We just got notice from our son's school that they have been notified that some of the children may have lice. (That wondeful time of year again)
Any natural treatments that anyone can suggest?
Some of those over the counter treatments at the pharmacy can cause neurological damage so am leary to use these if the need arises.
Am checking our son and so far (keeping fingers crossed), nothing has shown up in his hair. |

We have friends who used something natural. I'll find out what that was if I can reach her. So your son definitely has them? Because if he doesn't I wouldn't go through all that without being sure. You can use Lysol disinfectant for the clothing and bedding in the wash. The stuff in the brown bottle.

No our son doesn't have them yet but just looking into remedies if I need to use one.
I'm not going to go through the whole process with his hair if he doesn't have them.

| My youngest sister was part of a headlice epidemic several years ago. The lice were resistant to all the common over the counter shampoos that had worked in the past. They must have come out with new formulas by now, I guess. But at the time, nothing worked and the poor kid was constantly being scrubbed and washed with one thing after another. I think what finally did it was just plain salad oil left on her hair overnight with a shower cap (to smother the hatched insects) and then lots and lots of combing with a fine tooth comb (to remove all the eggs). |

Someone recommended on here to get the Coconut shampoo (white rain or someone makes it) and use that. Also, a rinse with apple cider vinegar and then smoothering with the salad oil and a cap. Sigh...

| My hairdresser said not to overclean your scalp, that acutally helps the lice live; in fact, greasy hair will help kill them. She said she just puts a styling gel in her son's hair to make his hair stickier & less attractive to lice. |

| You can put straight white vinegar on the kids head and then a shower cap for 30 minutes then come out all live lice and nits with a metal comb for that purpose (sold at the pharmacy). The vinegar helps loosen the glue holdning the nit to the strand. Wash all bedding, coats with hottest water possible. Vacuum everything! Repeat the metal comb use - without the vinegar ever five days for a month. It is lots of work, but better than chemicals! Hope yall stay lice free! |

It was mayonnaise that they used for the lice. I guess it suffocates them or something but it took a few times of doing it before they were all gone.

I found this online once posted by a school nurse. Prepare a mixture of tee tree oil (smothers them), vinegar (releases their eggs hold on the hair shaft) and dawn detergent (cuts the tee tree oil out of your hair).
I love my little nephew and his sisters, but the darlings often come home with head lice. They have given it to me once already, so I use this now as a preventative when they have been over and hugged and hung all over me.
Use once a week if not infected (but been near someone who is) everyday if infected till all bugs and nits are gone.
I'll come back and edit to add the exact measurements, I need to look that up.

Head Lice Shampoo
Small Amount
2 tablespoons Tea Tree Oil
6 ounces Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (Dawn ONLY)
2 ounces white vinegar
Medium Amount
2 ounces Tea Tree Oil
12.5 ounces Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (Dawn ONLY)
4 ounces white vinegar
Large Amount
4 ounces Tea Tree Oil
25 ounces Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (Dawn ONLY)
8 ounces white vinegar
Mix the three ingredients in a large squeeze bottle, such as
an empty dish soap bottle. Use as regular shampoo, leave
on for about 5 minutes before rinsing. Use conditioner to
soften hair and keep dandruff down. Tea Tree Oil may
cause some dandruff, but the bugs will be gone. May use
every day, and bugs are usually gone within a week. Be
VERY CAREFULL not to get in eyes or mouth.

I have heard from several people that if the school says lice is going around you can help prevent them on yourself or kids by buying the Coconut Suave shampoo and mixing just a few drops of tea tree oil into the bottle. Just shampoo with this everyday. It really is supposed to work and can't hurt to try! Good Luck!

After my daughter had a bought of headlice, I did some research. The best advice I heard was, upon hearing about an outbreak in the school, to get a nit comb and come through your childs hair (after spraying with a vinegar) every night after shampooing to get out any eggs or lice that might be there BEFORE it becomes a problem. This is a little time consuming, but really does keep you from having to pesticides in your childs hair. I am going to start using Caron's head lice shampoo recipe too.
