - but we need many more of us out there to keep this art alive...

Tail spun is only spun using long locks of at least five inchs or more. I have done it with wool, mohair, llama and even dog. You spin from the cut end, you have to keep those locks going only in one direction when you clip, no electric shears used here, you must have very clean fleece off the animal becuase you will not wash until the yarn is spun and then all I do is spray it with the attachment on the sink and then line dry - do not man handle it, you do not blend, you are spinning on a core, you need a wheel that will be able to handle the thickness and you need to take your time, prework is key and also a gret willingness to work at it. I only know a handful of folks who spin it - seems to be a lost art. Machine will never and I mean never be able to make this so it really is an art forum....

I spent time last night when the power was out spinning by candle light - felt surreal but wonderful..

Monica good luck with the wheel - I am hoping to get fiber on my site this week - had snow last night, no power for six hours, white out conditions and up all night checking the little ones..
Have a great day all and keep those wheels, spindals, and cards going.

How neat!! I'm thinking it would make an awesome trim strategically placed on a knit/crochet sweater or jacket.

Bonne, your right I had a weaver friend who used my tail spun on an incredible jacket that she enteried in a show at Taos Wool Festival about three years ago and won grand champion - it was a fantastic jacket and I was so excited that I had a small part in it.

Jenny, I am working like a little bee trying to catch up with farm shop orders.. great problem to have but not for you who are long distant - I promise, promise, promise some great fiber soon.

Back to work for this little bee.....

That is some wild and crazy yarn! Never saw anything like it before. But then pretty much I have only seen my own homespun! I am spinning my white fleece, trying to finish a prayer shawl. So much to do, so little time!
On a good note, I am almost done with a pair of alpaca, wool socks for my son, for Christmas. A couple more decrease rounds on the toes to go. A size 13 foot, takes a while, on size one needles. I bought this yarn from a neighbor, gosh I can't spin that fine!
Love your web site Grace, lots of interesting books listed.

I know what you mean about the foot size - when my youngest was just 14 his foot was 13 ee now I think they are 14 ee we just call him "Hobbit Foot".... I can not wait for you to share the shawl with us - I just love seeing what others are doing and the wonderful talent you all have. Good luck and keep those fingers busy.

Grace, I will have to find out what color she likes best! I know she likes earth tones! She is allergic to wool, but has heard that most people are okay with Alpaca and she knits so I want to spin her some! I think the fleeces would work especially since I have carders now! I like carding the cotton, which is good because I know have about 60 grocery bags of it!! I will let you know when I find out! How much do the fleeces run?

Yeah, I'm thinking these excuses about "being allergic to wool, so why learn to spin..."need to be squashed. There are so many other fibers to try besides wool!!
I'd like to get ahold of a source for alpaca socks for my hubby. I know I could never spin fine enough, let alone tackle knitting or crocheting socks. (too many &%^$# verbal conversations I'd have with the process).
Ok, I'm ROFL @ Stephanie!! You were being too good~Why do you fight this addiction? Submit! Submit!! hehehehee

Bonne, my sister isn't into spinning, at least not yet, but it gives me a perfectly good excuse to buy more fiber so that I can spin it for her!!!! Maybe I ought to send Stephanie a spindle and some wool with the silk thread I have for her! One way or another we will get her hooked! I am playing with my wheel this morning and it's not going too bad considering I have no idea what I am doing! I have been watching spinning videos on youtube trying to figure it out better! I sure wish the spinning shop was closer, I would just pack up and run over!

Stephanie, As Bonne said Submit! Submit!!

Bonnie, I have sold alpaca socks for many years when I belonged to the North American Alpaca Co-op we had a mill who would take a percentage of our yearly clip and turn them into socks. They where fantastic - wished the group was still together. I checked real quick on line and I do not know any of the one's listed but I will check around for you if you wish???

I just sell the yarn - I do not knit socks maybe you could do a trade or agreement with someone on this site - you know where to get the best alpaca yarn already...

Right now the starting rate is $4.50 and it goes up from there. I also have some incredible llama with silk that I will be posting very soon. I love spinning llama and silk on a long draw. It goes quickly and is dreamy......

I am trying to skein yarn today - it is my Icelandic wool lopi yarn. I finally hope to also have my wool chennile yarn on the Etsy site - it turned out incredible - I love it's feel.... Last year I had it at the open house and a lady who does locker hooking purchase the whole line - it has taken me a while to get it back on the shelves. I really need a couple of gnomes to get it all done.

Well, I'm a long time knitter, but only easy projects and big needles~lol
You'll never see anything more complicated than my favorite bootie pattern out of me. ha!
http://www.aokcorral.com/projects/how2oct2005.htm
Oh, and Steph has done drop spindling~she decided to nip it in the bud before it became truly
a "no turning back addiction". I don't know how she was able to manage that, because I sure couldn't~well, didn't try either...lol I think she'd rather focus her energy on the crocheting part.
Yes, Grace, if you find any sellers of alpaca socks, I'd be grateful. Hubs is very warm-blooded except for his feet, & intolerant to sheep's wool. I'm thinking alpaca will be just the ticket. I ought to spin some up and make a stocking cap for him just to see how it does or doesn't affect him.

Ok y'all, have you ever felt yourself being vacuumed up! ROTF Yes as Bonne said, I have spun with my drop spindle, have alot of roving and batts and locks and curls....

Well, it originally was purchased to use with my needlefelting machine that I bought....then having the wool on hand and running across a spinning site I decided I had to have a drop spindle to "just try it"..wanted to make up fun novelty pieces to use in projects....ok, so did that and then of course I started looking at all of the WHEELS and GADGETS.....

Needless to say anyone that knows me knows that I'm a gadget girl..omg, it's like an obsession to need to own and pet one of everything. I finally said, NO!!!! NO!!!! NO!!!! not a wheel until I know I'm definitely for sure heading to the mountains to my cabin (one day!) Great restraint on my part (patting myself on the shoulder..good girl...LOL)...one day though..it's coming..I feel it. :0))

So now I'm suffering along in this topic listening and looking and had a meltdown lastnight when I found Graces alpaca yarn in the "Soft Spring" colorway...that was it, I feel off the wagon..My stash was screaming for me to add this to it. LOL

So Monica I could send you some of my wool for you to spin me somemore fingering weight! Yes, Yes, Yes....(jumping up and down):0))

So now you know....I've ALMOST submitted! want be long...:0)
