I just saw on the news where New Jersey is requiring children in preschool and kindergarten to get the flu shot. They were showing babies getting the shot, too. If they don't get it they can't go to school.
So I was wondering if anyone besides me hates this. They said other states are thinking of doing this, too.
How much should the government be involved in our children and grandchildren's lives? How much of a voice do we as parents and grandparents have anymore?
I know if you homeschool you do not have to get the kids immunized. I have several friends who's kids have not been. But how long will that last before someone comes knocking on your door telling you to get your kids shots or else?
I will not get a flu shot myself. I am not going to tell someone not to. It should be a choice for you to make, not the government. I do not want to be their guinea pig or my grandkids, either.
This is too much like the NAIS for animals. I will not do that, either. It's not mandatory here yet, but probably will be soon.

We don't do flu shots here. My doctor always recomends them and we always don't get them.
I bet you could get a waiver for the flu shots if they were requrired in your school, although if the flu were going around and your child was not vaccinated they would maybe make them stay home for awhile.
I am glad our state dosn't have this rule.

Here you get the flueshots fro free if you are 65 and over, or ill and might have nasty side-effects from the flue OR if you are weak .
All the others have to pay for it. My mom got her flue shot every year since she was far over 65.
I never had one, I am not in any of the risk groups. I don't want one either.
IF I had a little baby I would not have my child given the flue shot. Why? Because kids "need" to be sick once in a while to build up their immune system IMO!
I think if you give shots for every illness under the moon and then some, they just don't experience what it is to be ill and might get other illnesses later in life.
Like I said, I don't have children, but these are just my thoughts about this :)

The government has no right to tell us what vaccinations are required for our children, but think about it. When you put your children in the state schools, they are the governments kids. The people of our nation have handed our kids over to the government and so the government was more than happy to take over...just more control. It doesn't take a village, it takes a mommy and daddy to raise a child; but sadly, we no longer have that right.
You are right, it won't be long until they will be knocking on OUR doors, the ones who have tried their hardest to stay off of the grid. Then we have to decide when we will give in, how far to fight, where to draw the line. I think anybody out there who agrees with us on these issues face hard times and I think we are also aware of it. Fight the good fight....remain strong. If we keep giving away our rights its only a matter of time we will be living like Russia, N Korea and other government run, socialist and communist contries. |

The thing is I'm a diabetic, they said I HAD to get it cause I am diabetic. Every single time I've gotten it I've gotten the flu, that last for 6 months and turns to pneumonia! When I stopped taking it, I haven't ever been sick for 6 months straight again! At most it last a week then I'm fine again.
Any way, we don't get all shots around here (me, my husband or daughter). They try those "scare" tactics, with me too, she won't get in school with out it, blah blah blah. Well I am here to tell you that's hooey! Every state has special papers you can sign-siting religious reasons primarily, that you refuse them, and they will allow your children in school!

My husband drives a truck, is diabetic (not the insulin type, just pills) and has not had the flu shot. I don't think his co. requires it yet. But he will not get one, either.
I agree it does make you sick when you get the shot. I do not trust most doctors anyway. I have not been sick in years. Why should I ruin it by getting a shot that will make me sick? I agree with Dutchy, too, I think kids should get some sickness. Otherwise their bodies won't be able to fight back.
I also will not take antibiotics, either. The few times I have taken them, I've gotten nasty yeast infections. So I think I'd much rather be sick.
If I knew what I know now years ago, my youngest daughter would never had taken so many antibiotics for ear infections. She sill has problems with her ears today.
Heather, who is "they"? Your doctors? Or work? And is it just because you are diabetic? |

Hubby has to get one (military), Charlie requires one for daycare and mine is optional, working in a hospital setting. I decline mine because each time I get one, I get SICK SICK SICK, worse than any flu symptoms. I think I have a really bad reaction to it, almost like I am allergic. It is always tough because Charlie's last daycare had a big brew ha ha over this. One lady refused to have her child vaccinated but THEN brings the kid to school with the flu because she has too work...so what do you do then? This is a major reason most schools require it. The kid ended up getting the other kids really sick. It is such a hard place to be to choose and the after affect.

We don't get the flu shots either. It is a "shot in the dark" so to speak since the drug companies have to guess which flu strain will be the worst that year and sometimes they miss the mark. Last year the most prevelant strain was not the one the flu shot guarded agaisnt. I know many people who have gotten the flu after getting the shot (not from the shot, but the shot didn't work) and many who didn't get the shot and didn't get the flu. Honestly I think it is all about making money and I don't see the vaccine working that well. Not to count that we are injecting who knows what into our bodies every year. I have never had the flu shot and haven't had the flu for 15+ years (knock on wood). My kids haven't ever had the flu either. Actually, my kids are some of the healthiest I have known and they haven't been vaccinated agaisnt anything yet. Never had an ear infection or strep and never had antibiotics (except when my son cut his head and needed them to ward off infection). They are 5, 3 and 5 months.

The doctors are the "they". And pretty much more diabetic educators and the like.
I'm a type one. But, I think insulin is better then pills for type 2 as well. I'm not saying your husband is doing anything wrong, don't take me wrong at all. I'm just saying make sure you read up on the pills, all the pills for type 2 have a side effect of heart disease. Just something to think about. (read all that stuff that comes with the pills). At least last time I did research on them for my grandma that was a side effect. But, it also depends on what he is taking the pills for I believe. If it's for his pancreas to produce more insulin, or if it's to make the gates open on the insulin so they will stick to the glucose (called insulin resistance).

They offered Nora the flu shot when I had to take her to the clinic for an ear infection. I don't think Nora needs the flu shot. We declined and I won't get one, more because I am afraid of needles than any other reason.

The drug companies are like Chicken little. They ALWAYS say the "SKY IS FALLING"-- and we are all going to DIE from this disease or that if you don't take THEIR drugs!! Funny, but man has survived for CENTURIES without drugs and medications of any kind (other than what God put on this earth to heal our ills), so why is today any different? One thing DOES make it different though -- $$$$. Who really benefits from taking the drugs? Not us!!! Hmm.....
I have worked on/off in the medical field for over 14yrs now (and GAVE all those shots!) and I've never had one. I won't ever GET one either! Honestly, I'd rather have the flu!!! Working in a private doctors office it is usually required for ALL employees to be vaccinated against this or that. (Including Hep A & B which I've ALSO refused) I've always signed the waivers. Whenever I'd get an argument from the "higher ups" I'd tell them I was allergic to medications (which I really AM) and if they forced me to get the flu shot and I got sick and ended up in the hospital and/or died from it, THEY'D be responsible for paying my expenses-- boy, they couldn't hand that paper over fast ENOUGH!!
Besides, the CDC and the drug companies can only GUESS which strains will be the most troublesome from year to year anyway, (usually four types), and it seems they are always WRONG! It's also not uncommon for people to complain of "flu-like" symptoms a few days after getting the flu shot. Yet ANOTHER reason I'd rather not get it. If I'm GOING to get the flu, that's one thing, but if I get a shot to PREVENT it and STILL end up with it? No thanks. I'll pass. I was taught by an old school doctor that anyone with a healthy immune system, no matter their age, shouldn't worry about it. A healthy immune system is more effective against illness and disease than any drug can ever HOPE to be.
I'm like Elizabeth. I never ran my kids to the doctor unless they had a fever more than two days (and up to 104*). Rarely did they get medication for anything, though no parent likes to see their child suffer-- it's all those childhood illnesses that STRENGTHEN the immune system if allowed to run it's miserable course! There are exceptions, of course, but a good parent KNOWS when their child needs medical treatment. It's all common sense. So I have to say this-- parents : Let you babies eat dirt and play with dogs and cats! You'll have some of the healthiest kids on the planet! I know I do!!! (LOL!!!)

I know diabetes is a whole new can of worms here. He has had diabetes for several years now. He finally has a diabetic doctor and nutritionist he goes to every 6 months or so to monitor him. They put him on the Byeta about 1 1/2 years ago. He got sick from it but they said that would go away. It did a little. but now he doesn't take it but once a day and only 5mg instead of 10. He's been hearing a lot of bad things about it lately and is going to tell his doctor he wants to stop taking it. I told him to make sure they know so they'll be aware if something changes. But he has not felt good since he's taken it.
Good for you, Alee. You know your child more than they do, anyway, right?
Elizabeth, my friends that homeschool, all their kids are so healthy and they are around other kids all the time at church and the school co-op, too. They're never sick. Of course they eat good healthy food, too. And good vitamins don't hurt, either.
And how does anyone know what kind of flu strain will be worse this year anyway? |

Amen, Tracy! That's another reason kids are so sick today is all the darn antibacterial junk that's out now. Parents are asked to bring that stuff to school too. We never did when my kids were little. They're killing all the good bacteria. These kids in schools don't stand a chance anymore.
That reminds me of when my first granddaughter went to kindergarten. She'd never been to daycare or preschool before that. She was in school only a month when she got so sick. She couldn't keep anything down for days. I kept her during this time. Took her to 3 different doctors. The 3rd one put her in the hospital. She had gastrointestinal disorders and mono. She was just 5 years old and had mono. She was in the hosp. 4 days. She's 9 now and a very healthy kid. |

I know Kristin, and they also ask for "bleach" wipes! We didn't have anything like that when I was in school. Our teachers used regular powdered soap, and those old brown paper towels! What was wrong with those?

I get one. I am diabetic-type 2. I am on Metformin.
This is my second year in a row, getting a flu shot. If I get sick again after my shot, I am not doing it next year.
I had one years ago, and I was sick all the time that year.
I had my kids get one last year because we lost two kids in the Twin Cities to flu within a few days of each other. I have already buried a child, and don't intend to bury another one if I can help it.
My kids are immunized as well.
I recall seeing my brother get chicken pox when he was 17. He felt lousy, and said he wanted to die. (He has the flair for the melodramatic sometimes) and my Mother said it hit him much harder than it did when I had them years earlier. The older you are when you get those the more dangerous they are.
However, both of my kids are pretty healthy because we eat healthy, and wash hands a lot.
As for the wipes, we had to bring some this year too-I wonder what they do with the surplus of wipes, hand sanitizer and kleenx at the end of the year. They sure as heck don't come back home, but they will send a thousand emails if you forget to bring them in for the class.
Oh and I agree with letting your kids get dirty!
I had a now former friend who was constantly washing her kids, (She washed them so much, I am surprised they didn't shrink! )
and she wouldn't let them play and get dirty. Her kids were constantly sick and LOVED coming to my house to play. I'd let them get dirty and eat cookies and all the "bad things" she wouldn't let them do.
Sadly, both kids now have some psychological issues-neurotic/OCD. Her third one is a pistol and gives her a run for her money!

What's up with all the anti-bacterial stuff? My best friends parents, who are in their early 70's, are OBSESSED with anti-bacterial wipes. They wipe down their toilest everyday with those wipes, and the kitchen counters are sprayed with bleach everytime they are used--and it's just the two of them in the house! Consequently, everytime they go away from home, they get sick--every time!

We dont do flu shots here either. Neither of my children get them. It seems like every time my grandparents get theirs it will only a matter of weeks before they both are down with the flu. I just can see putting it in and hoping it will be fought off.
