Grace, my eyes are getting bad for close-up work, especially when the lighting isn't so good, so I admire you spinning by candlelight! I've always heard you should be able to spin blindfolded, but not this girl! I'm a visual person.

Hey spinners, this gal at the spin-in last weekend had a wooly winder...man that thing was pretty cool, until I heard the price of it. Whoa. Grace, do you use one of these?

Glad you're back Connie and sorry for your loss.

Connie, I am sorry to hear about your brother-in-law!

Maybe once I get used to my wheel, I will have to try it blindfolded! Or at least by candle light!

Jami, Are you talking about the woolee winders that have the gears! They are expensive, but I wonder if it would pay for itself in the long run!

I admit it - I drop spin in movie theathers - also when i traveled with other ladies I would sit in the dark and spin while they all snorred up a storm. Not for everyone but it is a great way to get your fingers to do the work they are needing to do.... I do have an advanced class that we spin for about an hour with a blindfold on - it is also liberating - stops us from being so critical.

As for the Wolly Winder - I have one on my electric spinning wheel and have been considering it for my Ashford Joy but I have been spinning so long the way it is that I do not find it an issue to move my yarn on the hooks. It also takes away the ability to use the hooks as a way to increase range and ratio. I guess if you have the extra money laying around I might - everyone has to look at the budget. Also, I have folks who have issues with them slipping and catching - very frustrating.

Have a great spinning day.

Yes Monica, there are plastic gears on the Wooly Winder. I don't know on them paying for themselves...cost about 1/3 of the price of a new spinning wheel from my understanding. The yarn was perfectly even all the way on the bobbin. Mine is always a lump/bumping along as I get busy and forget to move my hook. I have a sliding hook on my Rose. Blindfolded spinning--I'm going to have to try that. It will probably put me over the edge..I'm such a control freak about my "set-up" for spinning. It won't surprise you Grace that my yarn can sometimes be overspun.

Connie so sorry to hear of your lost. I will put you on my prayer list.
I have the 4 spinning wheels and I favor my louet the most. The spools are larger and I can spin very fine yarn or very thick yarn...it was the first wheel I had so I think I favor it because I have seen the bad and the good times with it. As far as the woolee spinner, I thought about it but I feel that I will not have the control that I have moving the yarn from hook to hook. If I feel that I am not getting the twist I need and have the brake completely released, I can put the yarn behind 2 or 3 hooks or whatever it takes to get the yarn that I am trying to spin. The short of it is that I don't want to give up my control.
I spin by candle light often and listen to soft music...you will be surprised how good the yarn will look plus I can help my husband get needed sleep. My husband will watch me for a short while and be snoring soon...like sleeping pill for him.

Sarita, take a break from wool processing and take some more wheel pictures to tease me with and update your blog.
I love reading about what you all are doing.

And Monica, for pete's sake, put down the cotton carders and post a pic or 2 on your blog! I know you have some cute
kiddos to show off along with all your fiber.

OK, that's my scolding for today........;)

oh man, I ADORE My woolee winder beyond belief. I consider it worth the price and then some!!! I use it on my schacht matchless. It DOUBLED the amount of yarn I can fit on a bobbin - no lie. It just spreads the singles on the bobbin so smoothly and efficiently. It's not a necessity, but I really would not enjoy spinning as much without one, now that I have had the pleasure of HAVING one, kwim?

I spin for relaxation, pleasure, and meditational effects, so I relly love that I don't have to stop to move the hooks. no, it's not a big deal to do so, but I can really get into that "zone" well when I don't have to stop for it!

re: spinning blindfolded - i have no doubt it can be done, with practice! I used to do martial arts in the dark or blindfolded now and then - at a couple of different dojos - it just gives you an entirely different awareness of your body and surroundings. really interesting stuff. :)

Thanks for sharing about the WW...I was trying to decide between a plying bobbin, holds twice as much as regulars, or a WW...of course $$$ might make the decision but I would like to be able to make larger skeins...I usually like to make a 2-3 ply yarn and that fills up my bobbins awful quick.

Congratulations on your wheel, Monica! Hope you are getting to use it.

Ladies, I enjoyed the discussion about the woolee winder too. First I was with Grace on enjoying the process of moving the hooks but then when I heard about how it doubles what you can get on the spindle, I'm intrigued again. I also have a Schatt Matchless and that spindle fills up fast sometimes. It also limits the size of my skeins when I ply.

enjoy!
