These are some of the heirloom potatoes we harvested from our Square Foot-based garden this year.
This is the 9 year old boy (ds Evan) who helped grow them. You can see he needs big muscles to lift those Onaways!

Thought I'd share:) these are Onaways (white), cranberry reds and all blues. Sorry the captions are backwards - I'll do better next time!
We have already had the Onaways sliced and roasted with garlic and olive oil (super YUM), the reds as oven fries, and last night we had the blues in a Rachael Ray recipe. They are all fantastic, and everyone in my house agrees that they taste better because we grew them ourselves!

Ann-Those potatoes look wonderful and Evan is a real cutie pie :)
I've never tried growing taters before, but after seeing your harvest I just might have to try it next season.

Diana - they are so EASY! You can take any old potato, cut it into chunks (containing at least 1 eye), then plant them about 3" deep. They only need about 12" of soil, so you could even container-garden them! Check out the book All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. Since I know you are an "urban" farmer like us, you'll really appreciate it. I was able to get a copy through our library (then I bought it so I could make notes in it - it's on Amazon).

Ann-I actually have that book but unfortunately didn't get it until recently. I do plan on doing square foot gardening come spring though.

I love growing potatoes! You think nothing much is happening until fall when you start digging and find you have lots of good size potatoes! The only thing I like growing more than potatoes are pumpkins 'cuz you can see them get bigger and bigger every day. We planted some purple potatoes in 2007 but nothing came up. This year I didn't get around to planting any but darned if those purple ones didn't produce a good crop this year!

We especially enjoyed the flowers when they bloomed. I took lots of pictures of them, too.
We also grew snow peas, beets,pumpkin, zucchini, cukes, canteloupe, carrots, sweet corn and sunflowers. All in less than 200 square feet. Unfortunately, we believe that our zukes and pumpkins cross pollinated each other, so only got 5 zukes, no pumpkins and these funny looking gourd like things (we callend them Frankenstein squash). We had approx 2 doz cukes and three canteloupes. Sadly, our sunny's were knocked down by the remnants of Hurricane Ike :( But, we also got a dozen beets, and snow peas for breakfast for 2 weeks straight. In our containers we grew wheat grass, clover, and alfalfa for our bunnies. The bunnies are nice and provide fertilizer in exchange for food! We also grew marigolds, basil, lemon balm, and parsley. And, tomatoes and oregano in the front flower bed.
DS Evan is very proud of his garden. He worked very hard to get the soil mixture worked in the beds and on the planting and harvesting. DD Dayton, not pictured here, prefers watering and harvesting, although she did help with the first bed.

| Ann, I love your picture, what a cutie. I grow my potatoes in a square foot garden also. Mine didn't come out near as nice as yours. Maybe I need Evan to come help me. |

Wonderful pictures!! I never seem to get around to growing potaotoes and I really should. We go crazy with the tomatoes and peppers though. Your little guy is a cutie!!
