I have two goats, Rufas and Becky. They love to eat my cherry tree leaves, they can get the suckers as the tree itself has branches too tall for them to get to. They also love my crab apple tree leaves and apples. I just read on another post that crab apples are toxic, I've never heard this beofre, but I was was at the vet the other day and they have a poster up and it mentioned that cherry trees can cause cyanide posioning. As Rufas and Becy have been eating off the trees for a few motnhs now b4 I knew any of this, I wonder if its correct? Is there anyone out there who knows for sure? Maybe its a variety thing or for certain pets, etc...One thing I do know, they go to the milkweed and the tomaot plants to take a small bit and they either spit them out or smell and dont take a bit at all, both plants i know for a fact are poisonious to animals.

I eat crab apple jelly and spiced crab apples all the time...I doubt that they are poisonous. But the dried or drying leaves of Prunus variety plants are not good for live stock. I don't know about how crab apples are for goats. Some fruits with pits have cyanide in the kernal of the pit. I am really just going by what I've read, so no hard facts. Do you have a small ruminants specialist in the area? maybe call up to WSU vet school, they may have better info for you.

If it hasn't affected them by now, it might not be a problem.
We don't feed our browsing antelope cherry either.
ALTHOUGH, I thought the leaves were ok fresh, as in as the anmals plucks them off the branch, but toxic if they sit from a trimmed branch and wilt |
